Finishing a Bowl with CRAYONS?! | Turning Tuesday #8

In this video, I turn a bowl on the lathe and finish it using crayons! This is a technique way back from my experimental finishes series.

I'm just stirring trouble. Thank you all for letting me know the correct pronunciation, it's a common thing to pronounce it the way I do. Especially in the UK. Out of habit and to rustle some jimmies, I'll probably continue to pronounce it the way I do. I much refer one syllable words nowadays...

Well, maybe because I don't speak English, I only speak American..... Always heard it pronounced when gee, with a hard g. You can do the came coloring the pores with ash, or any open grain wood. Used to live wiping oil on ash bowls that had a lot of walnut dust in/on them.

I saw on television a wood turner finishing his product by using crayons> While the finished urn was ready for the application of wax or whatever varnish used for the end product, he had the urn spinning on the lathe, he took a solid crayon to the turning urn applied it and it buffed up, and the result was a color that was awesome in depth. I wish I could remember him he was a kid still in high school and he I think lived in Wisconsin U.S.A.

This is from the Rare Woods USA website; "Panga Panga is the first cousin to Africa’s more popular and well-known exotic, Wenge (with both trees being of the Millettia genus) - sharing a similar large pored, course texture, and presenting some of the same challenges when working. It is generally a bit lighter colored, with heartwood ranging from the lighter to darkers sides of medium brown, with dark brown to black streaks and/or highlighted grain lines. Darker examples can be easily confused with Wenge, and they have been known to turn almost black as they age." BTW, that finish is giving me some ideas. Nice video and really nice looking bowl Matt.

wenge is Millettia laurentii and panga panga is Millettia stuhlmannii. Very similar appearance. Panga Panga has slightly lighter tones in my experience but more obvious oxidation / color change over time when left unfinished.

its pitch spray some white spirit on your tooling before turning stops the pitch buildup on them same as with with pitch pine and any other high resin woods mate

I could be mistaken but it looked like you were turning the outside backwards (rim of the bowl to foot) you should always to from the foot to rim of the bowl as this lays the fibres down and cuts them cleanly (general rule). Going backwards could explain the difficulties you had and it is Silica in the timber that kills cutting edges. If you think Wenge is hard to turn you should try some Australian Turpentine! ;) Great result though!!!

I like the bowl and the finish, but I think I would have tried colored chalk and then applied a finish over it rubbing both in on the lathe. May I offer a turning tip? Put as piece of masking tape on the front of your lathe's bed or ways, flush with the top edge. Then you can use a square sitting on the ways and square the face of the chuck down to the tape. Turn the bowl and square the lip of the bowl down. Now you know the depth of the bowl from the jaws to the rim. With a straight edge across the bowl, measure the internal depth and check that against the tape. Now you know the thickness of the bottom without removing the bowl and remounting it. Easier to do than explain.

You could probably just melt the crayons onto the bowl while it’s running. Just run the crayon all over the surface and heat it up by holding a paper towel to it. That should fill in the grain very uniformly.

It's silica, jatoba is rife with it. It's that pore structure in the grain, sucks it right up! Beautiful bowl.

What screws are you using? If you are using something akin to drywall screws, they are strong and hard, but because of that they are also more brittle, so they will break off with more torque. Stainless steel screws are winners in this venue!

WhenGay, sounds more like an African word. I think Wenge, like Zebrano, is part of the Ebony family, very dense, very hard and has high content of Silica to help dull your tools with unprecedented efficiency. Loved the video though, how say you?

They are from the same family but quite different woods. No, panga panga is not wenge. Sometimes shady wood dealers will try to convince you that it`s the same but it`s not. They don`t even look the same. Panga panga latin name is Millettia stuhlmannii and wenge is Millettia laurentii.

@@EvulDali in all fairness to genetics, yes. central and western Africa vs northern Africa i believe. still, as far as appearence and workability goes, since they are from the same genus of plant and have the same tendencies and attributes they are for all practical purposes the same save for price from a shady type as you mentioned. i have both here at home in planks and slabs for my guitar buildings and side by side, even 2 pieces of wenge have subtle differences in appearence as does any wood. it was once a living organism and no 2 are identical in view.
