Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

Theo and Bea. I very rarely comment on any You Tube video I watch, 99% of the time I just watch, learn a few things, disagree a few times ( mostly the Leeds united vloggers I watch ) and mostly enjoy all the free content You Tube as to offer. I wasn’t going to comment on this video, not that I wasn’t feeling sympathetic as you toured your fire and flood damaged property, but I didn’t feel the need to comment. But then right at the end you spoke about Bea and despite not watching every video you have ever put out on You Tube ( I have watched quite a few though ) I’ve always liked Bea’s zest for life, her beautiful smile, her kind caring nature and mostly her undoubted love for you and the lifestyle you live. Thank you Theo for taking the time to share what is a very raw & emotional experience. Allowing a year to pass which is what Native Americans always believe wait for the four seasons to show you the way nature will reshape the landscape. I live in the mountains of southern Spain which are also prone to forest fires & have difficult access. The small Bobcat diggers are brilliant as they are so manoeuvrable. So much water is held in tree root systems so some of those you think are lost may be saved. If you have a forestry school that you can contact & your local forestry dept they can do a survey for you. In the meantime my candle is lighting for you & Bea each day. Be sweet & kind to yourself & each other & baby steps will get you there. You are both awesome & much loved!!

Bushfires a way of life in Australia and I thoroughly agree with your decision to wait at least a year to determine what has survived the fires. Many of our forests and bush need fire to clear undergrowth and promote new growth. I think you will be pleasantly surprised how resilient Mother Nature is and that may of your trees will bounce back better than before. Keep looking forward never back!

My 17 yr old son has autism, and people will often say "he doesn't seem autistic", but they have no idea about the years of hard work we put in to what they see today. Almost everyone tends to cry when they see the devastation of a wildfire but you'll be surprised at how fast it comes back. In most cases the new vegetation grows more lush than before the fire. This is a common way that the earth renews itself & replenishes the soil. So you'll be fine, and next year you'll see a lot of new growth. And everyone is praying for Bea's recovery. I'm happy also that Bee is still with you and us. She is a kind soul and a beautiful loving person. Theo, you should be proud of yourself. Being autistic on any level is very hard to deal with on a regular basis, and you overcame a lot of obstacles. I believe having the flood, I know it caused a lot of damage, may have been a help to the burnt land. The trees and ground were so hot and may have been still burning in places but with the ash on the ground and then the water helped keep the ash in place and cool the land. We could still see some green leaves through the property. Waiting a year or so is very smart and it gives you time to clean up the debris and save some money. This property is still your dream place that you can call yours. Positive thoughts for Bee and for you. Love you both

Theo, we've never met but a big man hug from me. I lost the roof off my house in the UK in storm Eunice, earlier this year, and that was a big shock. It then turned out that the absentee freeholder on our shared property plot had not paid the buildings insurance - and so the negatives of these events come in unexpected waves. It costs money as well as in stress, but we get up and carry on. You actually sound a bit like me, seeing the positives, rather than dwelling on what has happened. In your case, you bought a lovely property, in reasonable condition, and then two catastrophes happened - the fire, followed by the torrential rain. On the plus side, you now have a blank canvas which someone like you is really good at repairing - and then developing, in your own style. The second plus is that the greenery of the land and many of the trees WILL grow back, and part of living in a fire risk area is that the land itself rebuilds afterwards. Nature hides seeds in the soil, which germinate as soon as rain and warmth comes. Get the animals back on this new site too, because they are now part of your family. The old stone building will also look wonderful again one day. The key thing here, is not to be too daunted by this project, and to ask for help when you need it. You also have this ongoing story for your youtube footage. At the same time, I hope you take time, privately, to let yourself get over this shock and the stress. And look after Bea first, and not us viewers. She's such a lovely woman and a treasure. I'd suggest moving into the new house ASAP, even if you light the place with candles at first. Or bring over the caravan, and park it outside, as a known step before you move on. You may need to believe in the project again, after this setback. You're also strong homesteaders, and so keep being the proud pioneers you are, on this wonderful Portugal journey. Best wishes, fro the south coast of the UK - where my roof is now back on, and waiting its first test from our winter gales.

It’s so hard for me to comprehend that people and teachers would have told you that you would amount to nothing. I’m 62 years old and in my eyes you are a MAN among men! You remind me of my grandfather who was born in Texas in 1896 and traveled as a child to Arizona in a covered wagon. There was nothing he couldn’t do. My heart goes out to you both as you struggle with your challenges. I can see the beauty that lies under all that black and I can’t wait to see what Mother Nature does with it come spring. It will be a time for rebirth not only for your property but for both your lives as well. Working with small bits at a time will not be so overwhelming and will be encouraging. A couple of hopefully helpful hints. 1. Kubota makes a digger attachment for their tractors. Google can help find one if you are curious. 2. “Crane repair Portugal” in Google may be a good idea if someone can come and tell you if your crane can be fixed with approximate costs. You may be able to fix it yourself but a crane repair person can tell you. 3. Now may be the time to get fire insurance if it is available, or if you don’t have it yet. I love you both so much and regret I am on the other side of the world in Vancouver. I would be there in a heartbeat, helping wherever I could. Lean on us all. We will give you strength.

What a fabulous property. It will take work and love to bring it back. Just do it as you can. One day at a time. You and Bee are much more important. Just praying that Bee is doing well and getting the help that she needs.

I appreciate you speaking up about autism. You mentioned it a couple of times before. I think it is important for people realize that autistic people are intelligent and able to lead very productive lives. You are a great example, thanks for being honest about it all. The fire and flood damage is so terrible. I don't know how you got through that video without breaking down. And knowing your dear sweet wife is also struggling with some emotional stuff makes your burden even greater. I am praying for both of you. Hang in there, you can do this. We believe in you.
