I actually worked on making the carbon fiber tubes of the NLAW about 12 years ago. It's kind of a one-use weapon, although you can reload it I was under the impression that it's not something the individual soldier does. It has to go back to the armory for that to happen. Also the NLAW is a bit wrongly depicted in the game as its warhead is armed above the target firing downwards with directed explosive action.

13:00 As someone who finished military service in anti-tank role, video games always get shoulder-mounted anti tank weaponry wrong, but they do so for good reason. The one thing that's wrong is fairly simple: The missile fired, no matter what it is, is ridiculously slow. The shoulder mounted launcher looks very similar to the APILAS system i'm very aware of and have fired a dozen or so times. It's a terrifying thing, because you feel it explode right next to your head as you fire it, then you feel it explode about 1-2s later 150-200m away. The speed of these missiles is absolutely immense, and the way they accelerate is even more insane. The APILAS system in particular is a guided missile that curves above the target and hits it directly from above.

APILAS is not a missile though, you probably meant NLAW. It's not a rocket either since all the propellant is burnt inside the launch tube. So I guess it could be classified as a HEAT grenade. @therazgriz00793 жыл бұрын
13:00 Pretty accurate depiction. The real NLAW, however, is single-use and disposable like the LAW 66 before it. As for the sighting system, it uses an ACOG like sight with the very traditional red chevron reticle. Never fired a live one but carried enough TES variants on exercise to know they are just as bulky and ungainly as they look.
@grumpyiranian85313 жыл бұрын
yeah the fact that it was being reloaded was kinda bugging me lol
@kireta213 жыл бұрын
It bugs me that BI opted for using NLAW as generic ATGM, when that thing is as unique as it gets. First, it uses overfly top-down attack like TOW-2B or Bill-2, allowing it to destroy heavy armor even from front, and making its minimum range so short, there is no need for short-range ATs to supplement it. Second is one-of-a-kind guidance system, where you track moving target for 3 seconds, gyroscopes read your movement, and targetting system calculates trajectory to target, and after launch follows it without any input from operator. Even if enemy tank has laser warning system and soft-kill APS, it will recieve no warning nor it will be able to prevent or disrupt lock. The only way for tank to protect itself from NLAW is to use doppler radar (that physically detects incoming missile) followed by hard-kill system. Then again, they used anti-infantry Mini-Spike at ATGM, and anti-tank Spike as MANPADS, so maybe they're just messing with us.

ArmA has quite a few awkward bits as pointed out with the reloads, but it's important to consider that it goes for scale over detail. If presented with the choice of attention to individual equipment or real-time combined arms combat over hundreds of square kilometers, it has a tendency to choose the latter. And I only wish he saw some more funky oddities of 2035. I'd love to hear his takes on the mental 9.3 Brenneke MG5, the SDAR (Kel-tec RFB goes 5.56 and underwater) or the main factions' fascination with 6.5 caseless (both NATO's shown CMMG MX and the Iranian military's rechambered KH2002 Sama standard-issue service rifles are chambered in it).

Finally! It's a pleasure to see such a nuanced critique, especially when it comes to Arma's lack of polish in the animation department. 11:34 I don't feel anything particulary distracting about it, to be honest, save for the lack of folding stock in almost any of the designs of this family save for the LMG. 13:52 Given that the conflict takes place in the Aegean region, it seems to be a play on the Cypriot National Guard using P90. 15:20 A bigger issue here is that the ingame model has a siderail, thus making it an AKMN, not the simple AKM.
@hakari50143 жыл бұрын
This siderail is from AK-100 series, so it doesn't make it an AKMN. Real AKMN rail looks different. It has a 2 piece design with visible screws and is mounted a bit higher and closer to the shooter. Search for Escape From Tarkov AKMN model as this is how it should look like.
@sillylittleowlguy23923 жыл бұрын

@@hakari5014 Ah, good catch! Indeed, I should've fired up the game to check the shape of the rail in closer detail, haven't played with an AKM from the DLC for quite a while. The manufacturing company's name is Sero Kft. , and the rifle is the sixth in the 'Gepárd'(Cheetah) series of rifles, as in Gepárd M6,hence the name GM6. Hopefully Mr Ferguson can have his hands on one such rifle very soon, since it will be issued in small numbers in the UK.

It’s nice to see the Scorpion Evo3 on one of these. It’s a surprise it’s not more popular in games. While it doesn’t stack up to the MPX or the mechanics of the MP-5, it is wildly popular in its own right with crazy amounts of customization, and arguably a better manual of arms than the MP-5 since it has a last round bolt hold on top of the MP-5 style nonreciprocating charging handle

Arma 3 is a lot of fun and is great about odd details. Many of the things that it gets wrong are due to not having proper animations on a relatively old game engine. Especially with bolt-action and lever-action weapons. But some of the stuff the modding community has done to meet that shortfall is amazing. Also, my guess with the Tavor's grenade launcher is because in Arma you can somewhat mix and match attachments to weapons.
@SchlopFlopper3 жыл бұрын
In A3, one of the factions uses the F2000 (under a different name) and a guerrilla group uses the Tavors and other captured equipment. It’s likely that they stripped the launchers from the F2000s and put them on their Tavors.

I don't think you said it in the final cut, but it's the a LSAT machine gun (USA). It was designed for both cased telescoped and caseless ammunition variants and I'm pretty sure it was never adopted, though they won't let it die and keep improving it. At the moment it no longer uses cased telescoped or caseless ammo and instead uses 5.56x45 NATO standard. It's neat, but like you figured; not a significant enough improvement over the M249 to replace it. (Edit: I forgot to add the timestamp 9:03)

It would be interesting to see a complementary series where Jonathan looks at the realism of the game mecahanics. I've always liked Arma 3's guns, especially when they upgraded a lot of the audio. One thing that's always bugged me with the fictional factions though is some of the strange choices where fictional factions will use odd choice guns, a lot of Israeli equipment on both sides for some reason, overall though it's a decent representation of what a near-future military could be equipped with.
@bathshebahubber6142 жыл бұрын
I'm not surprised by a lot of Israeli equipment being on both sides tbh.
@AlwarrenSidh2 жыл бұрын
I think the Israeli equipment is a left-over from the rather, shall we say, colorful history of Arma 3. Originally planned to be more realistic in scenario, the CSAT was supposed to have most of what NATO has now (there are very old pictures of e.g. Slammers in CSAT Hex camo) and NATO was supposed to be quite different. and only after "The Incident" was the game cut down and equipment re-distributed. In the original one, CSAT rsp. Iran had conquered Israel and had acquired a lot of their equipment, of which now only a few things are left like the Negev machine gun, or the Tavors used by the FIA.

@@buggus0034 the problem isn’t the way they are set up(bullpup or otherwise) the problem is that SMG’s are chambered in pistol cartridges and pistol cartridges do not have the capabilities to defeat body armor.
