Performed by Taylor in HD with stunning sound quality.
A song - from his second album, "Sweet Baby James" -
about Taylor's experience in psychiatric institutions and
the suicide of his friend, Suzanne Schnerr.
Taylor explained to NPR host Scott Simon that the song was written in three parts:
The first part was about Taylor's friend Suzanne, who died while Taylor was in London working on his first album after being signed to Apple Records.
The second part details Taylor's struggle to overcome drug addiction and depression.
The third part deals with coming to grips with fame and fortune, looking back at the road that got him there. It includes a reference to James Taylor and The Flying Machine, a band he briefly worked with before his big break with Paul McCartney, Peter Asher, and Apple Records.
"Fire and Rain" is in the 227th position on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Lyrics follow:
Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Susanne the plans they made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to.
I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again.
Won't you look down upon me, jesus
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way.
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again.
Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things
To come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground.
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again, now.
Thought I'd see you one more time again
There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you fire and rain, now.

My brother has been gone for 10 years now. I have such a deep attachment to this song and that line in particular ever since his passing. I mean, I always loved the beauty of this masterpiece, but it definitely hits emotionally harder when you lose someone close. Stay strong my friend, and may life spare us from anymore heartbreak.

This song was written in response to his friend who commited suicide. Its poignant words reminds us that we are not guaranteed to see the ones we love tomorrow, and that we are our brother's keeper; being involved with those who may be lonely and alone so that we may see them one more time again

According to JT, the song is a three act play. One per verse. It’s about his friend who committed suicide. It’s about his battle against drugs and his own mental illness.

@@greeneyes7912 that line reefers to The Flying Machine, a band James Taylor was in that broke up without ever putting out an album. In an interview, he said "Suzanne" was a girl he knew named Suzie who committed suicide, and the "they" in the lyric "the plans *they* made put an end to you" refers to the proverbial "they," like in "fate," not a person.

This is the song helped me get over the death of our dog this past year, for 40 years of my life this song has always taken on a variety of meanings in my life going back to my early childhood when I first remember hearing it on the radio in the late 70's. Life has it's ups and downs, it's how we weather the storms in life that matters the most. That's my takeaway from this song.

My brother played this on the piano while singing it at my 14 yr old nephew's funeral. He sounds a lot like James Taylor and plays the piano really well too. That was 30 yrs ago in August, 1992. Tonight I went to see James Taylor in concert in my hometown in Canada along with my brother and two nephews, one born shortly before my first nephew passed, the other 3 years later. It was an amazing concert. Hearing this song sung by James Taylor and being with my nephews was an event I'll never forget. They will always be a gift. In fact - one of them is named Matthew, which we later learned means 'Gift from God'.

Always loved this song. Nothing in life has ever worked out the way i wanted it to. After a 17 yr marriage coming to an end 10 yrs ago i had both mixed anger and depression. I am now 58 and alone but when i was 24 yrs old i asked Jesus in my life 12-26-83. I like the part where JT says 🎼"wont you look down upon me Jesus, you got to help me make a stand" it hits home because Jesus has been with me all along and i am still standing. Thank you JT for all the awesome and beautifull music you have made and still make. Let us all🎼shower the people we love with love!🎼

Just yesterday morning, they let me know you were gone. Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you. I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song, I just can’t remember who to send it to. I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain. I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, but I always thought that I’d see you again. Won’t you look down upon me, Jesus, You’ve got to help me make a stand. You’ve just got to see me through another day. My body’s aching and my time is at hand and I won’t make it any other way. Oh, I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain. I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, but I always thought that I’d see you again. Been walking my mind to an easy time, my back turned towards the sun. Lord knows when the cold wind blows it’ll turn your head around. Well, there’s hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things to come. Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground. Oh, I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain. I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, but I always thought that I’d see you baby, one more time again, now. When I see James Taylor in concert, I remember how profoundly this man has suffered (addiction and depression) and how perhaps that was the price he paid for his amazing musical ability... we all benefit without paying the price he did.

James Taylor's music has been a big part of my life for 45 years. My husband sang this song at our senior high class night st 18 years old. The two of us later sang together across the U. S. Including covers of so many of James' songs. His songs compare to none.

I felt like crazy listening to.this song again and again and again today and it helped. A few days ago my good friend flew all the way from LA just to spend some time with me here in my country. He had depression and we were both hoping that a trip to a foreign land and some nice beaches could help. He was struggling and I can see pain and sadness in him. He wasn't the happy person I used to know. I did all I can to convince him to seek help and he promised that he would. Two days before his flight back to the States he told me that he can't fight it anymore. I was worried and didn't stop sending him messages on Viber while he's on his way back to LA. My last messages were unseen and unanswered. He ended up killing himself as soon as he arrived home. I still don't want to know how he did it. I guess its pointless to know and I'm not ready. I felt like I failed him and I could have done more. I was the only person he's comfortable of talking. I didn't know that was our last. Rest in peace David. My best friend and soulmate :-(

I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what it must be like to go through something like this . Don't put the blame on yourself. You did the best that you could & it was all up to your friend to seek treatment. RIP David .

I can't pretend to know what you feel, but I know what it feels like to lose someone you love. Feeling guilty is normal, considering the situation, but it will start to bother you daily. I might not know David, but I know that he wouldn't want you to blame yourself. He would want you to learn from him, help others who has been in the same situation, and live your life to the fullest until you see him again someday. You've done your best. You have to know that. Sometimes you don't have to understand. Sometimes you just have to let go. Accept it, forgive him, forgive the situation, forgive yourself, and let go. You might not get there now, but I hope you'll get there someday. I know thats what David would want :)

The decision of about how to, or when it is the right time to forgive and finally set down the heavy burden can only really be made by the individual carrying the heavy burden. What happened had nothing to do with you. And, I totally get that from your perspective it has everything to do with you. I don't mean to discount your feelings at all. If I were experiencing this from your point of view, I can imagine that I would equally as aligned with your, "This has everything to do with me" feelings or trains of thought.

MUSC is blessing from our God.. It soothes the soul, the mind, the heart, the body, the soul and the spirit. Music can change your mood, from sorrow to joy. From losing someone, to bringing back their memory of them, in the music. Music can be used to begin and introduce a President, a pope, a King, a Queen. Music is in the Kngdom, and will be done, while we are praising our GOD our Lord Jesus. Enjoy the blessing of music, the blessing of youtube Thank you James for sharing your blessing of music

This song reminds me of coming home from boarding school only to subsequently learn that my cousin 'Pocohie", Harold Arnold Doman was killed in the VN war and my cousin Raymond was incarcerated. My dream was to come home and to be together as a happy family as we once were. Hearing this song brings tears to my eyes.

I agree with Louis Van gaal... definite contrast between 1970 and this. The former was, to me, more vulnerable, and understandably hurt/stunned. This version, to me, is much more reflective. Still, an wonderful, moving song from an OUTSTANDING troubadour.
