Glad the fire wasn’t worse. 15 years as a FF I can’t tell you how many woods/field fire I went on. You were smart to use the sand. Dirt/sand/rocks don’t burn. We had water packs for places where trucks & our ATV’s couldn’t go but we also had shovels & fire rakes. The BIGGEST difference to stopping fire spread is having a Fireline. (What you did). We would remove all vegetation & dig down to the soil. You should have 100 feet of defensible space. Especially you being so far away from resources. I would definitely say do your research. Trimming trees to a lower height, keeping vegetation away from your cabin. Keeping grass cut low. You have done all of this work to the cabin. It is an investment in your hard work, time, money & future. You definitely want to do your best to protect it & keep it safe. Not only inside but outside as well. Looking good….stay safe & hope you are feeling better.

For children I usually used 1/2 cup and used about 1/4 c for breakfast with something warm to drink. An adult could try one cup. It really doesn't matter, because it can't harm.

yeah its mostly the water that gets you going but raisins are concentrated fruit .. you ever count how many raisins are in a box its a huge bowl of grapes.. it helps too but water is the most important thing. that and going when you need to go and not holding it in... thats probably what happened to him on his trip.. not drinking enough and holding it in.

Usually, a low-fiber diet for bowel obstructions precludes all dried fruit (as well as berries and cherries). While raisins do have a mild TNF-alpha inhibiting effect (reducing gut inflammation), they are only really advised for prevention of bowel obstructions rather than cure.

@@chapman_7265 abc fire extinguishers cover everything including electrical fires (except class D). They even work on kitchen fires but make a bigger mess than class K extinguishers. best thing to do with electrical fires is turn off the power source first which is easier when you’re off grid like this.

Retail solar panels are monumentally more convenient, cheaper, and less effort for his current power situation. I doubt he'd need more than a battery and solar panels even when he's in the main cabin, given all his power tools (which will consume far more energy than any appliance he could install, given he's not going to be installing an HVAC system) are already almost entirely powered off a battery without a panel lmao. This isn't the 00s or whatever, solar panels are incredibly cheap, effective, consistent, reliable, and low maintenance, so I'm not sure why you'd go to all the effort of building and upkeeping water mill power unless your whole lifestyle aesthetic is steampunk or you're just a hydropower hobbyist (probably a very heavy concentration of both imo).

James, you are going to make a fantastic dad. You are a tribute to your upbringing. As we say in the South, your mama done raised you right. You may not have voiced your frustrations on camera but that fire! Super scary. But it brought memories of my father who always had a 55 gallon drum for burning trash. That could’ve been a real disaster. So glad the forestry service and your neighbor, were on patrol. It’s about time you drilled your own well. My brother is an engineer, he may have an invention to help. I won’t speak for him. Hopefully your gut issues resolved itself quickly. Do not apologize, your health and safety is more important than anything.

I do metal roofs professionally, and I gotta say you’re doing a great job for never having done it before! Solid 345 triangle haha. A few tips I can give you. You can screw the ridge cap to the metal roofing without wood backing, metal to metal is more than enough to hold it down. Also your gable flashing is installed upside down. Just an aesthetic thing. Make sure your bird blocking is vented! Hope you feel better soon, and again good job!

Retired wild-land firefighter here, EBAY has large CO2 extinguishers for $260, you might want to look at something like these.Big jugs of water arent good for computers etc the CO2 will put out the fire without doing too much damage. If you want the best get a HALOX or simlilar system, I install these in computer rooms so the electronics will not get destroyed. I also have pressurized water (the big silver ones) on hand at my cabin. When I had my cabin roof put on the installer (licenced contractor) didn't put steel mesh under the ridge cap and I had to deal with many bats. Of course he told me it was my problem.

Glad you're alright! If you want a fire extinguisher you'll probably be looking at a 20 pounder ABC at minimum - the small 5 or 10 pound apartment extinguishers don't have the staying power for even small controllable fires unless you're incredibly aggressive and are able to smother the fire source as well (with a fire blanket wink wink). Plus being without running water, a little extra in the can is never a bad thing - just don't forget to check it and upend it once a month to make sure it's still good! On the plus side you did a great job in keeping things contained, and now have a decent lesson in fire safety to take with you moving forward.

Hey James, So sorry for the lost of your tent and your belongings. Awesome job putting it out and, holy smokes, what an awesome attitude. I also wanted to say for a guy that started this journey with very little woodworking experience, you are are doing a great job. Also, I enjoy watching you learn as you go. Many of us on the other end of KZbin land learned the same way, and some are now master craftsmen. In reference to the venting you were talking about, many refer to them as soffit vents, soffits being the boards that close in the rafters. On cabins I have built I measure the spacing between the rafters and put a vent in the soffit every sixteen inches. HomeDepot carries two inch round vents that have screens in them and they work like a plug. Drill a hole and pop them in and you are done. Once you put your soffit on you are going to want to put an aluminum fascia over your fascia board. It has a 1 inch 90 degree bend on it that overlaps the front edge of your soffit and it gives it a nice finished look that will last for a long time. The tricky part on soffits are the ends where it gets boxed on the gable ends of the eves. Do some research on "How to build soffit bird boxes" and that should give you an idea on what you are up against. Enjoy the journey my friend.

You did learn a lot this week, Fire Safety really should be discussed further for New Off Grid Builders watching and learning from you. But well done, always looking forward to the new instalment!! Oh, Glad Sophie is safe, bit of a war wound in the corner of the frame but it will give you both something to tell your Wolfhound.

I have to admit, I probably watch too much KZbin, but out of all the youtubers I follow, your channel has been the most enjoyable consistently. So, OOGA BOOGA from Montreal! I hope Thor helps you and prevents any more fires!

Glade to see you are OK! Whole pitted prunes, not juice. Full of sugar. After my wife passed away I backed up for two weeks I went 2 time only. I work at a hospital. I ask a Doctor about it and he said prunes work for him. Half a bag of prune, two days late it let go. And it is all natural. My not work for everyone, but it did for my Doctor and me. Good luck.

Wooo, that gave me chills looking at that fire. I would've been super scared. I've only been in one fire, I was about 12 years old and it changed me forever. Now I always think of fire safety. It can be very life changing. You kept your cool and I applaud you for that. I feel like the helicopter was there to scope out your place from seeing the smoke. Thats what I would assume anyways. I hope that all your blockages clear out. Thanks for still keeping us updated with everything thats been happening to you. You have an incredible work ethic my friend! Keep up the great work. Until next saturday, ooga booga! ❤😅😂
