One of the reasons for extension cable is to distance the firestick from the back of the tv in order to allow it to run cooler. Items plugged straight into the tv tend to heat up and become hot. The cooler you keep electronic devices the better they run. I grafted a mini fan onto to my F/S and it keeps it well cool

hello just as an aside note from one reviewer to another you talked about connecting it to your tv USB port and indeed that's what I did before using the stick all the time however now that I'm using the fire stick for DirecTV now and it's in constant use I noticed that the device is underpowered on the TV usb (my cell phone doesn't even recognize the USB on my tv as a charging port it connects for a second then disconnects), I recommend a fast charger of at least 2 amps to provide sufficient power to the stick and plugging a low powered fan to the TV pointing at the stick to keep it from overheating cause I've also experienced that as well.

Can you please test PlayStation Vue with the new stick? I know the older one was way too slow to handle the guide and animations.

good suggestion! The original fire stick was really slooooow with Ps Vue. Also the new Fire tv stick supports 60fps at 1080p and 720p, so sports should look a lot smoother on it compared to the original.

i have 3 gen 1 sticks , 2 are rooted with kingo root but i still have not used root for anything useful if i upgrade i lose root, but the only thing i want to do with root i'm not even sure is possible i want to install xposed framework and install youtube adaway ,and install the youtube app so i can stream youtube video from my phone to my TV without ads ,do you know if that is possible? what would i need to do? install google play store and services 1st and then install the youtube app from there i guess the youtube app on the fire stick 1 is not really an app it is just a sort of hyperlink to the youtube web site this also is a drawback because the phone will not show the fire stick as a streaming device you can stream to t but you have to do it manually and enter a pin ,i want to be able to cast to it like i do my chromecast only no ads the other thing i am wondering about he new stick is if i have just the new stick and a HUE system(old bridge the round one) can i use the voice remote and alexa to control my HUE lights? or would i need a new bridge,or would i need a new bridge and an echo?

It's horrible. Super laggy and I counted about 26 seconds from launch to when I was able to do anything / watch TV. I purchased one specifically for VUE and I'm gonna have to send it back and go back to ROKU stick with it's horrible UI. Oooofff....

His 'pet peeve' is a bad argument. Having a solid/straight HDMI device plugged directly into the television and hidden is a great option. Changing the design and being forced to have a hanging HDMI cable is a horrible idea. I currently use the HDMI adapter on one of my TVs and it makes it much easier to swap devices when needed.

Cables tend to develop shorts in them over time or someone may damage it through regular wear and tear while traveling. so if you had a cable attached to it that couldnt be removed, you'd have to buy a whole new device instead of just the cable/extender. I dont know if chromecast users ever had that issue but I wouldnt like it being just one piece for that reason...also I think the chromecast has one of those flat cables that dont wear out as bad

I have the Fire stick 2 and as you mentioned here, there is an HDMI dongle that comes with the firestick. Now when I opened my box and removed the contents, there was no HDMI dongle, they chose to give me what is called a HDMI adapter extender. All it is, is a small box with two female ports on each side of the box. I have to admit in criticism, the makers of the firestick really give you no information on how to connect the firestick with the aforementioned adapter/extender. Actually I think they really need to include set up instructions for connecting the firestick that is more in depth. Supposedly, your supposed to use the adapter/extender to bring the stick farther away from the TV for better reception with your wi/fi signal. In all honesty they should re-think the connectivity with the stick to the TV. Sorry! for the lengthy message!

sundi712 problem I found is there wasn't enough ventilation when plugged straight into hdmi port. Got super hot

I agree with sundi. sometimes you want a sold straight HDMI cable like if you have a normal stand tv but if you have a tv mounted to a wall you want the flexible cable. adding the cable as an addition is better than having it built in. also, cables do have to tend to have a shorter life span vs the HDMI being built in.

i think you spent a little too much time with your pet peeve. the thing comes with the cable extender thingy. some people can use it plugged straight in (like I do), and others that can't, they do not need to purchase another adapter. This thing probably adds 50 cents to the BOM, no big deal.

I know this is an old question but here's the answer. You only need a free Amazon account with this device. You do not need to pay any monthly or yearly fees unless you want to have extra services offered by Amazon. There are, of course, apps associated with Amazon and others that are not. Lots of different choices and some cost a monthly fee like Netflix but some don't like Pluto. Just a couple of examples out of thousands of choices.

the difference is small but appreciated. apps respond quicker and it may be a little too early to say but I'd say it has less buffering for live streams
