I love this cabin and your attention to detail. As someone who builds decks for a living I just wanted to suggest you put some spacers where the ledger connects to the house. It could just be some 1cm-1in chunks of plastic or washers or even wood, each place where you’re screwing. Please! I know you’ll have to move everything out a bit but you won’t regret it. I can’t stand to watch your sill log rot from water getting trapped there. It only takes a few years with softwoods like pine and fir. Congrats on an awesome build friend!

Thanks for the comment! I would be concerned if the porch would be without roof. Do you think it's still a problem even though there's not much water getting there?
@PerkBuilders4 жыл бұрын
Finnish Playground Not as much, for sure. It helps. Another option would be putting a 90degree piece of metal flashing over the crack, but it’s tricky sealing it to the face of the wall. Anything to try to keep water out of that joint is good. Even caulk could do the trick if you kept an eye on it
@FinnishPlayground4 жыл бұрын
@@PerkBuilders I have seen in some saunas this technicue: make a small diagonal cut to the wall and attach there a piece of sheet metal or wood. That could be one possibility if it seems to get wet.

Put it on the bottom so that you can slap some trim on the side of the log and you can hide the screw that way and the trim can be mounted to the porch and then it can move up and down without affecting it just like trim you put around a window but just put it around the log at the bottom you can't hide it

Impressive precision! Just a few mistakes but they are small, so don’t worry about them. We see how incredibly good you are at your craft. I have a couple questions (being an experienced do-it-yourselfer myself): 1. Why use stacked rocks for foundation instead of pouring concrete piers? Those stacked rocks looked like they could topple or slide off one another with any kind of ground vibration. 2. Will you be installing electricity, or keeping this rustic with kerosene light and heat?

I used natural rocks because I love how they look and also they doesn't have any impact on the environment. I'm not worried about them sliding off.

We are not living in a perfect world 😉
@thornyturtleranch4u4 жыл бұрын
@@FinnishPlayground ah yes, the world is far from perfect. And that work you did was absolutely beautiful. I am as we speak at the point of building a cabin to live in. I dont have time unfortunately to dove tail and will rely heavily on metal fasteners. However the only thing I ever use a nail for is holding some trim in place while it glues, and then I remove said nail. My comment seemed critical but it was not meant to be. Thank you for putting your work and project to video, I very much enjoyed it. I watched all episodes while my wife and I are driving 1900 miles to my 12th or 14th eye doctor appointment. I have a special device in my left eye that saved my eyesight in that eye, working perfect for a year now. Hoping to get the same device in my right eye but only 36 people in the world have the device. My cabin building dreams were on hold due to loosing my eyesight fast but I now have these dreams restored. And my current living situation is not ideal so I need to rush my first cabin a bit. It's going to be a combination of log, timber, and stick wall framing on concrete columns. Recently I have happened upon a very good supply of large cedar, a very rot resistant wood for my very humid south louisiana environment. I have a few videos of my adventures collecting the cedar logs and will have more.
@FinnishPlayground4 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's a long way to drive! Quite often you would like to do something more than you actually can. I was dreaming of shingle roof, but no chance to do it right now. But dreaming is good, and maybe I can replace the roof later on. All the best for you and good luck with your cabin project!

@rocky26154 жыл бұрын
Rule of thumb for log building is 6%, or the equivalent 3/4" Per foot, as the settling allowance. This means that every virtical foot of log wall should be expected to settle about 3/4". Why allow 6% simple: settling is made up shrinkage and compression, and logs compress about 1% under the weight of the building. Plus, we must allow a bit extra as a safety factor, and this is built into the 6% allowance. Shrinkage (4%) + compression (1%) + safety (1%) = 6%. So a wall 7' tall will settle down to 6' - 6 3/4". 7' × 3/4" = 5 1/4" 7' - 5 1/4" = 6' 6 3/4" I recommend picking up a copy of The log construction manual By Robert W. Chambers. It's a great book filled with helpful information about log building. Hats off to you for taking on this challenge.
