I just need to mention this too; one of my friends gatekeeps old metal and rock bands and I don’t understand why he cares, like dude, Metallica has been around for 3 decades before you were born 💀. The "being born" thing has nothing to do with it. It's cool to know the history and how things started. I was listening to 80's metal first when I was a teen in the 2000's, then moved on to 90's and then "current" music. That helped me to understand things a LOT more. Good music is timeless, it doesn't suddenly "expire" when you are born. Saying you don't like or listen to something because it was from before you were born is just being willingly ignorant.

Metal is coming back & young people are identify with it for the same reason "classic rock" (or what I call old rock) returned in the mid-2000s at the time emo grew. Some people hated the music of the day & needed something so they looked back & found something they could jam to. How else do you example the Van Halen tees at my middle school in 2006.

I'm 46 and what I remember the most about the whole Megadeth/Metallica thing was that Dave Mustaine thought he got fucked over because as soon as Metallica got signed to a major label they fired Dave and I heard he got upset because he wrote a lot of the songs from the Kill'em album. Some people have gone as far as to call the album Dave 'Em All because of how much you can hear his style in that album. Imo I think Dave Mustaine is the best thrash metal guitarist out there but his vocals aren't that great and for that reason that is why they will never be as good as Metallica. Anyway there are both good bands who are a part of the big four of thrash metal bands. Personally I think the big 4 should be Slayer, Metallica, Testament and Exodus

What got me into the metal rabbit hole was ghost they are a good starter band because it's like a mix of glam rock and metal, from there I got occult metal that was similar to the vibes of ghost. From there I got into doom, nu metal, deathcore and black metal. It truly is a rabbit hole wherever you start. Yet I don't understand how metallica is a starter band. As a middle schooler but it never got me REALLY into metal, it just got me interested in 80s classic rock. Like in 8th grade I had this playlist I constantly listened to consisting of bon jovi, journey, boston and of course metallica. So yeah I can't really image getting into metal from the starting point of metallica, because their sound led me down a very different route. But I don't know if that was just me being a weird teenager or not.

You can know bands/be aware of them but not recognize a song. It's pretty apparent his main music isn't European Metal. I mean let's say he's checked out (as an example) a few CoB songs in the past and realized he didn't care for their music, it's not like he's going to know their whole discog nor be able to quickly recognize it's them. I know a ton of bands by name, with a lot that I've checked out and decided not to dig deeper because I wasn't intrigued. Would I be able to pinpoint them with a 10 second sound bite? Probably not.
