We were hoping to get Jenny's full Finnish Brutality runs up on BotR, but unfortunately a little mishap happened early on Stage 1, resulting in a DQ (disqualification) :( Jenny was a great sport, so agreed to talk about it! She also got a free run at the water stage, so we talk about that too, as well as what she'd have most enjoyed shooting at the match.

It took 15 years for my DQ, but it happened eventually. It was at SMM3G 2016. I was picking up my Beretta 1301 up off a table. My finger swept inside the trigger guard as I turned the safety off (located in front of the trigger guard) and I shot the table. Contributing factors: 1) safety location made it more possible 2) picking the gun up off the table flat made it more possible than an in hand or barrel start 3) I was exhausted and recovering from being sick with pneumonia so mental clarity wasn’t 100% 4) it was the 3rd string of a 3 string stage where only the best string counted. I had 2 strings that were already fast so I tried to push the speed and went too fast. I unloaded and showed clear on my own and declared “I guess I’m done” I felt a little bit better when I found out 2 other shooters did the same exact thing to get DQed at the same match.

Dude... I bet that felt shit! Mine was a complete brainfart on my 2nd (I think) IPSC match in the Netherlands back in the day. There was a shot around the left side of a barricade, and I was shooting a stock L1A1. I decided to take it left shoulder rather than lean out, and I had massive trigger stall to the point I thought the gun was jammed. I then, completely stupidly, looked down at the gun and *pressed the trigger hard*. I still to this day have no idea why, it's possibly the dumbest thing I've ever done with a live firearm. I almost got away with it too - it struck the wall only just outside the berm (indoor range) but that was a shot in an unsafe direction so DQ... And I've learned from it, and understand the importance of building muscle memory in what Jari calls "the other strong hand"!

It happens Jenny. I DQd at my last big match on the 7th of 9 stages. Knocked the pistol from my hand aggressively clearing a stoppage caused by bad ammo I had borrowed from another competitor. DQ is a horrible feeling and follows you until your next big match where you can redeem yourself. I enjoy watching Jenny in the Finnish Brutality Boot Camp videos. She handled this DQ episode well. Jenny is living the life most of us dream of shooting in the Finnish Brutality matches.

Too bad about the DQ, however it's interesting to see it being discussed. It seems too often it's just set aside and not mentioned much afterwards. I saw a lot of bulky mechanics type gloves in use at the match, I suggest Rothco Nomex USAF pilot's gloves for when you would rather not have a glove, but really should. Just trim a couple of inches off of the gauntlet portion, fold it over and hem it to have gloves so thin you can reload a revolver with loose ammo with them on. In cold weather they work well as a liner under a wool knit glove with a leather glove shell over them. That combo is good to -30f (although not for an entire 8 hour shift outdoors). I was really looking forward to Jenny's coverage and seeing how she used her match savvy and shooting skills to offset the brutality aspects of the match. I applaud her for discussing it and look forward to seeing more of her content in the future.

I dont now what the nordic armies use nowadays but the classic soloution is thin knitted gloves, thick wool mittens and leather outer mitten atatched to the wrist by leather straps. Just flick the wrist and leather mitten and wool mitten flies of and leave a thin glove on the hand.

Glad to see Jenny chatting about her experience, even if it's disappointing she didn't get to shoot more. I hope to see her stages from Desert Brutality soonish. True class and character! While nowhere near as much fun as actually competing, it's still a win. I was wondering why we haven't seen more of her in the match. When 'waves' were mentioned in the trench, I wondered if they were talking about heat off the rifle barrel, but apparently it was the actual buffeting of water waves. I kept thinking how hard it would be to get the casualty into the vehicle if it had had a skeleton... Jenny's comment about what to wear in the trench was interesting. Riga went in wearing shorts for that reason, but he said he was told he would be less cold with trousers, since body heat would take some of the cold edge off. I presume there was a balance somewhere in between? That said, I'm eagerly awaiting Ian's video with his combat kilt!!

Everyone can feel for Jenny. The planets and the fates eventually align to cause errors under pressure. And with each error, your mind amplifies the pressure to correct the errors. Wow that evoked some flashbacks in my shooting. I don't know which is worst, cringing at the errors at the competition, or every time I think about them afterwards. Still, good run Jenny.

Konnunsuo is a municipality mainly known for its historical prison, which is no longer in use. For example, the Duckburg prison in disney comics is called Konnansuo in Finnish translations in reference to the famous prison. (konna translates to crook as opposed to kontu, which translates to home environment)

The old prison actually serves as a deportation facility for the immigration service for people with flight/violence risk. It's a lovely place that is often the coldest place in southern Finland in the winter and hottest during the summer. Surrounded by marches with vicious horse flys ;)

Konnunsuo: used to be one of the most well known prisons in Finland, in the middle of nowhere, close to the Russian border. Closed 2011, became a refugee processing center after that.

She's a very likeable addition to the channel in my opinion! I think having to put the head under water would put the people wearing actual prescription glasses in a disadvantage. I am a "late starter" with glasses, needing them since the age of 24. And since then whenever it is raining, i have to use something that prevents water from getting onto the lenses as the droplets really impair my vision. (i either wear a baseball cap or a hat) Before needing glasses, water droplets on my motorcycle or ski goggles had never bothered me. (And while i am not able to use contact lenses myself, i remember most of my friends or collegues who always use them always took them out before swimming.)

There used to be a major prison in Konnunsuo between 1918 and 2011. It was originally a penal camp and the permanent prison was completed in 1935. It's near the town of joutseno (since been merged to the city of lappeenranta) right at the russian border in the south east.

So sad that this happened to Jenny, it's fun to watch her runs and she's also been a good benchmark for myself to compare against. But really the lesson here is to WEAR GLOVES while shooting! There are a ton of hot, cold, sharp or abrasive things out in a match environment (let alone FTX) and hurting your hands sucks big time. I wear gloves always when shooting, even on the hottests summer days. When shooting a pistol in cold environments, you can wear thin, tactile gloves for that and put on warm, insulated overgloves or mittens when doing something else. If you shoot a pistol with swappable backstraps or grip panels, you may want to try and go down a size when starting to use gloves.

If you carry for self defense it's probably not a good idea to train pistol always with gloves and then most likely have to defend yourself without gloves. Im not saying that it will make a massive difference but if you carry to save your life takeout as many variables as possible. How you grip a pistol is very important and if you always have the extra traction of gloves then under stress without gloves you my not grip it hard enough and then add liquids to your hands and it could cause you some problems just food for thought.

@@OTSOBerg-pn5gm You bring up a good point. Mission should drive training , as well as gear. In my case the mission is to be a good SRA and Brutality shooter, which allows me to bring whatever gear (within division rules) to the line. Living in Finland, there is both no need as well as no legal way to carry in public, so armed self defense is not a scenario I deliberately train for. I do believe I can still shoot just fine without gloves and wet hands, but it's not something I've validated recently.

@@OTSOBerg-pn5gm Down here in Alabama, where it rarely gets cold, gloves can be clumsy and off-putting, so I have to make a point to practice with them. It can also simulate the loss of feeling and dexterity one can experience under stress. In your case, the reverse may be true; get used to shooting with gloves, and bare-handed shooting feels odd.

@@petesheppard1709 I use mechanics gloves and I mostly train with them with carbine, because I expect that to be the most likely case of me using gloves. I live in the south as well I wouldn't be drawing from concealment with gloves so I don't want to confuse myself. Under pressure my hands get really dumb, and that's after years of bull riding and many other very stressful situations. Thats why I just pass on what I know as food for thought. Y'all would most likely out shoot me in any of these matches. They look fun though.

When wearing BA in the winter, you treat it like a warming layer. It should be the 2nd or 3rd layer and you wear a thick layer on top, you can see this layering model on SoldF. You should be a little cold when standing around, that way if you have to run away, you won’t over heat.

I have poor circulation in my hands so I wear gloves most of the year, different gloves for different situations, the right tool for the job, heavy leather gloves for gardening, Mexhanix insulated for working on cars in winter and Mechanix Fastfit for everything else, they are thin enough that I can tie my shoelaces whilst wearing them and grippy even when wet.

Good to see she got to run the later stage anyway. Do events generally not allow someone with a DQ to participate at all, or can they run the stages on their own as time allows for no score? I imagine that someone who demonstrates gross negligence or incompetence or something might get sent off; but here she wasn't sent home, so it's more of a scoring DQ than a gross violation. (not to undersell the risk of a dropped rifle that might flag folks) So in most events do folks who get such a DQ get to try other stages or is it forbidden, or just a matter of usually not having time to have non-scoring times run thru?

Generally in SRA a DQd shooter's not allowed to shoot the rest of the match. Some people leave right away, some stay to hang out with their squad, film runs or help reset stages. Our weekly club matches just bar DQd shooters from scoring. They still get to shoot the stages, because the objective of the club matches is to get in some reps and practice. If there was a major match with some super special stage, I don't think it'd be inconceivable that a DQd competitor (if it wasn't for gross negligence) would be allowed to shoot it just for fun, if there was free time between squads or at the end of the day.

I live in Sweden. I've tried shooting pistols with gloves, but I just can't. The tactile feedback I just so different. I therefore only shot bare handed, even in the winter. -30C is not fun, I tell you. For rifles I can use gloves just fine.

Hello from Canada! Wow, that looked like a tough match, but I'm sure it felt ten times worse. I direct matches throughout the summer at my range, and finish up in September because there are so many hunters, me included, who won't be around for matches. I don't actually want to run an IDPA match in the cold because of the danger of mishandling handguns. I feel bad for Jenny, She is proof that the best competitor can have a bad moment. Does anyone try only wearing an offhand glove for grip and no strong hand glove for control? Also how much did the casualty weigh? I was surprised that nobody tried to shoulder carry that dummy so they could toss it down rather than heave it up.

The casualty was heavy for a match prop, 55-60 kg / 120-130 lbs. I dragged it just fine and was caught off guard when trying to lift it into the back of the vehicle. Usually prop dummies such as there are half the weight of this one.

Cold wet hands don't work well. You lose grip strength, you lose the perception of how firmly you are holding or even whether something is starting to slip. Like Jenny said, she got out of sorts when crossing her arms to get the can in her left hand and the cold and wet just piled on from there. When I was living up north one of the considerations for my general duty carbine was that the grip and handguard had to be VERY high friction. It's less of a concern here in Texas since the odds of having hands going numb from the cold is unlikely.

Poor Jenny, Heart Breaking 💔 I have been through a few Cold weather gun mistakes, including a guy who's 22 was jamming on a snowshoe hunt and he managed to eject a live round into the fire at lunch (without realizing it) until it cooked off. But the worst was my own 😶, I was 12 or 14 we were hunting rabbits in Wyoming and I had on wool GI glove liners (but not gloves), my hands were still really cold and the wool liners were super slick on the shotgun. It's been 40 years now, but I think I had the shotgun tucked under my arm while I fished a shell out of my pocket, the Shotgun started to slip and with cold numbed hands and slippery wool liners I bungled the grab at the slipping shotgun so badly I both took it off safe *AND* hit the trigger!! Shooting a load of #6 shot into the ground just a few feet ahead of my cousins and myself. LOL it's been 40 years and I'm blushing as I write this. . . . it was that bad.

Would aggressively textured insulation panels help? I can see it work both positively (additional grip/friction) and negatively ( the nooks and crannies being a snow or ice trap)...being a desert kid, I'm allergic to snow and freezing temperatures.

I don't know the name, but putting that "self adhesive rubber tape" on the front handguard could help. That said, i would think that she now has that memorized in her brain forever and will deathgrip the rifle next time the hands are cold and wet to make sure nothing happens again.

Bad luck on the DQ Jenny but take heart in that imo, you had a "pretty safe" DQ (I don't have practical shooting match experience, just feral pest eradication and hunting in Aus, so no expert and don't profess to be) in terms of real risk to yourself and onlookers. I understand that the gun was Condition 3, loaded mag in, no round in the chamber? (can the AR-15 without a round in the chamber be put on safe with the hammer uncocked? I would assume it can be with the chamber empty & hammer cocked.) The only real handling & shooting experience I've had with a semi auto rifle was a Norinco SKK when I was much younger. Tbh I am limited to using bolt, lever and straight pull actions (pump rifles as well) in Aus without going through a lot of bulldung for a Cat C/D license (pump shotguns and semi automatic firearms). Best of luck in Desert Brutality if it happens and you're able to attend.

@aqualung says the lesson is TO WEAR GLOVES. I disagree. The lesson is to prioritise control of the weapon over everything else. J grabbed the ammo before going to the weapon. Dropping the ammo = Zero penalties (except maybe in a genuine-bedouin firefight)

Been there, where the cold just works against you, you think your hands work. But the feedback your are getting just isn't real. Once spent 4-8 minutes trying to get a pair of mittens on but I just couldn't manage it before I realised what was going one, had to pull them into my sleeves to warm them up.
