I've only had the pleasure of seeing James live once - at an outside concert in Connecticut, back in the late 80s. My boyfriend at the time was with me, and he was a jazz piano student at the university we went to. At that time he had very little respect for music outside of his beloved jazz, so he didn't really know JT. But when he heard him live, he was blown away. James Taylor is one of the best musicians in American history. A lyricist, and song writer; the way he engages with the music, the band, and the audience; the way he improvises, and the fun and humor he brings to performances. His comfortable guitar playing, the stellar musicians he surrounds himself with; his humility and talent side by side; the singability of his songs, the way he brings an audience together. I'm 53 years old, but I still wanna be James Taylor when I grow up.
