Thanks for making this video. I made the mistake choosing big stretch around my tape on my last job site. I really wanted to try high end caulking but now I know better. My lower packing on a new machine started giving out, took a month of tinkering to finally figure out and address it. Finally feel confident to get back out in the wild and spray. It took a lot out of me, I’m still waking up at night with dreams of bad spray patterns 😂

I love that you're adding painting to your skill set (or have for 10 years now).... As a handyman who does a lot of everything, I am the one who does the carpentry (or drywall work) and then painting. So you can bet I've improved as a carpenter knowing I have to finish my own work off. I set up my painting for success by good practices in the carpentry trade (nail depths, number of nails, etc), and there's no one to blame except myself if somethings off in my prior operations. Love your channel, my friend.... You are an excellent carpenter who I have learned a lot from!

Hey brother. You really gotta try an italian primer (like Renner or centurion) with a Command (from Benjamin Moore) topcoat. We have switched from Scuff X to Command for all of our millworks. The only time we won't use Command is when it's for cabinets- then we use a Renner top coat. Command dries flatter, harder, and faster than Scuff X... It's the best local topcoat you can buy for woodwork. Trust me. I've tested them all lol. Also, the TriTech guns and tips can get all the way down to a 306 with a double orifice. It will take your flatness and dry time to the next level.
@doug.ritson Жыл бұрын
Personally I'm a Sherwin Williams guy after a bad start 10 years ago with my local BM dealers, and limit most of my work to 95%+ exterior repaints. I'm always looking to gather information just in case I do an interior project. What is your experience with SW Emerald WBU vs Scuff X vs Command?
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks Жыл бұрын
@@doug.ritson I totally understand that sometimes we choose products not because of the products themselves, but because of who is selling them. If your local Ben Moore is full of dickheads then that makes sense. But that being said, Command is simply on another level to all other local paints. If you ever purchase some Renner, Centurion, Milesi, or other premium Italian coatings you will see how hard the finish dries. It's basically harder than lacquers, but with more flexibility to avoid cracking, and much better water resistance. It's hard to believe how different they are from local paints until you try them. One thing about the Italian coatings is that they must be sprayed with the right equipment or they won't look right... They also have little quirks like "usually only the catalyzed products will cover in 1 or 2 coats", among other things.. The local paints are much more forgiving and easier to use with multiple application methods. But Renner for example has like... 25 variants of the same high quality product- and each variant is for a specific use... So it takes a long time to learn the systems and if you don't use the specifically correct product, then you can get bad results... They told me that I was supposed to use a catalyzed product for refinishes even if I don't need stain blocking. I didn't believe them, so I used their standard primer that I used all the time, and then it reacted poorly with the previous coating... Its like it was permanently degassing and created bubbles in the top coat even after waiting a month for it to fully degas and cure... So the high level Italian coatings all have specific applications and it requires a real seasoned pro to learn their systems and when to use each one. I would never recommend Renner to a hobbyist... But if you use them right, they are on another level. Even their flat finishes are dead smooth and don't pick up dirt... Also, these coatings are figity with what caulkings you can use. Top Gun 250 from BM is an example of a rare local caulking that will work with Italian coatings. Emerald is one of the most forgiving and user friendly paints I've ever used. It doesn't run easily, it packs in the color in one coat, it can lay very flat and look very good... But it's very soft compared to Scuff X, Command, or Italian coatings. I can easily indent my fingernail into Emerald, and if it gets scuffed, then it changes color and you can't get it back to the original. SW Emerald, BM Advance, and KM Durapoxy HP are basically the same products with slight differences between them. One annoying this with Emerald specifically is that their satin sheen picks up dirt like crazy so it's unusable in my opinion. Scuff-X is indeed harder than Emerald, Durapoxy HP, and Advance... That's why it doesn't scuff as easily and so many people are switching to scuff X.... Relatively good hardness, packs in the color, still flexible. Doesn't easily run. It's a good paint! I still keep Scuff X as an option for unusual circumstances. But for the most part, it simply is not as good as Command. Command outperforms Scuff X in almost every area... But my Command does not come in Matte Sheen... Scuff X does. When I need a local paint in matte for finish carpentry (not cabinets) then I go for Scuff X. Command has all the benefits of Scuff X except it dries faster, harder, and flatter. I can make Command look as good as an Italian coating. I can't do that with Scuff X unless I thin it out. Only negative with Command compared to Scuff X or Emerald, is that Command is a little bit more thin than those other paints so you have to be careful about runs... But if you spray even thin coats with a fine finish tip as you are supposed to, then you will get fantastic results. Simply put, Command on finish carpentry, (unless they need matte, then go with Scuff X) and Renner on cabinetry are the only coatings you will ever need as a manual painter. They are the best. They make me the most money and leave the product looking better for longer with less call backs.

@@MaydaysCustomWoodworks Thank you so much for your reply. I am in S-W Florida and Sherwin Williams pretty much owns the market here. All of the local BM stores are owned by the same family. My very first exterior repaint with Aura, BM made me pay homeowner pricing, about $10 more per gallon than my contractor price for SW Duration, which was the best paint they offered at the time. I needed a special tint base they had to order. I asked them to make sure to have extra singles on hand in case I ran low. As I was reaching the end of the project I phoned in to get 2 gallons - they mixed the entire case and tried to force me to take all 4. I compromised and bought 3, but the whole episode soured me. I've been back a few times to see if they would deal on Aura and they claim they cannot. I offered to buy 200 gallons at a pop and store it - same reply. SW works with me and discounts Emerald products, my go-to exterior paints. I plan on winding down my exterior repaints. I just bought a planer/moulder that will allow me to make plantation shutters, which all seem to be painted white. Ours that came with the house are 15 years old and the finish still looks great. I know they were not painted with ProClassic and Emerald didn't exist. My local SW guru is ready to comp me some industrial/commercial paint, but I am not quite ready. He, of course, is not going to tell me about competitors products which is why I appreciate your reply. I am a custom painter and look for the best products and try to use the best practices to apply them. I am an anomaly. Most often I spend hours sanding, and in total an entire day to paint an entry door. My doors have as close to a factor finish as can possibly be done in the field. I use the Titan Capspray 115 HVLP sprayer which usually gives me pretty good results - some colors just don't cooperate was well as others. I am never in want of work and remain booked out at least 12 months. I want to take that same commitment to my woodworking projects. I have used Emerald WBU on some interior doors/trim, but prefer ProClassic on the few interior projects I've done. I can easily set aside my differences with BM locally, eat the upcharge, and try BM Command. Indeed, I am painting a couple interior doors and touching up some trim in the next couple weeks and will try to remember to comment back here afterward. There is no local Renner dealer that I could find. Looks like the closest is in NC. How/where do you purchase yours? Thanks again for your reply, I really appreciate it.
@MaydaysCustomWoodworks Жыл бұрын
No problem at all. I personally do not have a local Renner store either. I get my Renner products shipped to me from Timberlane Finish Solutions in Ohio. I'm in California. I have a closer store in CA called MK Sales, but Harvey at Timberlane always takes the time to explain things to me and I trust him... So I don't mind waiting for their products to get shipped to me. I just need to plan the finishing for a project about a week in advance.

@@MaydaysCustomWoodworks Sub'd your channel and will try to watch this weekend. Also picked up a gallon of Command for an upcoming project. Guy at BM really pushed very hard their INSL-X Cabinet Coat, then tried to get me to buy Advance. He did not recommend Scuff-X for trim and said it is for high traffic walls, but he knows guys use it for trim - he wouldn't though. He really did not want me to buy Command. I asked lots of questions and other than it drying really fast, he couldn't explain why I shouldn't buy it. See what I mean about my local BM dealer? On your recommendation I bought it anyway. I didn't see a way to message you on your channel, but will report back here in a couple weeks how Command paints/works/lays out for me.

I worked for my grandfather for a summer assisting with his general contracting (roofing down to concrete/plumbing). I wish I had paid more attention to his wealth of knowledge. Trying to remodel a lemon house that was band-aided just enough to look presentable, where codes weren't 'required' or followed, and I'm having difficulties everywhere. Nothing was done right, down to the framing. I have bowing all over the house, many walls are more than 1/4 over 8', but I checked the foundation it's level, no cracking. I'm going to have to learn or relearn all aspects, and basically rebuild the home myself. I should have had a third home inspector come in. I didn't realize the whole small-town environment, dudes didn't catch anything.
