Hi Jonathan! I work as a freelance 3D artist in the games industry and didn't work on anything you're likely to look at, but have enough experience to give you some idea as to why some things change. I don't know how many visits my university, Futureworks, has made since I visited in 2013, but you've got plenty of contact with games folks professionally so this will definitely make sense to you. With things like the SCAR magazine's bumper being different, it's a mixture of making sure that you get the same quality on the normal map (a baked texture that alters how surfaces appear, used to fake detail) across the entire asset, and to make some details read better on screen anyway. You're well familiar with why iron sights are either totally different or exaggerated in games and it's essentially the same reason- some details just don't translate into games well. It's one of those emergent things you get a feel for once you've done enough art. Another great example would be the ribbing on an MP5SD's handguard; the authentic number of grooves might look at bit too noisy depending on display size, resolution, viewmodel position and so on, and sometimes it's either reduced to a realistic degree or put on the normal map (unless you're stylising a game you wouldn't do this for a first-person gun with the hardware most people play on now) In the case of there not being enough reference for something, we might run out of time to work on an asset or the original might have parts that don't read well on screen. It's a hard lesson I've had to teach myself about asset production that eventually, we have to just declare something done. An L1A1 I made for my current client doesn't have the full bolt assembly or breech because the carrier is so large you don't really see it at all, which is a good example of what I mean. It's on the other side of the gun, it's not on screen for long, a few other reasons why. My experience isn't *as* valuable as the people who work at Ryzin art (the studio that made the weapons for MW2019, at least), but I think it's worth a read anyway! Cheers. 😊

@jonathanferguson12112 жыл бұрын
@@ramiere1412 That remains unclear. The names are altered for legal reasons, without doubt. However, the legal issues around design patents and likenesses is really unclear. The FAMAS for example - that has no standing design patent in the US and the chances of the French suing Activision for a 100% likeness are zero. Yet they still redesigned it with a gas piston system. Some designs, like the Not Glock X12/X13 are practically speaking identical to the Glock 17/18, so clearly they're not worried about that despite Glocks being wildly popular and quite likely protected under "trade dress" provisions. There's no consistency, hence it's unlikely that legal concerns are the main driver here.

I want Jonathan to see the guns of "Warhammer 40k: Darktide". I think he'd enjoy it.

the energy rifle type gun was a gun in call of duty advanced warfare back in 2014 but it was called the EM1 idk why they changed the name considering I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be the same gun it also didn't have ammo in the original version but would just overheat after a bit I didn't know they brought it back so that's cool I guess. But to answer the "why is it in call of duty" question it was from 2014 when call of duty was trying to be Titanfall until a lot of people got mad and they went back to making WW2 - modern time games, I think the EM1 was probably just a throwback/reference gun to advanced warfare

I’m a fan of the uniquely British indignation with which he delivers “I guess that’s why they call it the Fafar and not the Fafamas.”

I'd love to see a devs react to Jonathan reacting specifically with a view to making the guns legally different, and mixing up features of different guns in order to do so

thank god nobody told him the only game the laser gun appeared in was vanguard

Jones on you Johnathan! There IS a video of a guy doing run-and-gun with a PTRS. It's a very short video and you can tell her struggles with it but there is a video so technically it's plausible

Now that you’ve had him react to the laser gun, have him react to Advanced Warfare weapons.

3:30 huh, that reminds me a lot of the MP5, in its longer variants anyway

Another awesome video, thank you again. Would you ever consider covering the stuff from enlisted? And thank you again for the awesome work.

The irl muzzle device is an attachment for the an94 in cod what you get literally the 2nd level of the gun so its fine

Hey, I say what I see :) Also, it wouldn't function properly with anything other than the unlock. But yes, as long as you can unlock correct attachments for guns, as a player I'm happy.

Man, I feel like Jonathan deserves to see a game that faithfully replicates guns in the next episode after this one.

Please do part 2 on HLL. There is still scoped FG-42, some handguns, Browning, MG42, SVD + scoped variant, Springfield with scope and flare guns, Panzerschreck and Bazooka, Anti tank guns, and grenades (3 variants for germans and 2 for USA).

Gaming companies should pay Jonathan for advise when designing historic weapons, it would be nice to see more realistim in games.
