I see where you’re coming from with twilights moments between starswirl and starlight. At 20:14. But heres the reason I personally can understand and even relate to it. These are the ponies telling her that she, for lack of better term, screwed up by releasing the pony of shadows. Starlight before and starswirl after. So she aims to try and make it up to both of them, but doesn’t want to act rashly and cause another mess. But at this point, the two people who she is referring to as voices of common sense are on opposite sides for finding a solution. She wants to agree with both sides but is hesitant because of a fear combination. That being doing the right thing and doing the greater good. Twilight is being pulled to both extremes, but wants to know for certain which one is right before she decides, but is never being given the opportunity. Notice how she never really responds to either side, because she never gets a chance to speak. She only goes along with starswirl because she reasons, “starswirl has more experience, he will know the right thing to do.” Because thats how she has perceived him her entire life. Its a psychological imprint. The reason this was placed here was for dramatic irony. Where we see twilight screw up in starswirl’s realm of expertise, we later see starwirl screwed up in twilight’s realm, shattering this illusion of prefection for both twilight and starswirl. And thats the point. No matter how much we have learned, we can always learn and understand more than we already know. Starswirl was brilliant with magic, but was not as well studied into friendship and made a very common mistake.

Heck, Celestia straight up said back in season 3 that Starswirl didn't understand enough about friendship to complete that spell. Twilight had already surpassed Starswirl in that regard but she didn't realize it, probably because she was still blinded by her hero-worship.

Why would they worry about doing the same for the pillars? Sure they should have seen the pony of shadow coming, but still,with their track record there wasn't too much to worry about.

I think the biggest oversight by twilight in the first half was that time wasn't an issue, even if the 3 day study session had to stay, the Monet twilight knew the fate of the pillars they all knew they had all the time in the world, they didn't have to bring them out at a moment's notice, they weren't on a time limit, there wasn't some threat to take down. they could've talked to Celestia and all the princesses' discussed whether to bring back Starswirl and had everyone there and ready if something went wrong

A better way to go, I think, would have been to have it so that Stygian tried to gain power on his own and ended up messing with something that he really shouldn't have. His friends try to convince him that what he is doing is crazy but he doesn't listen and is ultimately corrupted. His friends are then forced to stop him, albeit reluctantly. Yes, it's been done to death but at least this way the Original Six wouldn't come off as a bunch of unreasonable assholes.

But, given what we've seen of how hard it is to pound any idea into Starswirl's head that didn't originate from there to begin with, I can fully buy somepony being convinced asking first would have been futile and going with 'Better to beg forgiveness then ask permission'.

The pillars are under no obligation to hear him out if he steals from them first 3. By not even trying to communicate his issues and just stealing from them, he stops being sympathetic, especially when he spends the rest of the episode acting like the pillars betrayed him when they really did nothing wrong.

This entire thing should have been a season long arc instead of being crammed into a few disconnected episodes. Though, since MLP is marketed as an episodic SOL show for young kids, this might be the best the staff can do. Kinda makes me wish they would just drop the action and adventure portions as the show is way too restrictive to utilize either to their fullest. As for the Pony of Shadows himself, I kinda wish they didn't banish him. The 'light is good, darkness is evil' thing annoys me to no end. However, as I mentioned in my previous paragraph, this is aimed at young kids.

Hey, not ALL of the villainous ponies we've seen are unicorns. Dr Caballeron and his henchponies straight up tried to murder Rainbow Dash and he even went with the whole Bond villain slow death and gloating method. Sure he didn't go and take over the capital or wipe out all life on the planet or turn into a demon and his henchponies could be outsmarted by a rock (and I'm not even talking about Boulder), but he's got the kidnapping and monologuing parts down pretty well.

Ahh Stygian. The Kylo Ren of MLP villains. Both have the same massive problems. Both always look and sound like they're about to start crying. And both have no concept of proportional response. Kylo: My uncle tried to kill me. So I'll join up with a sith lord who's trying to reconquer the galaxy and kill literally trillions of people in the process! Stygian: My friends kicked me out over a misunderstanding. So I'll destroy all light and happiness in the universe! I don't ask for much from villains. Just not to be told to feel sorry for them when they are literally causing genocide to people who did nothing to cause their personal problems, and said genocide doesn't even fix the problem they have. Both villains feel like little children throwing a cosmic temper-tantrum and not caring who they kill. I can't feel sorry for either.

When it comes to the Pony of Shadows, let's not forget there were TWELVE powerful Magic users involved with six powerful elements of Magic. The six original Pillars together sealed him in Limbo. This episode was the Pillars + the Mane 6 + the Elements of Harmony brought together against one villain. The power dynamic was just that in favour of the protagonists in this episode.

Here's the thing about The Pony of Shadows though: he was still completely in the wrong for stealing from his friends, and there was no grey area whatsoever because he never spoke up. Besides, stealing from your friends can't be justified with "they didn't respect me, so it was the only way to get them to do so". To put it simply, STEALING FROM YOUR IS A BAD THING TO DO AND IS HOW TO GET THEM TO DISRESPECT YOU INSTEAD OF RESPECT YOU. Seriously, how did no one know that? No Starlight didn't get good moments in this episode because she was too busy pretending that we should just let Stygion roam around unchecked. There's a reason why we tell our kids that stealing is a bad thing to do, right? The Pony of Shadows isn't the worst villain in the series, but he is sitting in the number 4 spot for a reason. I have a top 10 worst episodes lists somewhere in my notes, and the fact that the theme of the episode is that you shouldn't punish people for theft (and that you should take it from a person who tried to destroy the fabric of reality out of spite) is enough to put Shadow Play at number 7 on the list.

Huh.... I still am not seeing most of those problems. The whole, make Twilight conflicted between Starswirl and what she knows is right was there, she was doing that, hell it was really the driving conflict for the second half. You could tell just by her expression every time she talked to Starlight how conflicted she was about this. But this is Twilight, we've seen how hard it is to go against a trusted, respected mentor for her, and that's just with Celestia, who we know is open to hearing those concerns and it's all in Twi's head that she'd be exiled for saying anything contrary. When it's somepony like Starswirl, who makes very, very clear from the start he expects everypony to accept everything he says as perfect fact and who clearly is not open to being questioned, yeah she's going to clam up. Hell, even in the clip you showed it outright made that clear, as she was trying to respond to Starlight until Starswirl barged into it and laid down the law of how things were. Which leads to the whole 'The Pony of Shadows was underwhelming as a villain' bit, because, yeah he was, look at who he was facing. Trying to play up him as a major, hard to overcome threat when dealing with a vastly more experienced then ever Mane 6, already with the Elements, Starlight, AND the Pillars? It would have been laughable at this stage and just felt like trying too hard. The story was never about beating him, that was a given pretty much from the start that they would do it. The main conflict was about HOW to defeat him. What they would have to sacrifice to do so, and whether Twilight would blindly follow Starswirl, or do what she knew deep down was right. The rest, is just pacing issues that are really minor to the point of barely being noticeable compared to the usual ones we get. Rushed pacing is simply an endemic issue for the show that is almost always there. Though ALL THE YES! On this should have been The Movie rather then the actual Movie. Both to help smooth out those pacing issues, and becuase, it's just plain better then the Movie was.

One more thing I want to add is that it's pretty unfair to call these continuities bloated as compared to season 4. Yes the season 4 ones were built up with more hype, but they were planned and contained in 1 season only. These were continuities from all the seasons way back: the origin of the element of harmony from s1, star swirl from s2, pony of shadow from s4, hell it even hints on the origin of Sombra and Nighmare Moon. It's really difficult and pretty amazing to string everything from start to finish like that. But I am gonna say it, making this a movie is not gonna work. The idea of the movie is a self contained, standalone story that even those who are not familiar with the show can watch. This story contains too much lore from the show that making it a movie is gonna kill the movie itself because no one except the die hard fans of the show can understand it.

You're not wrong about how talking (and listening) would've prevented the creation of the Shadow Pony in the first place. But if you think about how often that's true in real life, and how hard communicating can be, I'm giving it a pass. Besides, it makes for a good lesson. I feel like this finale was bloated with story and didn’t have nearly enough character or heart. It should’ve focused on Starswirl/Twilight more but we’ve got allllll these other characters to juggle.

21:00 Okay, while I do feel they were trying to go for the Twilight character dynamic you're talking about, I feel like the real reason she quietly stood by her idol, even when he was wrong, was very psychological. Accidentally releasing the Pony of Shadows was bad, but the utter scorn she got from Starswirl as a result broke her. As such, her mind is horribly clouded by this need to win his approval, which this jack@$$ was never, EVER going to give her. Seriously, he may have good points, but if he hadn't changed with the ending, I would've strangled him myself.

I always felt that starswerl (I am not going to look upp how to spell that) should be the last to try to save stydian not the first after starlight and twilight. He refused even after finding out what happend, and twilight was goint to have to stand up to her idol and talk him in to doing the wright thing.

Twilight Kingdom is the best Finale to me and this episode. Shadow Play... eh, I'm not to happy with this. Not only is the battle with the boss very underwhelming but I had enjoyed the fact that Star Swirl was a pony of the ancient past and should have stayed that way. Not sure with the new ancient past ponies as I just learned about them, thus not really caring, but it should have had a much more deeper story. Like the lessons from each element of harmony learning about how their element came about, thus the tree of harmony, and finding their past ancestors as these new ponies next to Star Swirl. But that's just me.
