The point they try to teach you is to control your panic reactions and act rationally even when your biological reaction initially when you fall in freezing water is to go in shock. It will go away and you'll be able to get back on ice, if you just let yourself relax, keep your head cool without panicking and simply do what needs to be done. It's not actually even a scary situation, if you know what to do. But it's a situation where you can't afford to make additional mistakes. I have fallen through ice once as a child and once as an adult. Fortunately I knew what to do and I wasn't too far away from any warm places.

I would take -24°C over -15°C and windy any time. Also making fire is pain in the ass when the wind blows, not to mention heavy snowfall. 😁
@leopartanen875215 күн бұрын
Ps. Probably the coldest weather I've experienced, not the temperature, but the conditions, was -28°C at the army camp in Upinniemi, because the air humidity is higher than, for example, in Central Lapland, due to the sea breeze, the winds are stronger on the coasts, and the air humidity is higher than inland due to the sea. In Lapland it was probably -35°C at Kilpisjärvi, it was one of the coldest experience I can remember both in terms of temperature and conditions.

In Finland scouts group for kids taught them to make their own awls and then they could (voluntary of course) test them while swimming in the icy water. But there were ladders too and warm sauna. We used to push each others to dive in the icy water as kids getting major brain freeze from it and then heat the sauna to 100 celcius and stay there until we were all red and ready to swim in the icy water again.
@samijarvinen659915 күн бұрын
Well, I got to say this. You can't compare south and north just straight up. Here in south and west parts of the country it's usually more humid and on the coastline it's always windy. So our -10 here is your -20 and so on.

I have lived my life in southern Finland. First time when I travel to Lapland I was amazed how -20 degrees felt so warm. I used my spring jacket when I was skiing. Cold is not only about temperature, also humidity effect how cold temperature feels. And of course wind. In Helsinki -20 feels much colder than in Lapland. 🌬️❄️

Cold isn't really that hard to endure. Heat is way worse, there is limited amount of clothes you can take off, but you can always add more.

We jump to icy water with clothes on, then climb out to ice, take naked and put dry clothes on in minus 15 C. Firstly it is a hell, but when You get dry clothes its a heaven and feels hot, youre so warm because body speeds up heating. Ones You do it, You understand it, just have to do it. If dont, you freeses, propably die if there is no heatet place.

Some of the things we think we don't like might be important to learn. They might even become enjoyable for you. I have personal experience of learning to enjoy swimming as an adult. There are ways to learn swimming by learning first how to stay afloat with minimal effort. That is a key first step to make water less dangerous for you and to become relaxed in water. Then you better try diving, becoming used to being under water. Give enough time, a lot of time, for all this and don't force yourself, since then it will become or stay something you will not enjoy.

Have you noticed that your video was shot in mirror image? I noticed it when you were showing the temperatures on the weather report on your phone, and I didn't immediately understand why I couldn't get what was on the screen. Turn off mirror image in the settings, and your shirt's collar will say NASA the right way up. Your reactions were great, like when you found out the location of the event and when the Finnish instructor stopped a US sergeant from climbing up an icy cold opening to ask the sergeant the name of his service station.😆

I wish they make a small brigade for those who didn't get to join because of their age (28+). Most immgirants miss their opportunity. They could have english only service for 180 days. Multipurpose soldiers into reserve up to age 60. Would you join? Would you be the hero of Sodankyla 2026?

It's not the purpose of the Finnish Defence Forces and conscription system to offer people the opportunity to feel they are heroes or have some extreme experiences. Finnish conscription meets the requirements of the security environment and generates sufficient resources for the Army, Navy and Air Force to act effectively in a crisis or war situation. Conscription is a cost-effective way of generating a large and capable reserve. There are also other trainings and organisations offering defence and crisis management training and information. There are several associations active in this field. Voluntary defence training in Finland The National Defence Training Association of Finland, (MPK) established in 1993, is a national training organisation, which trains and educates citizens to be prepared for and to survive dangerous situations in everyday life and under exceptional conditions. With this training, we improve and support the readiness of the Finnish Defence Forces and other authorities under normal and exceptional conditions. We work closely together with other volunteer organisations doing security training, educational and informational work. Training and education We offer: - military training for Finnish Defence Forces reservists - familiarization training for youths aged 16 and older - information on voluntary national defence - safety, security and preparedness skills training - instructor and leadership training - In addition to separate courses our training programs also offer the possibilities to obtain certifications in some of these subjects. The aim of military training is to support The Defence Forces by offering training that maintains and develops the skills of the reservists. The courses supplement the training provided by the armed forces, focusing on local defence task training. The training is directed and supported by the Defence Forces and includes e.g. basic training, specialized training and leadership courses. The training is taken into account in reserve promotions. Security training prepares citizens to manage in daily life emergencies and under exceptional circumstances. The courses include training in basic safety skills, e.g. first aid, fire extinguishing, self-defence and orienteering skills. We also support municipalities and other civilian authorities by offering preparedness and civil protection training that promotes preparedness of the citizens, formations and community under exceptional circumstances. Subjects taught include for example search operations, evacuating, mass lodging and provisioning. We train our own instructors. Eligible candidates for instructor training are adults who are skilled and interested in their own field and who are actively participating in voluntary training. The training takes place in 7 national defence districts the naval defence district and the air defence district. Approximately 50 000 voluntary citizens participate in the courses each year. The MPK is an organization with 14 member organizations. Most of the member organizations are NGOs in the national defence field, and the MPK’s cooperation partners include e.g. the Finnish Red Cross and the Finnish Rescue Association.
