Marvelous teaching technique. At age 71 the fingers don't work as well as they used to, but I'm getting there. Taken about 10 1 hr sessions to feel comfortable with Lesson 1, but I don't mind. Slow and steady wins the day and I don't have any illusions about entering the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Thank you for your time and talent.

Hey Roger, great to hear from you and you are so correct, slow and steady wins for sure. If you just do a little each day, you will start to have your hands automatically remembering (called muscle memory).. so that is something to look forward to. Appreciate you being here and your dedication!!! bob!

As you progress in this Fingerpicking For Beginners series (there's 12 total and more one on the way soon) you will see that I'm going very slow with it all. I'd like to think that what's different about this course is, rather than showing you what to play, I'm showing "how to play." This has worked for my beginner students over the years so I'm sure it's gonna work for you as well. Thanks again Peter, and don't hesitate if you have a question... I'm here to help! Cheers!! bob

Adding to Roger Allen's comment 6 years ago, which now makes him 77 and I am starting this at 77, and so, yes, Roger, at this age for us seniors it does take a lot of extra effort to get our fingers right and in between the strings and fretting it just below the fret! But we have a good instructor in Bob Harris. THANK YOU BOB

Hi again Shiraz Khalfan. Thank you for another great comment and you are right... the fingers don't move as well for us older people. But doing repetitions over time will help get you used to playing. I recommending to go slow throughout the lessons and not to move ahead until you can really play a each small part. I don't know if this is the first lesson you've seen of mine, but this is a part of a whole series of 13 videos. @bobharris1497

Louis P. Funny you should mention calluses., right now my index finger is sore from playing too much. At my studio I have to switch off playing different instruments- today I was on the mandolin for about 5 hours. (requires a little different kind of callus than guitar and I don't play the mando as much as guitar). The bass is even worse! I think 8-10 minutes is great and what I recommend as opposed to 2 hours on the weekend... it just won't sink in as well as a little every day (which I'm very happy that you are doing!). Thanks again and keep me posted with your progress.!

Hey Diggsblues, glad you are doing this course. In hindsight which might help, the first note of any measure typically starts with the "lowest root bass note" of the chord we are playing. So for an A chord (any type), it would be the A bass note, string 5 open.. For an Em chord, it would be the open E note 6th string.. D would be the D note, 4th string open, and so on and so forth. Happy pickin' and thanks again!! bob

@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Hi Bob, both injuries are on my chord hand and because I lost part of my knuckle (the width of a saw blade) i find that c and f are difficult,it's been a dozen years now but wanted to try again ,I was learning and have been playing off and on since 83 but off and on than really off ,thank you Bob
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons 2 ай бұрын
@@truthforu1 I was guessing it was the left hand. So many people complain about those two chords anyway so, it's not just you. With the F chord there's some work arounds and with the C as well. The cool thing about fingerpicking is we can omit notes and pick only the ones that sound good whereas with strumming, you have to play the full chords. If you can go thought this whole series here, I will bet you can do this.. It would open up a new world of guitar.. I'm wishing you the best... keep me posted..

Sorry for the delay as your message ended up in my spam folder, not sure why? Anyway, I will first say that it's a lot of work without guarantee of getting paid for it all, but one way you can make it work is by getting good keyword research done before you even make a video. This way you'll know what people are searching for and base your video around that. The basic idea is to find and use a keyword phrase that doesn't have a lot of competition so you will rank higher for it. For one year the title of this video was something like "Beginner Guitar Lesson" and no one watched. But then I did some keyword research and found "Fingerpicking For Beginners" , changed the title and the thumbnail, and then it took off. I think I spent more time on the research than I did on making the videos here. My e mail is acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com if you want to continue the conversation. I think you theme is worth pursuing!! Thanks and have a great day! bob

Really nice teaching. I think it might be a good idea to mention somewhere that you are assuming standard tuning. Some beginners will have no idea that chords are formed with certain notes and that which notes your fingers play in a certain position is going to depend on the tuning you start with.
@bobharris1497
@bobharris1497 9 жыл бұрын
Hi +Dee Broughton , great to have you here! (BTW, just sent you the follow up course). I think I have to make up a tuning video as you bring up a great point. And to take what you said even further, a lot of rank beginners don't even know what standard tuning is. Handing a digital tuner to a beginner (I've tried) doesn't necessarily mean the guitar is getting in tune either. So thanks for this Dee, appreciate you bringing this up!!! bob

@bobharris1497
@bobharris1497 9 жыл бұрын
Hi +bullet , great to have you here and glad to hear that you are thinking about buying a guitar- that is great news. My best advice to you is this... It's best to buy a guitar from a music shop rather than from the internet, as there are great variations- even with the exact same model.. Best to go to the music store with someone that plays- they can help you pick out a good guitar and notice important details that someone who doesn't play won't be able to. If you don't have someone, most of the time the music store will have a guitarist that knows their stuff and can help you pick out an easy playing guitar with "light gauge strings and low action." (Music store rep will know what this means). There's nothing more frustrating than coming home with a new guitar and then trying to play, only to find out that your guitar is difficult to play.. Anyway, I 'm here if you need more help... best to you and to your family and good luck with this!

@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons 3 жыл бұрын
Hey AdoxHydra _ , thank you for taking the lessons here - this is a great question and I hope my answer is okay. So the #1 reason why my guitar sounds different is simply because I'm playing it. I know that might sound crazy, but you could take the exact composition and same guitar and hand it to other players and, each will sound different! This is due to the amount of pressure I'm using that is unique to me- bone density, how much callouses I have on my picking hand, the angle that my fingers are attacking the strings, the timing and groove I have that is unique to me, and more. #2 would be the guitar itself, as I have a Taylor Grand Auditorium with a cedar wood top that has a certain tone to it (a twang as you call it). I could play the same thing on one of my Martin guitar, and it will totally sound different. With recording, it gets even more complicated as mic positioning is critical, along with the mic pre that I use, along with the media I'm recording to. Many great fingerstyle players choose to grow their fingernails longer to use them as picks rather than the skin. The tone is better in my opinion, but I had problems with my fingernails and was getting a scratchy sound. I later discovered the thumbpick, which increased the volume of the guitar and also brought out a lot more tone. Somehow just that one pick made all the difference in the world. With that said, there's still compositions that I would prefer a warmer tone (with just the fingers)- but it's nice to have a choice. I think what always blows my mind is the difference of tone a guitar will have from day to day. I will record something here one day, leave the mics set up exactly the same, only to find that my new repairs and tone don't match the day before.. Many times my excuse will be "The moon wasn't in the 7th House) Good tone is always the constant struggle, and after 55+ years, you would think that I would have it down by now..:) A very famous bluegrass guitarist named Tony Rice once told me "It's all in the hands". With that said, it sounds to me like you are on the same path that we all are. But as you keep getting better at the guitar and concentrate on the timing and groove (we go over this all big time here once you know the basics) you will find a huge improvement of satisfaction with your playing that's not possible without good groove. Please keep me posted and of course I am here to help!! Hope this answered your question! bob

Hi +Bhallamoodi Ravithej - great to have you here and welcome! Yes, practice... and just a little each day rather than just once or twice a week. And it can only be 10 or 15 minutes. Good luck, and do keep me posted as to your progress, and thanks again! bob

Thank you for the lessons, they are the best. I'm on lesson 4 and quite slow in catching the picking hand on all the lessons, I'm sorry. I really have to play it over and over again. is there somewhere I can go to get graphs of all the lessons

Hi Zelda, great going on making it this far and I'm considering doing more lessons with charts and inserting it into this series. There is a free follow up course after lesson 12 that has all the charts and everything and if you e mail me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com, I can send it to you (just indicate you want the follow up and I'll know which course to send you). Don't be sorry about going slow because that's exactly what I hope that you will do. It's reps, over and over that transfer your brain power to the hands (called muscle memory). I'll look for your e mail and thanks Zelda, you are doing perfect!! bob

Hi ribass, that's a Taylor Grand Auditorium- they only made 300 of them but I do like some of the new guitars they are making with the torrified wood and the slanted braces. Glad you are taking the lessons here and wishing you a great weekend. bob
