Not sure why they do that. I think some efficiency expert came up with that idea. When I was riding (late 70's) our station chief would regularly drill us on streets and where the plugs were. Even though I was a volly, I had to do the same drills the paid guys had to. As such, on calls, we were expected to know where the streets and plugs were. One night we were headed to a fire in which the first in engine was already there, so we knew we had a fire. We got to the place where we were supposed to turn and the chauffeur kept going. Captain ask him if he was alright and he said yes. Captain explained he missed the turn about 3 blocks back. He turned around and went back. Hey, it was 3 in the morning, not like we had to battle rush hour traffic. We layed 2 2 1/2's and I bailed from my jump seat to help prepare the plug. Used car dealer and someone was late and tried to burn the evidence.

Wow! So just by watching a 10 minute video and not knowing all the circumstances involved before during and after you can make that statement. I claim no expertise in fire science but I do take into account that I don't know and can't see everything going on at the scene. And if it is soo easy to do this work why aren't you out there showing all of us how much better you can perform these duties. When all you can do is criticize then perhaps you should refrain from watching these particular types of videos. Snap judgements and unfair assessments are hardly warranted or necessary or even welcome for that matter. Until you can prove you are better and more knowledgeable on the subject from sources other than these videos probably best not to share any opinions lest you make yourself a fool.

Looking at various videos of fires all over the world since a few years now: Every nation has its own pros and cons - just the US firefighters have a speciality - whenever they have to set up against a fire incident, they do it like they have every time they need and like that fire is way bigger than it looks. And so they come with various trucks, lay out those hoses, do some adjustments here and there, try if there is water, put it out again and try another hose and half a hour later or so they have everything ready to put out that big fire it has become finally. Just kidding. Cheers to all firemen all over the world: everyone is glad you do your job! Thanks for your service!

Not a firefighter, but nobody else has answered this, so I'll contribute what I do know. Early in the video, you can hear them say that they're rescuing people out the back, meaning that there are still FFs and civilians inside. One common rule of firefighting is not to spray from the outside while there are FFs working inside. The water stream can knock down and disorient FFs inside, it can bring debris down on them and it can create clouds of superhot steam. Also, the FFs inside presumably have a number of hoselines with them, so it's not like there's no water being used. They use interior OR exterior water, not both together. Again, not a firefighter, but that's my two cents.

Why doesn't Newark key the hydrant with supply line and then drive up to the fire?? How come your Engines do not use their deck guns sooner to knockdown a lot of fire and slow the extension. (3:25 your tape time) Though they could have been shut down after a few minutes. Once you turned the corner, Don't see the access to the apartments over the Market. Don't see any lines there either. That is the most severe exposure and the most severely exposed due to wind. OK at 8 :30 they are going into the exposure. Looked like a tough job. Once again the reduction in manpower is all too clear.

Why did it take so long for them to put water on the fire ?,
@luicalibre6665
@luicalibre6665 7 ай бұрын
1. The first engine has to make room for the other apparatus approaching and an LDH supply line blocks there entry. 2. Usually the next engine hits the hydrants then stretches to the first engine or the first due ladder. 3. Using a deck gun from a truck that usually has @ 500 gals of water would drain the tank in 1-1.5 minutes. Yes, the deck gun is under-utilized but a water source must be secured first to feed that thirsty beast.

@@luicalibre6665 I don't agree with #3. With that much fire you have to hit it quick to stop or slow the extension. Look what happened by waiting. (We don't know how long units were there before Jeff started filming.) As to #1 Why not key hydrant with supply line, 1FF stays there to hookup to hydrant, and rig drives on to fire?? Then you have good position and water. Meanwhile the other FF can start to stretch a line or operate Deck gun.

Today, Boston fire department responded to a fire where two 3 decker occupied buildings were fully involved in the rear or the C side of the buildings. Within one minute, the battalion chief ordered a third alarm. Trapped residents were successfully evacuated in just over three minutes. The fire was reported to be knocked down in just about 25 minutes where overhauling operations commenced. The all out was sounded in a little over an hour while companies were making up. This is Boston fire department and why it has such a great reputation. I know the way it fights fires with over 30 years in observing them personally. From what I observed in this video, Newark FD needs to be restaffed with qualified chiefs and undergo retraining of its officers and members. This was a very poor performance of leadership and so-called professional firefighting.

Good camera angle at the first half minute: we see the effect of flammable material on the outside of the house to the right (exposure 4, I guess), probably some sort of plastic used as waterproof cover. What does this remind us of? Yes, the Grenfell Tower disaster in London some 4 years ago: styrofoam on the outside of the highrise had caught fire, causing the whole structure to burn like a torch. Fire seems to have started in that barbecue restaurant in the middle. Forgotten to turn off that deep fryer, probably!

It took 3:30 minutes to get the first deck gun fired up from the beginning of this video. That doesn’t actually tell us how long from when the engine first arrived on scene which not shown in this video. On the other hand, in a similar fire in Boston it took 1.15 minutes from when Engine 56 first arrived on scene for the pump operator to get water onto the fire with his deck gun. Excellent teamwork. He uses tank water first while other members set up hydrant and keeps the water flowing without interruption. Record timing. Kudos BFD. This is common with Boston Fire. I’ve witnessed it dozens of times. 👎Newark Fire Department needs a replacement of this battalion chief or deputy chief and retraining of its firefighters. Absolutely no excuse for such a delay in getting water onto the fire. This is not a volunteer department located in the boonies that rely on tank water supplied by trucks. I’ve even seen such departments get water faster on a fire utilizing the engine’s tank water.

I don't know if it is just me, or whether there is an underlying reason not known to me, but in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany etc water is pumped a lot sooner on to the fire than in the US. In the UK a small line or two are put into action immediately on arrival whilst the main lines are setup. There also doesn't seem to be the urgency to fight the fire. If you YT several fire fighting videos from Netherlands, you will see what I mean. Does anyone have any insight into this?

WOW. Ever heard of the deck gun, boys? Armchair quarterback I know, but WAY too long using that deck gun. Empty your tank if you need to before positive water. It will buy you time even if the fire doesn’t go out.

@andyoxleyonhistravels
@andyoxleyonhistravels 7 ай бұрын
Well they did take forever to get some water on the exposures which just help the fire spread much further than it needed. If you are struggling to get your water supply up and running then instead of having a couple of guys going up on the roof doing nothing then get them to assist with getting water sorted .Its about making best use of your resources at the time. Sometimes you just have to do things a bit different instead of saying that its not their job to do this or that. I am sure the interior crews were working hard but there was loads of exterior firefighting that should have been dealt with much quicker had the resources been better used. On wooden buildings like these it is more important to get you water sorted as the speed of fire spread can be fast.

@Cruzing_ I'm sure they had interior lines working pretty quick but there is some poor use of resources and the exterior 3 storey building is left unchecked far too long which if you watch part 2 of this fire Is the reason they lose a large chunk of that building. Not bashing anyone just pointing out something that could be learned from for future reference.
