If you ask me; People that love Roy shouldn't have to defend themselves against the people that say he sucks just because he's bad in his own game and that his personality is very bland. If you love Roy, love Roy, if people don't like the fact you love Roy and feel the need to point out his flaws as a way to try and make you feel bad for loving him, ignore those types of people. I ain't saying Roy's flaws don't exist but what I am saying is just because he's flawed doesn't mean you can't love his character. Roy is our boy, he always will be, flaws or not.

Those are some wise words my friend. "If there's a character you like, like them for who they are, not for what other people think they are. Even if they have some flaws to them, the good more than not will outweigh the bad in you're eyes." This is a great philosophy to follow when regarding a FE character, especially if that character isn't too popular in their game like Roy. Roy's my favorite character in the franchise as a whole, and he does have major flaws in his game. But I never really let these flaws shake and rattle me too much, because he's done more good than bad for me. And I thank you for reminding me of this.

FE6 needs a remake. The problem is FE remakes tend to be on the "Keep things like the original with Better Graphics" often times being to the games detriment(stuff like shadow dragon not updating the plot and echoes not giving playable axes) ik we only had 3 so the list is not long enough but still it makes me weary. I would love it a good remake as much as anyone but i still think IS needs at least one more successful remake to win me over

They would have to add several new characters to the story to make the class relevant, and probably make the villagers able to become an axe fighter. In the end they would have to either write in several entirely new characters, or let the axe become entirely irrelevant like in so many other games and not accomplish much either way. All that just to let the axe be playable in a game without the weapon triangle? Why?

@@lazerboy4942 Yea because 3H certainly suffered with a lack of weapon triangle. Mercenaries are abundant in this game you could always give them access. General and even pallys(fe6 and 9,10) can also wield axes. All you would realistically have to do give some characters axe access. Seems pretty pointless to get a weapom type your player characters cant use whatsoever especially since its not for balance or plot relevant reasons. Axes have been a staple weapon for ages and removing them now just seems like taking two many steps back.

@@kingoflions827 How did Three Houses suffer because of no weapon triangle? Also, yes the game came out today, but I disagree with "It came out today, so it should have it". It's not them removing axes, it's keeping it the same because at the end of the day, it's a Gaiden remake. In Echoes, although it's been a long time since I played it so I might be wrong on this part, characters can't use multiple weapon types. So if they just gave characters access to axes, it WOULD be a balancing issue because now some characters can use multiple weapon types. This would be made even worse if they added back in the weapon triangle because then some characters would never have to be at a disadvantage within the triangle. The other option is wasting development time making brand new characters. Furthermore on the weapon triangle, I truly don't think it adds much to fire emblem to have it in the game. In a game without it, choosing which character should attack who is a much tougher decision, which is a good thing. With the weapon triangle, it's very clear of who should attack who because some characters are just better against some characters than others.

I think A remake should make certain changes to have the game stand on its own while keeping true to the original in some aspects and keeping somethings the same. In this case keeping Axes be enemy only was not one that should have been spells draining HP and Canon-pairings with altered character endings based on who lives or dies is. You feel that A remake should keep as true to its original as possible(At least thats my interpretation if im mistaken i apologize)and dont want changes in areas where they cam be avoided. Also The 3H comment was supposed to be sarcasm given you said Axes are meaningless in a game without a weapon triangle which I believe is not the case but thats not ended up interpreting it so i apologize for misleading you

Nice video Mangs, I really enjoy these long spotlights and I like changing of the music couple of times in the video to mix things up! I really think Binding Blade should get an official English remake for the reasons you mentioned in this video. Roy is a very popular Lord and I think his game would sell incredibly well and much better than SoV because of Roy fans, who know him from Smash. Alm or Celica didn't have the luxury of being popular characters outside of the FE Community which Roy still is and has been for decades since Melee. So a game with Roy could help bring newer fans into the franchise similar to how they put a Lord from a new FE game in Smash but in this case, people have used him in Smash for years and developed an affinity for him. Roy with Voice acting would hopefully be able to convey his character better.

I think what you said about Roy becoming the true hero of the story at the end of the story is completely true and is backed up by the lesser known subtitles of the main map themes of fe6. -The first map theme 'beyond the sky' is subtitled 'Roy's journey' -The second map theme is subtitled 'Roy's battle' -The third map theme is subtitled 'Roy's expedition' -The fourth map theme is subtitled 'Roy's courage' -The fifth is subtitled 'Roy's challenge' Roy's courage is played first at the massive battle vs murdock, coincidentally the same map on which he promotes. Roy went through this journey and finally he's found his courage and his place as a commander, Murdock titles him 'a worthy commander' and someone he wants to fight in hand to hand comabt, this truly shows how Roy has ascended to a worthy general, one worthy of his subjects and his father. All this one the chapter that first plays 'Roy's courage'. Truly symbolic isn't it?

Fun fact: According to the Making Of book, Roy was supposed to become King of the Western Isles at the end of that arc. WHY. DIDN'T. THEY. DO. THIS! It would've solved SO many of Roy's issues! One, it would've given him a decent character arc (look what suddenly being thrust into a powerful leadership position did for Ike), two, it would've been the PERFECT excuse for an earlier promotion, which would've solved one of his biggest gameplay problems. I agree that the very bad initial translation patch might be responsible for most of FE6's characters being labelled as "bland", and I was hoping I'd come out of the Supports section of this video liking Roy more. ...It actually made me like him less. Most of his supports are really generic and boring, with only one or two individual conversations standing out, and I don't think any amount of better translating could save them. One thing it did make me notice though: FE6 sure had a lot of 4th-wall-breaking supports. From Roy/Allen and Roy/Cecilia to Dyan/Yodel talking about Affinities. This was the first FE with supports so they were still finding their feet, but I think I'm starting to realize why I hate FE6's supports so much: the seem to focus more on lampshading gameplay mechanics than on developing characters. The main issue I have with Roy as a character is wasted potential. Some of his core ideas are excellent concepts (what other FE Lord struggles with depression over leading an army?), but none of them are expanded on. There's one story Roy moment I really love, where he surprises Elphin by working out that he's a prince just through basic logic. But those moments are few. Gameplay-wise, blah blah blah late promotion blah. Nothing more to say. I've been realizing lately how similar Roy and PoR Ike are, but at least Ike promotes MUCH earlier, has supports that don't take a billion years to build, and has some great skill options. Both start out bad only to become 1-2 range monsters in the endgame, but Ike at least has a decent midgame. And wow, 27 chapters of being forced to use crappy 5-move Roy, made even worse by every chapter being Seize. Roy's still my least favourite Lord. Corrin is worse from a story standpoint, but Roy being bad in both story and gameplay is a deal-breaker for me. I really hope a potential remake saves him.

I love this video. I've liked Roy since I saw him in Melee and when I heard that others disliked Roy for his personality, I was confused. I saw him similar to Marth as depicted in Shadow Dragon, unsure of himself and wanting to save everyone and refuses to accept that he can't. I see in this I wasn't entirely correct. While Marth was roughly 17 when he took up his role as leader of an army and the Prince of Altea, Roy is 15 and has yet to comprehend his role. Only when he takes up the Binding Blade is that he finally comprehends it and fully accepts his role. Marth had the time to realize his role that Roy has none of. This makes a difference. Utility wise he is poor but remember, he's 15 and probably hasn't had that training Marth and Ike had. And his closest friends, Wolt and Lilina, don't use weapons that they can spar against him with as he uses swords. Eliwood had Hector, an axe user, which helped him out in that department. I think Roy's late promotion is due to him not wanting his role as he feels that he's not fit for it. Once he realized that he can lead and takes up the Binding Blade, he promotes. Roy isn't the best but he's far from the worst(A certain blue haired Vanguard as he appears in Radiant Dawn takes that spot for his lack of personality alone). For me, Roy gets 4 stars out of 5. He good as is but could use the FE Echoes treatment like Alm and Celica got to help flesh him out and make who he really is known. That being said, great video. I enjoyed it. Truly, Roy's our boy.

As far as gameplay is concerned, I look at Roy as if he were the King in chess. In chess the whole point of the game is to protect your king. The same is true for Roy over a majority of the game. Furthermore, the King gets some usage in the lategame by many players, just like how Roy becomes a servicable unit in the lategame himself. The parallels really show. Less movement, liabilities for most of the game, and servicable later on.

I think the reason Leif is more mature than Roy despite being the same age,is because of how much of a harsh childhood he had. Sure. *Unpopular opinion incoming:* I enjoy Roy for the most part because of how he sees himself in a realistic light. Of course, he is the noble leader of a grand army, but in reality, he is still a growing boy who has been suddenly thrust into this situation. He is doing nothing but his best, even when being compared to his father at times. Heck, his stats showcase that, they're just tampered with horribly. And before I get comments saying, "oh but Ike has no nobility and denied being royalty etcetera etcetera...." it should be known that Ike is almost no different than Roy. There were times when Ike was also compared to his father whilst leading the Greil Mercenaries, and even allowed some of these comparisons to be placed in his head. That being said, Ike is *also* a growing boy, as he was *also* thrust into position so suddenly. His deny to being of royalty not only showed that he grew up, but that he could entitle his heart to a family beyond blood. I see Roy as no different, simply because he entitled his entire cause, body, mind, and soul to fighting on the behalf of humanity itself, despite the chance that he might've never lived up to Eliwood. All in all, Roy is great character-wise. I feel as if 75% of the Roy haters only dislike him because of how he plays in his own game.

Yeah, I see Roy and Ike as very similar character wise. They also meet up with the princess very early on and have a similar relationship with them. They are put into leadership because something bad happens to their father early on. Despite being of such low class, they both command a coalition army who they normally wouldn't be allowed to command. Both are very idealistic and have a strong sense of justice and go against their morally grey advisor. Both are very inexperienced in leadership at the beginning but become capable leaders in a short period of time. Both have a pretty bland and unemotional way of reacting to events in the story. So I find it odd there are plenty of Roy fans who dislike Ike and Ike fans who dislike Roy.

Roy ranked 2nd in the first Choose Your Legends, making him one of the most popular Lords in the series (probably because of Smash memes, but hey, he's our boy.) Roy is one of my favorites if not THE character of the entire FE series. I sometimes wonder if this particular character is more appealing to Japanese and other Asian players instead of American. Personally I like him so much simple because I felt like this character is me while playing FE6: trying to make sure that every blue unit survives without any death; a teen (when I first played this game I was about the same age as Roy) who has no noteworthy characteristics has to face all the sudden changes and challenges of life that he was not prepared for; and very often when comparing with people around felt nothing but falling behind; etc.

It's so cool that they had the balls to make Roy just a boy, with the skills of such and the personality of such. He's like if Cyril was a main character. I never said he wasn't I'm thinking of being a dragon as a gene that has incomplete dominance thus meaning if you inherit it but have a human parent you age like sophia which is slow but less slow than Fae. which i guess is what Ninian is. Think like this DD is pure dragon. Dd is half dragon. dd is human. If you breed Dd with dd there is a 50% chance he'll be a half dragon and a 50% chance to be a human.

The character that won 52nd in the first Choose your legends was Masked Marth. The character that won 88th in the second Choose your legends was Faye. Roy won 5th overall in the first Choose your legends (second highest male, earning him the brave variant) and was not able to be voted for on the second Choose your legends poll because he won before.

I'll admit, I was half expecting to see a roasting video of Roy. But I'm really please at seeing how this video was handled. I have heard plenty of things about Roy, both as a unit and a character, and found myself falling into what could be called an apologist corner. Sadly my only exposure to Roy was through Super Smash Bros., and I don't think I will be able to easily acquire Binding Blade to get first hand experience. Having watched this, I feel more informed about the gripes people have with Roy... perhaps if more options were available to him in-game and/or if his character arc was fleshed out, perhaps he could have been so much better than he is... yet the Roy we have now is... well... average. But all that said, I'm okay with that. I can recognize the flaws he has, the environment which he is in, and all other factors, and yet still like him. I'm not really objective, so I can still give character the benefit of a doubt.

Imagine a remake combo of both 6 and 7 in one game that takes Geneology as inspiration: you start by playing through Eliwood Hector and Lyn's story, pairing units off and whatnot, then you start Roy's story, with any children units inheriting from the parents you gave them, some having different backstories depending on their parents. And because Echoes started the precedent of adding characters for the sake of fleshing out the story, they can include not only Lyn, but give her a canonical child (perhaps a new recruited unit?) in the story. Could you imagine how amazing such a remake could actually be? It would easily be one of the best Fire Emblems ever made.

I do not understand why people think the FE6 Rapier is better than FE7's Rapier, when the FE7 version is in fact either significantly better or equal to the FE6 version in 99% of cases. FE6 Rapier has 5 Mt and increases by x3 against effective targets.FE7 Rapier has 7 Mt and increases by x2 against effective targets.Note that the weapon triangle bonus/penalty is on the base Mt, not the end result, so it gets multiplied as well.This means that against a Knight or Lance Cav, they both have an effective 12 Mt.Against a Sword Cav, FE6R has 15 Mt and FE7R has 14 Mt.Against *literally anything else in the game* the FE7R simply has +2 Mt over the FE6R, and in addition the FE7R has 45 durability over the FE6R's 25 durability, meaning it seems almost twice as many uses before breaking and forcing the wielder into using a normal weapon. This means that the FE6R is only better against Sword Cavs by 1 Mt, which are not very common; they are equal to each other against Knights and Lance Cavs; and the FE7R is better against literally everything else by 2 Mt. In nearly all situations, FE7R is > or = the FE6R, and it also has almost twice the durability making it usable for more maps and encounters than its 6 counterpart. Stop saying the tripled Mt of the FE6R makes it better than FE7R just because of that tripled Mt when the base is lower and thus makes the 6 version equal or worse in almost all encounters. FE6R is just an Iron Sword with +10Crit against most enemies, while FE7R is an Iron Sword but with +10Crit and also +2Mt against them, making it significantly better, and enabling Eliwood to KO enemies more effectively in the early game as it increases his power by 2 points. This is not always enough to make him kill, but it sure helps.

Correction Mangs, you get a Light Brand in chapter 8, but it's only purchasable in chapter 23. It's actually pretty handy since it always does 10 damage at 2 range, meaning it can give swordlock units a solid damage options versus Hard Mode armors and wyverns where they'll commonly do single digit damage at 1 range. But yeah, it's not like you can use it extensively with its availability and 25 uses, as well as flat damage.
