Hey artlings! This is my first #sketcbooktour on a sketchbook where I gave myself an anatomy #artchallenge. I tried to strengthen and study my anatomy weak spots in 7 DAYS. I wouldn’t say that this video covers total anatomy for beginners but it does include short tips and tutorials that you may find helpful to get started. If you don’t get anything else from this video its that PLEASE draw ergonomically, and your weaknesses are WORTH strengthening.
This video was created last year, but I only finished editing it now due to some (life changing) circumstances and because of the large learning curve of video editing. But now that I’ve learned certain softwares, I hope to post more in KZbin in the future. So til the next artventure!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE COMMENTS 😭they are my favorite thing to see on SNS I can't believe I'm beyond 5. I'm so happy to hear that other artists are feeling inspired to study anatomy BUT PLEASE do it at a safe rate that doesn't kill your precious arms. (NOTE PSA at 15:40 ) the important part is that you blast beyond your weaknesses which you can do with any type of study. Also, this is my second EVER KZbin video, and I didn't honestly think people would even watch it which is why I only checked now, ( I didn't think to have notifs on KZbin studio since I'm such a smol creator) but I am so pleasantly shocked and happy that it has inspired enough people to even comment. Triple thanks for my first 100 subscribers!🥹 🙏Much Love and Bubble tea to you 🧋🧋🧋

If you had to redo this at a better pace, what do you think would be a better amount of pages per day? 10 pages in 10 days? Or do you think you could still do good with less pages like 5 a day for 10 days in a 50 page sketchbook? I’m interested in doing this but i get strain/ cramps decently easy due to a bad drawing area/setup atm.

im currently studying anatomy and can confirm the arm, with hand, is the hardest part. I recently finished Michael hamptons book and moving on to another japanese anatomy book that is a lot more detailed than other books I found. im doing a very slow, detailed study from skeleton.

I spent about five months on anatomy this year(by copying every page of "Morpho", between 2-3 pages each day), so it's interesting to see this approach. Two things regarding ergonomics: 1. If you did the challenge with a rollerball or fountain pen instead, you'd be able to use a lighter hand. Ink encourages getting the line right the first time, which gradually leads to fast/accurate/confident with less effort. I do nearly all my studies in ink, and switch out the stationary to keep it interesting. My goal is always "make one good attempt, then move on". When I want to grind accuracy I measure a ton and make little prospect marks; when I want to let loose and get through the study quickly I use gestural lines instead. It adds up! 2. Look up "neal adams inking", he shows the way to hold a pen that worked for an entire career. Combine that with an overhand grip for sketching and brushwork(these work best if you set up the page vertically) and you'll be in a much better place for ergonomics, at least at the arm/wrist. For back and neck, I use a folding floor desk, since that lets me shift posture.
@artsytsaa
@artsytsaa Жыл бұрын
Ooo more Ink studies are definitely a great idea! I haven’t thought of using a fountain pen but maybe I’ll try it in another challenge 😃. We definitely don’t have as much ergonomic artist videos as we should out there. Thank you for the useful information, I hope to incorporate it in my future more ergonomic set up.

One quick tip ... Try to make the lines a bit softer , you can just practice lines , or maybe draw boxes with soft lines , I feel like you'll find it amazing how quick your simple sketches will improve by just making the lines softer .

Hey!! Fellow artist here! I wanted to let you know that the way you are holding your pen/pencil is likely making you cramp way more than necessary. I grew up holding my utensils like the exact same way as you are here, and only found out this year that I've been holding it weird. my handwriting was always good, so nobody noticed in school, but apparently teachers are supposed to stop kids from holding it like that if they see it. You really want to hold the pencil in a way where the pad of your thumb is touching the pencil. you don't want to pinch it between the side of your thumb like what i've been doing. I'd recommend looking up "tripod grasp" and switching to that type of pen grip. I just really wish somebody had pointed it out to me sooner because now It takes much longer for me to feel physically strained from drawing, and I also found that I had much more control over the marks I made. Like my mind was kind of blown that I'd been holding it wrong my whole life. I'm not trying to be mean!! I just want to save somebody all the physical strain, especially since you mentioned your arm cramping in the video! If you really don't want to switch you don't have to, but it helped me so much and It's not something you'll realize you're doing unless you have it pointed out to you. it's helped with writing too! I really hope this helps you as much as it did me, good luck on your art journey!
@artsytsaa
@artsytsaa Жыл бұрын
Wow that’s very interesting, I’ve heard of overhand grip but I haven’t studied other types. It also would’ve helped if I didn’t have to film in a flat lay position , but I’ll research this in the future! Thanks for the info 😃

I can't quite express how much this video helped me. I always procrastinate to practice things like anatomy because I look at all those tutorials with muscles and the skull and the name of each bone and get so overwhelmed feeling stupid that I can't seem to figure it out no matter how much I try it just doesn't click. I mean I still have this problem, but seeing someone addressing it in such a natural and direct way was really reassuring for me :) Feet/shoes are my current nemesis
@artsytsaa

Procrastinators unite! 😆 What helped me was to start, was starting with proportions and slowly go through the muscle groups I was interested in. I didn't get to bones until much later, but I hope your journey goes well!

I've drawn on and off for basically as long as I've been able to hold a pencil, but never really dedicated much time to learning actual anatomy until some years ago, where I forgot I was supposed to be doing it for fun and I ended up burning out. I've recently gotten the itch to draw again, this time for fun, and your experiment has inspired me further. This was a blast to watch, I learned a lot, and will do a challenge of my own (just spread over more days, of course, because I'll take your advice). I can also see myself coming back here to get inspiration back when I feel like throwing my sketchbook and myself at the wall, lol. Ps. That last drawing was amazing and gave me a very needed laugh. xD

I'm glad you are taking care of yourself! I don't wanna hear about you getting carpal tunnel, alright? I like stylized stuff (anime) and for me I found that by exercising my brain by working on anything art related, it helped "unlock" the ability to better understand things that aren't related. I started with following a ton of anime eye tutorials and it literally made everything else I drew at the time better. Something else I've been doing these days is watching people make 3d models. Helps me really understand bodies better and why shading "does what it does". If you ever have a bruh moment and can't figure out what angle something goes at (like arms seem to be bent wrong or legs) try to get in the pose you want to put the character in. It helps cause you physically feel what your muscles are doing and the limitations of the directions your bones can bend. Hope this helps someone. Your dedication is great! More than many have. Just glad you won't hurt yourself going forward by continuing in this way 🙏

8:23 YES YES YES! Literally I feel like simplying forms is more important than trying to find where all the details will go. Simplifying gives your brain a shortcut that not only reduces time but makes it easier to learn how to draw form and manipulate it too. Details and accuracy are good and all, but you need to have a strong base first.

I didn't think the arm would become my nemesis as well 😅 but try it out, hopefully the tips in the comments and my own were helpful. 😃As for drawing persistently, I found that challenges work for a procrastinator like me. Even if it isn't something as intense as this challenge, maybe something simple like I'm going to sketch something for 5 mins everyday for a week and see how it goes. Wish you the best! I am working on a style of video that isn't so time consuming, but thank you for the concern!

There’s a book I want to recommend you, but you probably would not be able to get your hands on it, considering it’s by a Chinese artist, but the way that he breaks down the arm just drawing it from reference helps you so much. I would like to send you some pages from the book. Maybe you will find these pages very helpful. Also it also shows the chain method

You should definitely check out this channel called kuzomari .. he has a great video(well videos) , breaking down what you need to understand when it comes to form in perspective, and how that helps you with understanding anatomy

(Too long;didnt read:) how long should a beginner spend to avoid the strain you experienced? Endurance drawing; im curious about how long it took that strain to appear. For someone interested in art, and wanting to spend as much time as possible cranking out the studies of fumdamentals, i admit i never really thought of this. Ive drawn maybe 30 mins in a day (ive spent my years beyond age 17 as a restaraunt line cook, which took 10+ hours a workday and the majority of my energy, but excuses) I now understand i need to work up to higher daily hours. How long would you spend at paper starting out? I appreciate you for the inspiration, and showing the work ethic needed. Thanks for the video, and your time. God bless, and take care.

Tldr: the time is up to you, as long as it’s not causing pain or strain to you. The danger is pushing past the strain to “keep in the zone” This will differ per person, but you can up endurance by being conscious about posture, and can even look up strengthening exercises Honestly, lots of improvement can be done in 30 minutes, esp with targeted studies and a goal to learn even one thing at a time. Assuming you are pursuing some time of semi realism, then I would recommend quality over quantity. A beginner that practices and applies fundamentals (apply meaning making finished works) will improve much faster than say a hobbyist that only draws one thing all the time without reference. The fastest route, I think, is fundamentals + things you like, then targeted studies on your weaknesses. The strain will be “felt” rather than have a time limit that fits all, basically you’ll have to find it 😅(mine, about 2 hrs). My main caution is once you feel strain, do not keep pushing past it strain just bc you’re in the zone/absorbed in your practice, because this is what leads to possibly permanent damage. Sometimes the pain will go the point you find otherwise normal tasks difficult due to the strain (gripping, sweeping, etc), which is when I realized I really needed to stop pushing it. As much as possible practice ergonomic art, esp if you have physical job like that. 🥺 Thanks for your comment! Hope this helps!

How much time did you spend on each day drawing in this challenge?
@artsytsaa
@artsytsaa Жыл бұрын
Too much if I’ll be honest. 😅 It was deep pandemic and I did nothing but draw and chores all day, my sleeping schedule was bad as well. The only time stamp I could find was from 3pm to 3am with chores in between and my last day which was 11pm-3:35am but that was with less pages and no tutorials. Following video tutorials took the most time. So maybe a rough estimate could be 5-8 hours (I certainly hope no more than 8 💀)

@artsytsaa
@artsytsaa Жыл бұрын
Most of the references are from the videos themselves in which I follow along what's on screen. If I found the tutorials weren't getting through my brain or if I wanted extra practiced, I searched on google and Pinterest things like arm anatomy, arm study, how to draw etc... Though for muscles body builders are definitely a good and clear option for reference !

Ummmm.. Are you related to Michael Myers? 😶 Why did you use a ketchin knife to cut the cellophane wrapper on the sketchbook? 😰🤤 In glued sketchbook the glue tends to dry out, crumbles, then the pages fall off.. stitched/ thread bound or spiral bound sketchbooks hold paper better.. no? 😶 Nice video. 🤗
