This fun and easy polymer clay cane is built with 3 simple Skinner Blends. Add a dark colour and you create a striking pattern. This versatile cane is great fun to make. I take you through the whole process, step by step, so sit back, relax and see how you can make one yourself.

As most "clayers" around the world now, I ran out of Premo white and decided to try this cane. I used blues and yellow and the basic cane came out pretty well. It really is a pretty pattern. I wanted to put more curve into the dark line and remembered you saying that turning a square into a triangle would give you a curved line. So I tried it. Got a curved line and a nice pattern but, by the time I had altered the cane, it was really too small. I plan to try it again in a different colorway and will use the entire cane instead of half. Thanks, as always.

Beautiful AND practical, these will be very well received as presents. I do find that making canes & veneers is a lot easier than thinking up applications for them. I love your colour choices - very striking against the black. Thank you as always Fiona :)

I just started with clay, my first project was putting the clay on my crochet hooks. This gives them a bigger surface area to hold on to. I was looking for a video of how to put designs on it and came across your pen tutorial. In about 3 days I have watched several of your tutorials, purchased some and tried this tutorial as I was watching. I love your tutorials and they have given me an understanding of what you can do with clay. Although I don't think my attempt will turn out, I can't tell yet because I orderes call that was sticky and it kept getting stuck to my machine. The more you worked with it the stickier it became, almost like chewed up gum. So it will sit overnight to see what I got. I got Sculpey III also, so tomorrow I will try with that. Thanks so much for your time to teach us your methods. I will continue to watch and learn, and practice.

Thank you Dawn, I am so glad you are enjoying the tutorials. Yes some clays can get very sticky when you work with them, and the firmer clays work better with cane techniques, the softer ones are better for sculpting with. With really sticky clays there are 3 things you can do, 1. depending on your time and patience. You can leech a block of clay by sitting it on white paper, and letting some of the plasticiser leech into the paper. This makes it firmer. 2. As soon as the clay starts to get sticky, stop working with it and leave it for at least half an hour before working with it again. 3. Finally you can wrap it up and put it in a fridge for half an hour or so. to really cool down. All of those take time though, so if you do start to get enthusiastic about making canes, then one of the firmer brands of clay would be your best option. I hope that was some help, and wish you lots of fun as you develop more and more polymer skills :)

@@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals I flattened the clay and sandwiched between 2 pieces of paper, then put my laminated grid paper over it and set a book on top. Left it for about 30+ hours. It made it less sticky and easier to work with. Sadly cane had to be scrapped. I did the same leached it. It held its shape alot better after leaching when I made another cane. So now I am conditipning the rest of that order and leaching it too. Thank you for all the information.

I found my soap cane project. Soap as what’s called a soap dough. It’s like play dough. I want to make a design similar to this. I’d cut the cane in four put it together then put in some cold processed soap which would act as it’s boarder. I’m so so excited I found you on my simple cane search. I’m also pulling out my polymer clay to make some boxes. As Gru would say “Light Buulb”. He’s the bad guy turned good on Minnions.

I love your videos! Thank you very much for sharing your talent with us! The only thing I would say is that you move much to quickly a lot of the time. I'm sure it's because you've been doing this for so many years. But for a beginner it feels super rushed. And sometimes you speak a little too quickly as well. I would hate to miss something :)
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Erika, I know I speak quickly and I get so enthusiastic. One thing I have discovered over time is that we all do things at our own natural speed. I have tried to slow down before now, and it all goes wrong, so have just learnt to accept that I work at that speed and speak that quickly because, well, that's me. I understand that makes it frustrating for others, and can only apologise, You can always pause the video of course, rewind, or even add the subtitles, and mute me completely if that helps ;)
