Great repair first of all...just something I was thinking was would it not be easier to add some aniline dye ( cherry) to the raw wood before the fill and finish? Only saying this as it would then only take one coat of the tinted shellac...

It gets too dark too fast by adding stain to raw wood. No do overs that way either. I can wipe this shellac off in a few seconds and have multiple do overs 🎉
