Really basic vid but good as far as it goes. The keys to Solar Fire ignition are size and tinder. The larger the lens or reflector, the more photons. More photons allow us to use less optimal tinders and still achieve success. Grass is great for tinder bundles yet so-so for catching photons. Dark colored solid materials are best. Charcoal and punkwood are perennial favorites. Rubbing charcoal or other dark materials on a lighter colored tinder can reduce the time until ignition by up to half. Because the number of photons is the single most important aspect of Solar Fire, a large but low magnification lens will outperform a small but high magnification lens. Of course the more size plus the more magnification, the better.

A credit card sized 3x or 5x fresnel lens is small, cheap, lightweight and versatile addition to our kits. The plastic sleeves they come in are abrasive and will degrade the lens over time. Shielding the lens with something softer or smoother will increase its longevity. With such a lens we need at least half value sunlight to achieve consistent success. (Half the intensity of the sun at noon on a clear day.) Solar Fire can be affected all year long. Tinders that are good coal extenders (hold and grow a coal with little assistance) are excellent candidates for Solar Fire. In addition to most woods, most shelf or bracket fungi work very well also. Many plant stems will work, as will some piths, leaves, ovum, etc. Any plant or fungi part can be charred and work with ferro or Solar Fire. Even green wood, green leaves, most fungi, etc.
