If you are just starting out on the guitar and like fingerstyle guitar, you should take this course. Comes complete with a step by step study guide and encouragement. Ask my students, I don't assume anything nor leave anything out. Once you get the hang of the right hand (which for most people is the "coordinated hand,") the easy 1 fingered chords on the left hand will be a welcome relief to learning the standard chords which can take months for a lot of beginners. The goal here is to get you playing guitar as quickly as possible, and not looking at your guitar leaning against a wall in your house or wishing you can play. Let's do this right now!!! Let me know how I'm doing (and you too) by commenting below! bob

I'm in my 60s, and I've tried learning to play guitar on a few occasions in the past decades (I used to play piano). No luck! However, I've just tried your first lesson, and it's going great! That fact that you go so slow and repeat things--and that you don't try to teach chords right off the bat--are making a big difference for me. Also, I've always had problems with placing my fingers on the frets--I usually got a muted sound or touched two strings instead of one. But with your instruction on how to hold the thumb and the finger on the fret, I'm getting the correct sound for once. I'm excited to learn more. Thanks so much for your great lessons and patience.

Hey Googley Eyed (love that name!) Thanks for taking the lessons and I'm very happy to hear that they helped. I had a feeling that something like this song would be a great "Gateway" to playing guitar.. and don't worry, one step at a time,, the chords will come. When you get finished with this, please comment, either on this video or another and I'll send you to more songs (2 fingered chords!)... Thanks again and happy pickin' ! bob

@@Luvurselffirst Hi Mira, yes, from one vid to the next you'll get a lot of variations with how much is included in the teaching. String numbers are important because it's the main reference to what strings we are plucking. Some people will call out the notes instead of the strings (E,B, G, D, A, E) but that's not a good method since there's more than just one way to tune a guitar and, if you use a capo.. what then? Today is Day 1 for me…got my first 🎸when I was 13. Strings hurt my fingers so I put it down. I’ve always loved guitar and have bought a few through the years but never formal training. I did the DVD lessons w/ Esteban, who went too fast, tried many KZbin teachers, hired & fired a few online, took & never finished Lauren Bateman’s course which is actually really good but I got distracted and never fully committed. Now, I’m in a Fender online course which I really don’t like because again…they go too fast. Today, your video pops up in my feed and I have ALWAYS wanted to learn fingerpicking. I absolutely LOVE how you s-l-o-w things down and repetitive. Playing guitar has always been my dream and I refuse to buy another one until I learn how to play the “4” I have. Yeah…I know but I think they are beautiful instruments so I buy them.😊 Today, I think I’ve finally found a teacher who can keep my interest. I gotta fight through the pain of re-callusing my fingers but its worth it. Thanks for taking the time out to make these videos and please “pray” I stay consistent. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I'll be 70 years old soon. I started playing the guitar 46 years ago hilly billy style strumming. Self taught and with help from friends learning some chords from them. I can't afford to attend guitar classes those days and there wasn't internet available. I stopped playing for about 31 years ago and now I wish to pick it up again but learning the fingerpicking style. Today whilst serving the internet I found your site which was quite interesting and without any hesitation I am now subscribing. I would like to learn it as fast as I can. Hey Kerri,, sounds like you got the drill down! Basically these videos speed by (can't make a 2 hour video here on KZbin and put the audience to sleep). So I do recommend going back over it all and taking one section at a time and doing a lot of reps. Since this fingerpicking is like juggling, it does take some time to get the coordination down. The goal here is to not use your brain so much and get your hands to remember how to automatically do it (muscle memory). But like I said, it sounds like you know the drill!! Let me know if you need any help as well... (but you are doing fantastic!).... happy pickin' !!! YEAH!!!!

Bob Harris is the best guitar teacher for me. I don’t know music, never played a guitar and in my 50s. Somehow Bob has an easy way to explain in detail how to best play a guitar. Normally I get frustrated easily if I don’t hear results quickly but somehow with his beginners lessons I just got hooked to keep and keep practicing maybe because my guitar sounded good from his first lesson, that was encouraging and exciting. I am on my first weeks learning guitar with Bob and I am looking forward to continue for years to come. Thank you Bob!

Hey Bob! Well, it's going to take this 69-year-old beginner a lot longer than 60 minutes to learn to play this first song well, but on the plus side, I have a lot more time than I have either brains or money so I'll get it, eventually. I also have a whole lot of patience. LOL Thank you very much for the lessons. I figure if I can learn to play just 10 songs fingerstyle and with a little bit of "gab" I can entertain a few older folks for about an hour and that about the length of our attention span until we need to take a nap.

Hey Michael! Thank you for writing here, and it's great to know you! This is the home of maybe too slow lessons and you came to the right place, both brain-wise, financial or otherwise. .. ha ha.. but the patience part is the virtue. .. Have a good feeling that you will do very well. My best advice is to go slow, and don't rush through the lesson. Stay on 1 part...don't be afraid to stay on one small part- get it to sound like something, and then you can pass and go to the next part. The thing I love about videos and this platform is, you can watch it anytime- review things, study it at your own pace. You can do anything you want if you are determined. Hi, Thanks for your lessons. I learned several finger patterns about 40 years ago from my aunt along with basic cords. I had developed rheumatoid arthritis several years ago and had to stop playing. I saw your videos and have been starting to play again. It has helped my hands playing again. My past learned patterns have quickly come back along with starting to practice with your videos. I had tried several other sites but yours is the easiest for me to follow. Thank you. My biggest problem is cords. But I enjoy music and will continue. Played trumpet and tuba from grade school thru high school in the band. I am now 68 years old. Again….thank you

Hi Rick, I'm sorry to hear about the arthritis but I'm glad you are playing through it. The guitar definitely helps. I go through spells of not playing and my hands definitely start to develop all the aches and pains- probably arthritis, but the playing keeps it in check. The fingerpicking is great because it makes it possible to not have to play the full chords. One step at a time here just like exercising- as we will get into the full chords slowly in other courses. Wishing you a great 2021 and if you need any help, please let me know! bob

Hi Sheila, thank you for letting me know that your nails and hair are okay (was about to recommend 'biotin" ha ha.. Hey Alan, yea, you got it with going slow is actually faster. Simply because you are giving your fingers a chance to catch up to your brain. Yes I do...but I really want to learn nice plucking or fingerpicking guitar play. Thank you so much for the reply. I really appreciate this lesson from you. :). God bless you Bob.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dyan, get this pattern down first and play it steady. The real trick to fingerstyle guitar is getting in a groove with it, to make simple things sound nice. If you already know other chords, the first note you play with this pattern in each measure is the root note of the chord. So a G chord is a G note, 3 frets up on the 6th string..An A chord is open 5th string, D chord is open 4th string, C chord 3 frets up 5th stringC note). etc., The cool thing about this style is, the pattern doesn't change, just the strings we pluck. Hope this helps and God Bless you too Dyan!!

great lesson. thank you. while finger picking, i keep the pinky finger of my right hand ( which is my picking hand) on the guitar body, as a support. is it okay, or should i get rid of that habit??
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons8 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarath, great question.. I slightly rest on the top of the guitar, but many instructors will say it's not a good idea. Two reasons I can think of... 1. it might dampen the sound of the guitar if you press too hard and 2., if you want to use the pinky for classical and some other music forms..... (which by the way, very few guitarists do such a thing). One of my favorite fingerpicking guitarist is Chet Atkins and he rested his pinky on the top of the guitar. If you are just starting out, my recommendation is to try without (unless it's just so uncomfortable). James Taylor who is another big favorite of mine does not rest his fingers on top of the guitar, and I think he uses his pinky to play some notes. Hope this help! bob

Bob... the pace and patience of your method is right on. I am a true novice to the guitar but absolutely love your way of teaching. I turned 81 last Sept 9. and am loving every single moment . Thanks you for your attitude and the selections you have chosen to begin with. Unfortunately, I have short stubby fingers and will not likely be able to play many of the chords. However, I can play all the notes at once at any given fret often with two fingers. Would really appreciate any shortcuts or chord variations. Hello Bob. I've been using a pick for several years, but I would like to be able to fingerpick too. I watched this video with you showing how to fingerpick. Is this the pattern that you use on ALL of the songs that you play? Thanks from Tom in 🇨🇱 Texas 🇨🇱👋🤠
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Жыл бұрын
Hey Tom, great to hear from you and thanks for taking the lessons. Quick answer is no, but the picking pattern here is called Travis Picking and the one I most often use. Anytime you see (or hear) the thumb alternating on the bass strings and playing on the downbeats, it's basically the Travis Style Picking. This however doesn't mean that we can't add or take away notes in the pattern (and I do a lot of variations on the lessons here) ... it's still Travis.. As a quick example, 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & T T I T M T 5 4 5 4 (not showing the other strings (just thumb) 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & T T I T M T I 5 4 5 4 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & T I T I T M T I 5 4 5 4 (thumb plays on dowbeats (1 2 3 4 ) you can see the other fingers are playing on more beats than example 1. Wishing you well Tom and thanks for the great question. .hope I explained it okay. happy pickin' !! bob

I only have one thing to say. Where can I buy new fingers?
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons4 жыл бұрын
Hi Iconic_Flower Girl, how many times I thought the same thing. With a serious injury back in 1990 to my left hand, I didn't think I would ever be able to move my ring and pinky fingers again. I did a lot of healthy things instead of surgery (glad I didn't go that route). They move now, not as well, but playing guitar helps. Your coordination will come if you can do a little bit every day- just small amounts. The key is not to get ahead of yourself and feel the reward with small progress. Over time you will be able to do things on the guitar that were not possible today- those are the milestones that I and everyone else that plays look forward to. Wishing you the best and hope you keep going... bob!

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons thanks! I'm really inspired to play guitar. Btw, is fingerstyle an easy method of playing guitar compared to the other methods?
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons4 жыл бұрын
@@cat90yearsago58 It's easier on the left hand because mostly you don't have to play the full chords like you would need to for strumming. The right hand (which is usually the coordinated hand for most) is more difficult than strumming but very do-able if you learn in steps and go slow. Happy guitar day and if you need help, just let me know! bob

Thank you very much, I tried a couple of other tutorials but your tutorial was the easiest, the only issue for me was to play it with the pick instead of the fingers...once again thank you for the commendable gesture from you as your tutorial takes more time to record which means you understood the problem of the beginners well. Thank you.

Hi Rarn, thank you for the kind words . It sounds like you are doing very well with this and glad to help! Yes, the videos are not so easy to make- back then I was doing it all on an iPad which didn't help things. Wishing you continued happy pickin' and thanks again!! bob

Tried three times to download lessons as you offer, but nothing comes to my email address. When I try again (and again) I'm told I have exceeded my attempts! Never tried finger style and basically have given up trying to learn guitar on MANY occasions! This time, I thought I'd found someone who teaches at a level my wee brain can comprehend and I can't download the lessons. Believe it or not, I can't keep up with the KZbin video as I'm just too slow at my coordination, so I NEED something I can read VERY slowly!

After having to stop lessons 22 years ago due to lack of finances and becoming a single parent, here I am ready to try again, now the children have left home and I have time for me once more. Have sat watching your videos and feel confident with how you explain and the pace, that i shall soon be back to where i left off in 1994. Thank you.

@@healerondemand3464 When you are ready, I recommend to go to a guitar store rather than buy site unseen- try a bunch out in your price range. I've found some excellent guitars that didn't have a name brand that I either bought for students or kept myself. If you have to buy sight unseen however, your best bet is a Yamaha guitar. Very consistent, good price and never saw a bad one. But it sounds like you are getting good mileage out of the one you have.

Yes bob! Thanks for this. Tried so many tutorials and they just frustrated me. Talked to much crap. I found lessons were all about them liking the sound of their own voice than actually getting down to teaching guitar. Your 1st lesson was brilliant. Going to keep practising that for a day then 2nd lesson tomorrow. Really happy and excited about it! Thanks bob. :)

There are actually decent acoustic guitars on ebay for 45 dollars. Also on Amazon as well between $60 -$120 and up. I picked up a Yamaha for $120.00 and a good chinese acoustic that normally sold for $120 for only $15 bucks 🤩😁 (need to sand sound the frets though but still good. Just look up how to on KZbin). P.S. There is a guy here on KZbin. Guitar max I, think. He is muscular, early 30's and has long black hair. He does reviews on cheap but good guitars. That 45 dollar guitar is in there. Good luck 🎸😁!
