I LOVE that this is catering to all skill levels and interests - I'm someone who loves trains and railroading, but in a "choochoo is cool" kinda way where I''m more into the operations side and am deeply intimidated by realistic firing etc (it's what's kept me away from Derail Valley tbh). Having the option to just run the trains, have an AI crew member help you, or do it all yourself (and having that realism setting for everything else like you've said, braking etc) is really cool to me; I'm waaaay more likely to actually try learning to fire and run realistically if I can start in full arcade mode and work up to it :)) Sorry for the long-winded comment, this is just proving to me that CoS is the railroad game I've been waiting for for YEARS
@_Studio3464 ай бұрын
Do not apologize for the long-winded comment! We appreciate you.

I think that's a fantastic point - that letting people get more familiar with a simpler option, and work up to all the complexity, it can in the end teach those people about all this to where they're confident in it.
@WingsStrings4 ай бұрын
I would definitely encourage giving realistic firing and/or running a try one day, even if you have to work up to it. One of our goals is that we want to educate folks and fuel their interest in how these things work to always help expand their knowledge, and that includes providing all the info you'd need for the full sim. We'd rather lift everyone up and give all the steps people need to get there and make the experience as fun as we can than push them down and insist it's too hard or too complicated.

Really cool to see the complexities of manual coal (or other solid fuel) firing. My background is in Marine and Power Engineering, so mostly oil firing, but in Power Engineering, we did deal with solid fuels, just with a lot more automation. Stokers in modern boilers handle most of the complex stuff automatically, with nudges from the operator here and there. I'm looking forward to learning old school coal in the hole tech.

I remember when this was first announced around half a year ago when listening to mark, one of the devs talk about this game, he mentioned the "real aspect" of running steam locomotives and how they didn't want to make the "optional hardcore mode" too painfully realistic. After hearing this anecdote I tempered my expectations a lot because I know simulating the ins and outs of these things is a really hefty feat too pull off in terms of making the software for it. I don't know whether or not that "not too painfully realistic" notion was somewhat thrown out the window at some point, because seeing this and looking at the COS discord, and what some of the plans are for the *airbrakes* alone? Make me so so incredibly happy that these guys are as insane as me when it comes to these things. So beyond thrilled that there are people out there that WANT a steam locomotive simulator to be on the same level as DCS is for flight sims. I can guarantee you that you'll not only probably end up making a big profit from this game, but you'll also change the way these machines are presented in Games/Media forever.

Tiny detail I enjoyed: 26:02 when you put the tender brake on, you can see the effect of the coupling stretching out between tender and loco. ❤

So what I'm hearing from all this, about IRL fireman being able to not have to use the UI, is that this game is becoming the Kerbal space program of steam engine simulators. And that you could use this game to train (train lol) for the real job. Am I crazy? Maybe. Is Mark crazy? Maybe. Do I really want to play this game? Absofuckinglutely!

Mark is, in fact, crazy. :D

From my extremely limited experience (I got some cab rides where I could shovel coal and operate the injector when told to do it) in trying to throw coal in the hole, there is one thing that a computer game will not teach you - that is being able to throw the coal hard enough for it to reach the far end of the firebox and in general being able to hit a particular spot. Also, at least on the locomotives that I got my cab rides on, when the regulator is open, the flames are so bright and tall that, that least for me, it was not possible to see the far end of the firebox. By the way, keeping my hand close to the open firebox (while trying to aim the shovel) hurts.
@briannem.67874 ай бұрын
@@Pentium100MHz to be fair, I think it'd be hard to emulate that without having some button-mash quick-time-event like out of a fighting game? probably wouldn't suit the genre and could actually take away from immersion
@Pentium100MHz4 ай бұрын
@@briannem.6787 I completely agree. I just wanted to point out that not everything can be emulated in a game. Just like shooting a gun in real life is much different than in a game. I am also sure that real firemen very quickly learn how to throw the coal where they want to and figuring out where you need to add coal is the harder task. Similar in that moving the regulator requires force and it is not that easy to move it a little bit, but in a game like Derail Valley it is easy to just move it one notch. Again, I am sure by the time someone becomes a train driver he learns how to operate the controls properly. My perspective is as a complete noob. It looks like the game has the injectors right - move the handle a little bit to start it and then move it further to run it. If you do it too soon, you get steam coming out where it's not supposed to and doing it wrong multiple times in a row results in the fireman yelling at you.

“Light and bright” well that’s certainly what the guys down on the perbeck line (swanage railway) do, but on the miniature locomotives my dad owns the key for firing them is to fill them up until the coal is falling out the door, but the merchant (35006 P&O, merchant navy class) will just consume the coal as quick as you shovel it in, so it got a coal chute added, fill up the chute, open the door, shovel some more, close the door, fill up the chute ready for next time, but, at Oxford I was able to fire the Britannia for 2 and a half hours continuously with a VERY small amount of coal, like, if you put your two hands together and fill up your hands with the coal, about that much, dad said “when you run out of coal we have to go home” so i, with barely any knowledge of firing, kept it going for 2 and a half hours

Qualified Locomotive firemen here, I'm not surprised that most sims don't tackle it properly the complexity of what's actually happening in a firebox (firebed behavour, combustion, brick arch, draft, quality of fuel, effect of water on temperature to just name a few things) makes it incredibly difficult to actually simulate properly. kudos for giving it a crack no one else has done yet. bonus points if you can make the view of the firebed through the firehole door thats part of the skill :)

I love the distinction for what tools/features you have available in mutiplayer vs singleplayer, but I think it would be worth it to allow this to be a setting no matter the mode. I can only speculate as to what your projected reasonable server populations might be, but if you have two people and two trains to run, allowing the server owner to dial back the difficulty to be equivalent to singleplayer doesn't seem unreasonable to me. Just my two cents--more settings is always better!

With the amount of realism you've shown to be present, I could see this game being used for training people on running actual steam locomotives. Thatd be great because I've not been able to find much documentation on running steam trains, and have been hoping to learn sometime. Will the game itself have tutorials on stuff like proper fuel and water usage, along with explanations of what things like dynamos do for the oblivious people such as myself who want to operate trains realistically but have no idea how?
