If I may, try holding the chert in your left hand and striker in your right hand. Place some char clothe on top of the chert and hold it with your thumb. Strike the chert and sparks will be land on the char clothe. It might take a few strikes. Anything I can do to help please let me know. Placing your char clothe on the ground could be bad if the ground is damp or just soaking wet. If your char clothe gets damp just set it in the sun to dry or recook it for few seconds in your tin. Look up my name and search Flint and steel fire in 5.8 seconds With practice it will get easier GOD Bless you and your family

Thanks for the tip. I have heard this from several others. I have since used the method you speak of. It is definitely a better way. For me at least.

You shouldn't be using it like a ferro rod, with the steel pressed to the ground. You want to hold the steel in your fist like a pair of brass knuckles and hold the flint (or in your case it looks like chert) in your other hand pinched between thumb and forefinger (closed fist to protect your fingers) and strike the stone as if you were trying to smack your knuckles (protected by the steel) along the edge. The angle the sparks fly depend on the angle you hit, so practice a few times in a dim room (to more easily see the sparks) and then place your charcloth/tinder fluff either on top or below the flint in your hand (depending on how your sparks are moving). This will really speed up you fire making.
