Very nice job. It just scared me a little when hewing the log. The axe dangerously played to the side a couple of time. I couldn't help holding my breath. Stay safe!

Beautiful work! I made a log bridge across a stream at my home, but I was much lazier than you. 😊 I just put the log next to two trees, one on each side of the stream. Then I strung a rope between the two trees at about chest height. To use the bridge you hang on to the rope to keep your balance.

That works as well :)

I did the same thing (15 years ago, it finally rotted out and needs to be replaced), but for the handrail I used a long straight tree that was only 4"-5" in diameter and strapped it to the two trees on either side of the creek.

Very nice video. How do you sharpen your tools?
@FinnishPlayground4 жыл бұрын
To be honest I’m very beginner what comes to sharpening tools. Just using a simple stone and water.

Where can one purchase a draw knife liked the one you are using?

Nice job. I have to rebuild a bridge over a similar-sized creek, that's how I found your video. I'm worried about the joints that connect the posts to the main log -- won't the wood shrink and make those posts very unstable? It's been 3 years, I'm curious how the posts are doing now.
@FinnishPlayground Жыл бұрын
Posts are fine, but there was some heavy floods and the whole bridge sailed away :P Now it's back in place though. However the joints could be better, but this was really quickly done.

Thanks for responding. That reminds me -- I put my logs against the upstream side of two trees, which prevented it from being washed away by floods. And I know the area does flood above the level of the bridge in the spring because on top of it I find branches and debris that have obviously been washed down.

That curved draw knife is quite effective at peeling bark from a log. Kinda of a shame the log your felled had such a curve to it.
@FinnishPlayground4 жыл бұрын
I actually like that curve 😊 And it’s very stable because the weight is so low. But bigger log would have been better of course.

Question: are you a lefty? Just asking myself what the reason is for you to hold the axe with the left hand holding the upper part of the handle. Nothing wrong. Just curious.

Hienoa työtä! Kuinka monta kertaa meinas kirves livetä lähelle nilkkaa?
@FinnishPlayground4 жыл бұрын

Simpler solution :-) we once hiked in New Zealand the Hollyford Track (google it) and had to cross a river with a simple steel cable construction. It is now way more sophisticated then than (1995). But at that time it looked like this: nzdeercullers.org.nz/images/cowcreek_3wire1957.jpg ... and it was fun.

I was planning some kind of rope bridge to the bigger creek. Let’s see when I’ll find time for that 😊

Better to use the natural local materials as shown in the video.
