one thing i'd like to point out is as someone who works with rubber bands they snap after a while of being stretched, so the succulents will just unravel after time. I'd recommend some hot glue to secure them together

Yeah, I recently found some Koosh balls from my childhood (they’re made from similar stuff as rubber bands and these would have been from the early-to-mid 90s). I picked them up and they literally crumbled in my hand because they were so brittle. They just fell apart. It reminded me not to use rubber for anything long term.

I was thinking that the succulents may fare better being stitched together -- either way, cheap floss or glue would probably be better for their longevity.

For anyone wondering, that bracelet technique is called Kumihimo and you can find so many patterns for them 😊

The bracelet kit seems like one of the better kits I have seen, as you can just keep buying more embroidery thread and keep using it afterwards. Plus, there is room to grow with it. I may look into it as a gift to give in the future. I was excited about the shark kit, as I know some shark enthusiasts, but was sad to learn that it does not have enough supplies to properly make.

Yes! I got one just like it for my birthday when I was probably 8 years old, and I still use it all the time almost 20 years later! And you can find different patterns online if you get bored with the kit! My sister had a different version of one that had cardboard circles instead of foam, and those wore out very quick, so I'd definitely recommend making sure it comes with the foam!

Utterly baffling that the shark didn't give enough yarn. That yarn is *cheap*, they should have included double what you need. I admire your perseverance and determination in making it work. I like the succulent kit in concept but I feel like it could have benefited from some basic changes to the kit's design, like having you apply the pastels to the succulents using a stipple brush instead of just rubbing it on, and maybe spraying the felt with hairspray before applying the pastel chalk so that it would have a better surface to apply to. I'd be tempted to repot them into some cheap terracotta pots for the aesthetic, honestly. The third kit is pretty cool, they didn't call it what it is, but that's a kumihimo wheel. Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese method for making cord. If you ever want to look up more patterns to make with your wheels, there's lots you can do with kumihimo. I am fond of doing beaded kumihimo, it comes out looking so cool.

Great tips for the succulents set! I was thinking of buying it for myself after watching this video as I can see its potential to be super cute. I agree that the shark craft was egregiously under-supplied: we as adults know that sometimes companies cut corners, but imagine the frustration of a child trying to figure out why they can't get it to work correctly.

you can actually make the “friendship wheel” bracelets with a cardboard circle! you don’t get a guide for the colors, but you can do it without buying the kit (you just have to make sure you have a hole in the middle of your cardboard and notches around the edges)

The bracelet kit is awesome! Easy enough, but takes enough time it doesn't seem worthless to buy a kit for, and reusable since you can buy more embroidery thread and keep making them.

OMG! I noticed that right of the bat. They printed the label in such a creative looking font, and MISSPELLED it. Then again, I kind of get irritated when I see misspelled text - especially on tattoos!

I wonder if hair spray would help the chalk stay put without making them too weird? Good job sticking with it on the shark! 👍 One of the reason for just drawings is that they don't have to put multiple translations in the box. That way, everyone is confused the same way!! 😂🤣 Those bracelets came out really cute!! 👏👏

i took a horticulture class in high school and it was a little funny seeing you do the exact thing i did while making pieces with the succulents. a lot of it is trial and error and figuring out what looks good. personally i think it would be a cute gift for an older kid around 13-14.

ooh the kumihimo is TEMPTING, i want to get a kit, but id want a little stand so i could do it two handed. my standing embroidery hoop has spoiled me xD i dont understand why craft kits dont include a simple blurb about what a method is actually called and where it came from. it would add very little cost, and would encourage kids to do research when things interest them! the shark kit confuses me. a little bit of glue included and we could wrap the corners from the outside, and then resume the usual method. or maybe a blanket stitch style of looping would be less annoying than wrapping... hm whatever method they used to cut the succulent felt out, it couldnt be that difficult to alternate the distance between the leaves so that wouldnt happen :/

Just an idea for those succulents, you could add a finishing spray to them to lock the chalk in- glue based or even a hair spray may work for that. The chalk would absolutely kill me, so kudos to you, you made them look great! I do second on that other comment of using hot glue to hold them together for the rubber brands possibly breaking in future.. that kit looked awesome but had such obvious fixable flaws ugggh!

Love love the bracelets. I literally said out loud.. ohh I want one! They are so cute! I have a HUGE bag of yarn in probably every DMC color. Loved Sharky too even though he was a pain. The succulents were cute with the chalk but they should have had little pots - one for each succulent. Just my opinion. 😀

honestly all my craft endeavors are clay (airdrying, polymer, etc.) or recycled plant pots so the other kits would have intrigued me more. the only one of he ones you tried that I liked was the friendship bracelet one

That shark kit is an unhinged thing to try and get kids to do 😭 they’d be so frustrated, not focused Painting the frame and then wrapping the yarn across would’ve been so much more kid friendly. It’s like these people don’t bother testing the kits with the age group they’re targeted at

The friendship bracelet uses the same procedure and steps as lace making! Because you liked it so much you might really enjoy lace making. I'm not a lace maker, I paint fine art on silk. To be slightly fair to Creatology, I noticed that there was some English/French text in there, so I'm guessing the wordless instructions were so they didn't have to provide full instructions in two languages, and not because they intended the craft for kids. Even as a craft for adults to do, though, yeah, that sucks fairly large. :/ You shouldn't have to un-ply the yarn and use your own glue to get it to work.
