NB. at 24 minutes I mean tent in foil, not 'clay'! Thanks Rosie for spotting that :)
I had such great fun creating this box and really hope you enjoy making one too. This is however, a long, step by step tutorial on how to make this pretty patterned, 2-tiered trinket box from scratch. If you are looking for something quick this may not be for you 😉. But, if you want lots of great tips and techniques throughout to help you achieve the box base, the detailed cane, and then how to add the cane to create a good match, then relax, settle down and enjoy the video 😊
If you only want to make a box, go to 13.45 minutes.
If you only wish to create the cane, see the clay at 10 minutes, and the Making of the Cane at 36 minutes.
If you want to add a pattern that matches, go to Covering the Box at 1 hr 19.20 minutes.
I also cover converting a cookie cutter to a box template at 6.40 minutes.
The Oval Cutter and the CaneCaps I mentioned, are all from the Tiny Pandora Crafting Boutique, and can be found here: tinypandora.com/ .
If you are in the UK, then the Cane Savers from PCUK Tools can be found here: / pcuktools They now have a new Etsy shop too - www.etsy.com/uk/shop/PCUKTool...
Here is the link to Conditioning Polymer Clay - • Conditioning Polymer C...
Here is the link to creating Skinner Blends - • Basic Skinner Blend Tu...
The small round cutters can either be bought in a set specifically used for polymer clay from many shops on Etsy, (I originally got mine from MyMandarinDucky on Etsy - www.etsy.com/uk/listing/21137... ) but I have also bought them direct off eBay, where you can search under ‘Cord Pin End Crimp Terminal Wire Copper Connectors’ to find similar cutters, but you will get a huge amount all the same sizes.
For the mini screws, search under Eye Pins or Eyelet Screws, here is just one of many examples available at an online site - www.amazon.co.uk/Haobase100pc...
If you like my work, then please do have a look at my website, www.fionaabel-smith.co.uk/ and follow me on Facebook / fiona.abelsmith and Instagram. / fionaabelsmith.artist
I also have a number of Polymer Clay Tutorials to buy, both in my Etsy shop, PolyOriginals - www.etsy.com/uk/shop/PolyOrig... where I have more tutorials in a PDF format, and as a video tutorial here - polyoriginals.thinkific.com/co...
The music from the video is English Country Garden by Aaron Kenny and Waterfall by Aakash Gandhi, both available from the KZbin Free Audio Library.
Thank you so much for watching.

The. Best. Polymer tutorials on KZbin. Easy to follow, clearly explained, specific, and most of all, nice pieces that are not childlike, silly, or tacky. I'm sitting with my pasta machine, tools, and clay in front of me - making and following along like a cooking show! Thank you!

Just watched this from 3 years ago, so perfect. The cane looked pretty simple to make after putting it all together, it looks really intricate and such perfection. I saw the reply below, someone else who is so impressed with your voice, it is so calm and soothing. You are so talented, but I am sure everything takes time and practice, you have the patience, not sure I would, I don't need to I will just watch you. 🤩

There are quite a few polymer clay artists here on KZbin, but none create pieces that come close to being in the same league as yours There is a Japanese word that comes to mind every time I watch your videos: shibumi. Shibumi translates to “effortless perfection”. Of course your pieces are sheer perfection, but you make it look so easy too! I am in awe of your creativity and talent. You truly are in a league of your own.

I LOVE the longer, more challenging tutorials you offer. I am amazed you don't sell them! You could easily charge for what you produce, and have a line of waiting customers - not that I WANT you to, you understand, but still... I've been "doing clay" for 30+ years, and most tutorials seem to be aimed at the very beginner, or at most the advanced beginner level clayer. While this makes sense from the point of view of having the largest potential audience, it seems like a shame that there are so few things to lead people into more advanced or challenging projects. Your videos do this, while still being straightforward, very well-explained, and easy to follow. THANK YOU!

Thanks so much Gillian :) I do of course have some tutorials that I sell in my Etsy shop, and I have about 30 more ideas that I need to do as paid tutorials, so I am trying to get a good balance between doing these free ones, and doing ones that I get paid for too. That's the plan anyway ;)

Fiona- I apologize in advance- I know that I always write about a novel sized comment each time I leave 1, so I'm sorry. However, I'd 1st like to say thank you so very much for sharing this w/ us, your work is, as always, incredibly beautiful. And I really love that this is such a functional piece as well as a gorgeous one. You have left me in complete awe once again- besides how stunning this box is, the amount of time & work you clearly put into creating these amazing pieces & extremely helpful videos for us is just out of this world. You designed & created your own custom cane, you came up w/ a perfect way to create not just a beautiful box but a multi tiered one at that, you go through all the necessary supplies, you walk us through every single step so perfectly & patiently, you explain the reasons why certain things should be done in certain ways, you take the time to type out your own captions, you come up w/ what I think are such ingenious tips & tricks in order to do something (such as the string around box lid to give you the perfect amount of overlap & to help cut it out exactly right.. brilliant!), you even take the time to figure out, explain & show us exactly how much clay we'll need while considering to include a little extra so that we can be fully prepared ahead of time w/ enough clay while also ensuring we will have enough to not run out, and probably about a hundred more amazingly helpful things you say, do & show us which I am forgetting about at the moment. You know- I can not afford to spend any extra money each month by subscribing to different people on Patreon & I have to assume that I'm not the only one who can't do that. Yet it seems like almost everyone who once strictly showed tutorials on KZbin have now all migrated over to Patreon. I more than understand wanting to get compensated for the time, effort, supplies & aggravation that are put into creating tutorials, but it just kind of sucks for people like myself who just can't possibly pay them each month for great videos. Of course if you opened up a Patreon account we'd all understand & I know that many people would happily contribute money to watch your tutorials, but for those of us in my position, I'm extremely grateful that you are still here on KZbin. I know you have a whole slew of dedicated followers, subscribers, worshippers, etc. & by scrolling through the comments it seems like that group is full of many kind people who reach out to show their appreciation, and I'm so happy to see that. But I'd have to imagine that doing what you do must, at least at times, feel like such a thankless job- and yet, despite all the time, frustration, etc. it takes to do all of this, you still continue to do it. You are an amazingly talented polymer clay artist, and your tutorials are absolutely beyond exceptional. We are so lucky to have you share your incredible abilities with us and I hope you really do know just how loved & appreciated you are. Thank you SO VERY MUCH for sharing your extreme kindness, patience & the other million amazing qualities you posses with the rest of us. We are incredibly fortunate to have you as a teacher & role model. Ok, I believe I'm finally about done. I'm sorry for taking up so much of your time w/ this ridiculously long comment, I just wanted to say all of that to you. Thank you again. You are appreciated, adored & admired more than you'll ever know💗 -Jasmine

Oh, and of course I pray that you & your loved ones are remaining healthy & safe. I'm currently stuck at home, quarantined alone in my apartment, while sick with the coronavirus. I can not even have my 2 kids home w/ me or anywhere near me for awhile and it has become quite lonely. I've been really scared lately, as we all have been, and I'm sad without having my boys here. I've been extremely bored & that of course causes me to fixate on all the stress, fear & anxiety I have for my boys, myself, and the rest of the world. I just lost my uncle to this damn virus that I'm currently fighting off, and that has only intensified the sadness & very negative feelings. Seeing your video, especially since it was a nice & long one, has really helped to not only take my mind off of all my troubles for awhile, but it has even uplifted my spirits quite a bit. And, of course, attempting to make your beautiful project has now given me something to do for awhile which will also be incredibly helpful. I believe that the world always needs to see examples of good people, but your kindness is needed & appreciated right now more than ever before. So again, thank you very very much, and please stay safe💗

Absolutely beautiful! I haven't done any poly clay work for a while - thankfully I do have all my supplies on hand. This could take the mind off the pandemic and be a very long satisfying project. Your timing is great and as always your tutorials are so complete and easy to follow - even when they are as detailed as this. Thank you for sharing your talents!

Fiona, after several personally troubled years and ignoring the clay passion, I stumbled upon your tutorials. You have single-handedly gotten me back into the craft. I want to thank you and tell you how much I enjoy your talent, your sweet, calm voice, and your teaching style! Just two projects in, I have learned a ton, and my life feels happier! Thank you so much for the wonderful tutorial! I’m gathering supplies for this project. I was wondering if you could leave measurements for the products you are using so I can find similar products at my local craft store and hardware store. In particular, the measurements of the oval cookie cutter and the size of eye pin screws you use. Thank you!
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals 4 жыл бұрын
thank you Jessica :) The link to the eye screws are in the details below the video, (follow the link and it gives the size ;) ) as is the link to where the oval cutter came from :) I purposely didn't mention the size of the cutter as I didn't want anyone to get hung up on that. I have already seen photos of wonderful ones made using square and round cutters, so you can chose what size/shape you want. If you still needed to know, then the oval cutter was 8cm, 3.25 inches long. I hope that helps :)
@cutiepieob
@cutiepieob 4 жыл бұрын
Fiona Abel-Smith PolyOriginals thank you for your quick reply! I tried the link for the eye pin screws before I wrote the comment and it doesn’t seem to work. I don’t know if it is just because I’m in the US and the link is for Amazon UK. But I did end up buying a variety set on amazon for a few dollars so I will be covered for the project! Also, I should take your advice on the size of the cutter! I’m so particular when it comes to these types of projects but I should learn to just use what I have and go with the flow a little more. So that’s what I’ll do! Starting the project now! Hope it turns out okay. Thank you so much! ☺️

I have a technical question. I understand conditioning the clay and how it is like waking up the polymers. For baking the clay, does it matter if the polymers are awake? Will it matter if a piece sits for an extended time before baking?
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kathy, sorry not to have seen this sooner - It is better if possible to bake straight away, but a few hours/even days should be fine. If you leave it to sit for months, cracks will appear and then those cracks would be in the final piece too. So you do have some time to leave it before baking, but don't leave it too long. I hope that helps? :)

Thank you Becki, so sorry, I don't know where to get them from in the US. I buy from the UK, and I know the place I use doesn't ship them abroad :( You could try from this place though, although the shipping costs would probably be high. This is where I bought from back when I started, hence me always calling them Tissue Blades ;) www.georgeweil.com/tools/modelling/knives-blades-scissors/3-x-150mm-long-stainless-steel-slicer-blades .
