Lyrics:
I tell you how I feel
But you don't care
I say tell me the truth
But you don't dare
You say love is a hell
You cannot bear
And I say gimme mine
Back and then go there
For all I care
I got my feet
On the ground
And I don't go to
Sleep to dream
You got your head
In the clouds
And you're not at
All what you seem
This mind, this body
And this voice cannot be
Stifled by your deviant ways
So don't forget what I told you
Don't come around
I got my own hell to raise

This is the quintessential break-up song. At just 14, she understood heartbreak better than most adults. This song is timeless and still kicks ass decades later. I can't believe it was the first song she ever wrote. She's a fucking musical genius and she doesn't get enough credit.

Many years ago I was in an LA bookstore late one night. Store was empty. I was in line to buy a birthday card for a friend. A girl was in front of me. She turned around, it was Fionna Apple. Might have been for the best. There are few things that can make a person feel as desperate and helpless as one does when being forced to watch as a friend self destructs due to a wound they carry which you can do nothing to soothe. Quite frankly I'm thrilled and surprised to see that she's still alive. The woman is a warrior no doubt. I just want to be clear here - I'm in no way suggesting one ought to avoid being friends with someone because of their personal struggles in life. I just was pointing out that you almost certainly would have hurt like hell if you'd had to witness first hand the brutal battles she's gone through over the years. From what I understand she's had a pretty tortured existence from her childhood onward.

I mean this in the most complimentary way. Apple is what they call an old soul, a great old musical soul. This song sends shivers down my spine.

This Fiona Apple Album had an embrace around me that was like a rejuvenation of my broken heart & deeply wounded soul. 💚 Forever grateful. P.s. Her level of intellect delights my soul, as well. 💫💫💫

What I find so interesting is the music on songs like Sleep to Dream, Criminal or Shadowboxer. Obviously the lyrical and vocal talent is what it is. But the music seems perfectly matched, almost as if no other music could even possibly be contemplated to be paired to the lyrical content. It's truly uncanny. And the selection of instruments, whether it is a percussive ragtime piano part, a bass drum accent, a xylophone or a slide guitar, gives the music as unique a feel as her lyrics or vocals, yet somehow feels completely natural and logical to the song. Amazing. I'd give money to see her and Corbin produce an album together.
