He's a very typical drunk, imo, like they said. I've never really been scared of drunk old men in Finland, because they're usually harmless and friendly. Even in cases I've received unwanted attention and comments (I'm a woman), I've also received an apology every time I've confronted them. Usually something like "I'm sorry, I didn't mean anything bad by it." Even when they've been angry and pissed off, it's usually not you they're angry at. They're angry at the world and the "system" and I think they just want to vent. Obviously everyone should still be careful, but I think 9/10 times the drunks are fine.
@beatnik6806Ай бұрын
Yeah nobody should even care what they say, they are not themselves and are very, very fckd up. So their comments never got into me. And they barely can keep themselves standing so a woman could probably easily get away if they turned violent. Absolutely anybody should be careful thought like you said because drunkards can be unpredictable too and could do damage.

Yup. I used to hang out more on the train stations of Finland capitol area long ago, when I was a "homeless" fella holding a dayjob to get my debts paid. During that year, I only had one "close call" sorta incident where this big fella (not criminal related) was confrontational to me because I had a small pocket knife I used to peel a mango I had bought from a store, so I could eat it. Damn dude just told me to put the knife away and I did, because I don't want a fight over a mango.

@@spoonzor1 Yeah, but that would be a rare exception, and not a rule and it appears to be in many other places. Also, the degree of crime they have to deal with on a daily basis affects that a lot. Finnish and American police are indeed very different. That aside, it’s good to note that the “customer” is drunk and it is winter. Police isn’t a taxi as mentioned before but on occasion if they are not busy they might give someone a ride home. However, if the person is incapable of taking care of themselves, the police has to pick them up or if need be call and ambulance. Usually the customer spends the night in jail and sometimes the police chooses to drop them home. The first police unit was a specialized crime investigator unit, not the typical patrol unit so they are likely to not have free space for people. The normal patrol police usually has a tagged van or sometimes a patrol car similar to USA.

The minivan or "Maija" is the usual ride that they use. It has double doors, and a bench where you (the customer / victim / hobo) sit with your back against the wall that separates you from the drivers. You might sit there in cuffs, or not. Depending on issues. These guys are from the violent crimes unit, and they propably don't have the room in their car. Also, there are no air fresheners that gets out that properly marinated Hobo bouquet. I once saw the police coming across a passed out hobo who had shit his pants. They called the younger patrol to deal with it.
@jarieljahbaba22752 ай бұрын
I dont think you can call these new cars maija, they are so far from the legendery mustamaija that could take 4 clients at time, these modern "maijas" have room for just one client at a time and because of that are much more ahdistava, whats the word.. anyway the point being that these new cars are shit.
@ilari902 ай бұрын
@@jarieljahbaba2275 I'd say anxiousness inducing, or really uncomfortable for that "ahdistava".
@ilari902 ай бұрын
I think also they might say that because they know there might be more cases coming which require it more, they don't want to act as a taxi. That was the guy's first question "take me to the shelter", but he hasn't done anything else than being drunk there, so they don't want to use time for that, sometimes they might do it on purpose and if they get that idea, "hey, this works and I don't need to pay a taxi", they'll use it in the future, and then they tell that to their compatriots in the shelter and they get this idea, too.

@@ilari90 I'd use the word oppressive or distressing for ahdistava. Could be anxious, too, but anxiety also translates to levottomuus (restlessness) and pelokkuus (fearfulness, timidness), so I think the nuance for ahdistava is closer to those two words.

In Finland if they have no room in the jail anymore, they bring the guy/ girl to his home. Otherwise there is a risk the person might pass out on the snow and freeze to death during winter. Usually these drunk old men are really fun to talk to they have million stories to tell and 0 problems with you as long as you are polite to them. Strange fact in Finland is that if you get into a fight and you accidentally kill the guy (I think it's called a man slaughter). You get 3 to 6 years jail time. Unless you were drunk then often closer to 3 years. From which you need to "sit" half. So that is like 18 months jail time. Many of these old drunken people are very ready to pay to price if you mess with them. That's something many tourists don't know and understand.
