My grandmother had such a fireplace in the house. I will never forget how she explained to me how to use it. There were hooks and rods about 2 metres high. Everything that was smoked was hung on them. Then there were 2 chains above the fire, each with a pot hanging from it. When it was boiling, the pot hung very low down. To keep it warm, it was higher up. Then there were bedpans in the corner. The embers from the fire were placed in them and then these pans were taken to bed to keep warm. Wonderful...what a time.

I was trying to envision how the fireplace could be staged once the old range was removed. Your description of your grandmother's fireplace sounds beautiful, and a lovely way for Billy to utilize his excellent collection of copper. I think kids would love to have their photos taken while standing inside the fireplace. At around 2.5 m across (I was adding as they were measuring), as many as six or seven young children could stand shoulder to shoulder.

I agree with some of the other comments; the cooker would be a wonderful addition to the Chateau's basement kitchen. I once lived in a house with a similar fireplace. There was an iron shutter in the chimney which you could open and close. When closed it prevented dirt falling down into the room. Once in a while I opened the shutter to clean what had fallen down.

Also shutter can be opened regularly to vent the chimney for prevention of condensation build up. The condensation can migrate through the chimney walls drawing soot sulfates to the wall surface.

​@neild2148 this is exactly the problem we had. What I thought was a leaky roof turned out to be condensation from having the chimney capped to tightly. It's damaged upstairs and downstairs walls. Ventilation is SO important.

Loving the idea of lighting up the inside of the fireplace. I didn’t mind the old range in the fireplace until you started putting a lot of other stuff on it. Then it started getting messy looking. If you take it away I feel you need to replace it with something. Maybe an antique fire grate and an old iron back plate. Put some pretty birch logs on the grate. ❤️😊

I like the antique range in the fireplace, but if you don’t want it there, you could replace it with a couple of large, impressive andirons, or firedogs. They always look fabulous in a huge fireplace.

I will take the cooker. It is absolutely wonderful. It may have to be disassembled to ship to the USA. I can add it to my 1910 and 1940 stoves, both of which still work.

Yes the fireplace is such a feature without the antique cooker. Use in your Chateau kitchen. If it is unable to be a cooker add a cutting board top and use as a countertop or even island.
