The swastika on the plane is not a nazi symbol, it's much older than that and a symbol of good fortune. Finnish air force used it before nazis did. But it was dropped afterwards for obvious reasons.
@formatique_arschlochАй бұрын
Yes. Swedish count Eric von Rosen donated the first plane to Finnish air force at 1918. Blue swastika was his lucky symbol and to respect him that insignia was also painted on the plane. It then stayed. Nothing to do with nzis.

What the subtitles did not enclose was the explanation of the RPG man who said he hesitated to shoot when the tank had reached 150 meters distance since the rocket flew in an arc (like an arrow from a bow) and he did not want to risk missing, so he waited until the tank was less than 100 meters away, before firing, to ensure a guaranteed hit.

Us Finns are humble people. When war veterans and lottas are interviewed they always say the same thing: we did what we had to do. I don't know how Independence Day is celebrated in other countries but here it's always been about respect towards the veterans. The graves where the fallen ones are buried are called sankarihaudat - the graves of the heros.

But I want to assure you, most of finns are and were back then. Exaclty as you said, how fragile is humanity and how they understand it. Even though they are in situation as perversed as war is. Swastika has been a Hindu symbol for centuries and even for the Finnish airforce it was a symbol long before the literal A-hole formed the Nazi party and adopted that as their symbol. So, please, mind the context. Finnish swastika has nothing to do with the Germans and was a symbol of the Swedish nobleman who donated some of his planes to Finlnad.
@GugureSuxАй бұрын
This. The "Hooked cross" mark dates back millennias, and just like the Maltese Cross, which many people now confuse as the "iron cross", were widely used by countless nations and clans throughout the history, in various context. What many Americans definitely don't know is that even the raised right hand salute was still commonly used to salute the stars & stripes flag during the early 20th century. But that and the Charlie Chaplin mustache kinda went out of fashion after 1939-1945.

Veterans did incredible feats in Finland, which I am saddened that Finland now only remembers during its independence day. For many eastern Karelians and many many finns who lived in East beside the border and even in other side, this war was particularly memorable. Half of my family is east karelians, who fled to west karelia when Finland had occupied temporarily some parts of east karelia. Many of those karelians fled the chance they got, left their properties and took whatever cattle and belongings were portable. The men in East Karelia joined, partially by choice and partially because any pair of hands in defending their own right to live peacefully... even forcibly. My grandmother's mother left with her kids and family, when her father and husband went to fight. Her little brother was too young to fight, despite his eagerness to go with father. Uncles were also heading with their brother and nephew. When war was over, their insignias were given to their closest families and funerals later were kept wherever family decided to settle. Those who fought the war, were given a golden star in their gravestone to commemorate their bravery and sacrifice for home it deemed worth fighting for. Of course, wars Finland faced were not just simple hero stories, many finns arguably had no choice. Whether they went to fight or faced long jailtime or even death by their generals for attempting to disengage. It was brutal, especially when going against the most formidable neighbour Finland had faced many times, leaving only dreadful stories told by generations. It wasn't any easier to russians either. For many, inexperienced army training and overall cruel weather conditions during wars especially winter wars wasn't easy on them either. Aside of fighting against finns like backed down rapid animals, they lacked of long term munitions and during winter war even ended up having problems with cannibalism and mental health. The wars were horrifying. I cannot even imagine what veterans faced back then... let alone what terror soldiers felt on their very last breaths.

I am not sure what you meant by saying that you sometimes say we because that is how you feel. I just want to mention that if you feel so, then it's true to you and that's relevant and in most situations enough. We all belong into so many different we. We humans; we who live in Finland: we, who are or identify ourselves as males; we who share some opinions or values; we who see your videos (yes that is how it's written in Finnish too. A loan word from English, which comes from the Latin word vidare); we who see the historical situation now and know about history; we who are or have been in Lapland. Empathy is based on our ability to imagine and experience what others experience. At the neurological level Mirror Neurons has been the explanation for the mechanism for this.
