I’d love if they added an animation for the PP-19 where your character tries to do theatrical magazine flip, drops it on the ground, watches as all the rounds are vomited out, grabs a new mag out of a pouch, and kicks the old one aside like the proverbial ice cube under the fridge.

Re: Wood texturing. It's been done for nearly 20 years, but not with direct modelling of the wood grain, rather with a technique named "bump mapping", which is a mapping that "simulates" the higher fidelity effects on the textures without actually putting in the (resource intensive) polygons, using just the shaders. It's been done at least since the time of CS:Source, and not just for wood textures. Edit: see more accurate and knowledgeable corrections in the replies
@Kaleidio
@Kaleidio 2 жыл бұрын
I was about to say this as well, thank you for vouching. however you are mildly incorrect...bump mapping, which goes beyond normal mapping, utilizes a texture map to tesselate (add extra triangles and displace in accordance to a map such as a Parallax Occlusion Map. this is more performant than uploading models to the gpu as the gpu is generating triangles on the fly) new triangles into the mesh. this is done just before the geometry shader of the pipeline. normal maps and specular maps can do something similar (they are also both pixel shaders in the pipeline) but it's not a true bump, it's a lighting interaction, giving the effect and performance you described.

@@Kaleidio Don't you mean height / displacement mapping? Normal mapping (Dot3 bump) is a bump map implementation that uses RGB instead of grayscale, the values correspond to XYZ coordinates, while bump mapping uses only one channel to fake depth. I also know that TF2 used to call normal maps *_bump.vtf, so I guess it's the same thing in CS:S.

14:20 there is a company called Unity Tactical that makes the optics mounting solution I'm assuming this is based off of. The whole idea is that you put your already tall optic on an even taller mount to make passive aiming with night vision easier on your neck, and then that extra height gives you enough room for your magnifier to have a mount that flips down instead of to the side where it can get caught on things

A note about wood textures, fine 3D details like wood grain are often achieved with normal or "bump" maps on the textures which allow the textures to sort of "fake" small 3 dimensional details on the flatter, simpler 3D polygons underneath. That's how most games get things like wood to look realistically bumpy or grained without requiring insanely detailed and intensive 3D models.

Jonathan, in regards to the thermal optic... plastic, perspex etc. would have the same effect as glass. Thermal cameras/scopes cannot work through any material as it just give the temperature of the material it is looking at so anything in front of the sight would render it useless and you wouldn't actually be able to see anything at just a wall of whatever colour scale the sight is set to (assuming the glass/plastic in front is one temperature of course).

so to answer for the wood textures, there are such of things called bump and roughness maps where it is a map that is put with the texture to add depth and 3D looking stuff on the textures because if there are minor details that would maybe be bumpy or be very small crevices bump maps show them very well because those few extra polys will always lower optimization and more work than is needed

Also of note about the AUG folding grip. Its attached to the barrel because the system has a quick-change barrel feature, and the foregrip is where the operator can grab and swap barrels without burning their hands. This is similar to many lmgs where the carry handle is attached to the barrel for the same reason. The HK21 also included in this game has a rectangular protrusion on the right-hand side of the barrel shroud. This is their version of a 'handle' for swapping barrels.

I was drafted in Thailand, which has HK33 in service, and I can confirm that HK33's mag release button is quite too far to reach with right hand's index finger, and it is quite stiff to the point that it is easier to use right hand's thumb to press it. Also, most of us (draftees) didn't do "HK slap" when reload, but we just did pull charging handle back and down from bolt hold open notch and release it without homing it to forward position.

The FTC (flip to center) magnifier optic mount is from Unity Tactical, and is sweet. Also, the extended rail section on the Scar 20 is likely modeled after the Kinectic Development Group rail extensions. Having it lower than the monolithic rail allows you to mount lasers out of the way of optics and such.

14:21 flip-down/up magnifier: Unity Tactical FAST mount comes to mind. Used specifically with a 2.26" height red dot, which is itself set at that height for better passive aiming with night vision. Mounting a red dot that high allows one to see over the magnifier when flipped down and means the magnifier isn't jutting out to the side of the weapon and possibly getting caught or damaged.

Most games do wood grain texturing via bump mapping, which is essentially a lighting trick to make things looks more 3D using luminance. If you want the actual geometry to change they could generate a heightmap (texture that describes height values) and generate some sort of tessellation(additional geometry) on it when your holding on to it. This would essentially do what your thinking of and create the wood grain geometry. Issue is it ends up using a lot of performance for something that doesn't look all that much better than bump mapping. Generally flat textures do well with bump mapping, and its not until you look at the contours that your realize the geometry is flat.

The lower profile height here is intended as a platform for LAM/PEQ/MAWL devices that would normally interfere with optics or sight profile if mounted on the same plane as the monolithic rail. I have a PEQ-15 on mine for NV IR laser aiming. It sits down out of view and decreases issues you would normally get if you were to side mount those type of devices (as used to be the trend).

Jonathan, Unity tactical makes that flip down magnifier, FAB defense also makes one that puts a magnifier below the optic for storage but that one is kinda like an elevator.

Fun fact, in the sniping mission (I can't remember if it's still named all ghillied up or not but the remake of that mission) when you're on the roofs throwing gas in the air vents if you look through the windows in the top of the roof w a thermal scope it doesn't work since thermal won't work through glass

The hybrid mount on the scar dmr is based on the unity mount for magnifiers. It stows down instead of off to the side. They're made to work with all of their unity risers which are 2.25" high, except the Eotech riser of course.

there was like a certain FLIR setting i remember some of the USCG aviators i used to work with that they said was sorta like a "low-power" infrared that could kinda see through glass a bit. basically if you think of the light spectrum infrared is a section of that spectrum that sits "below" visible light (less energy/radiation). iirc (i was not an operator of this equipment, just an IT girl that helped maintain some of their training systems) this basically was looking at the lower end of the visible light spectrum and the upper end of infrared simultaneously and so was able to kinda see through glass. just remember tho i am not an expert in this field so i could be misremembering a lot here, i encourage others to look into it if you're interested.

14:39 Any experts here to chime in; doesn't glass block thermal cameras because they use infrared, and we _intentionally_ paint glass in infrared paint for home applications (as opposed to weapon sights) for thermal management?

The mount for the optic on the SCAR looks to be based off of the Unity Fast mounts. They mount the optic over 2in off the rail so the magnifier can flip to the center.

The RPK in the game seems to be modeled and textured after some batches of AES-10b (Romanian semi auto RPK clone), imported into the US in the late 2000s. They were made from surplus guns on a new receiver that's been phosphated (similar to the WASR 10/63). The originals were late production (generally 1978-1989) with no mag dimple and squarer looking laminate wood with noticeable nails for reinforcement. The wear on the wood is identical to a bunch of stock sets. The color does look more red/darker on the in-game model, though.

The flip down magifier on the SCAR is a real world design. It’s the FAST magnifier mount made by Unity Tactical. It’s a magnifier for a hight mount optic for use with night vision and upright head position.

On the topic of the magnifier flipping down instead of out- they do exist, as of the past few years, one specifically I know of is the unity FAST mount for an aimpoint magnifier, I'm sure other brands offer that type of flip mount aswell. Typically for micro magnifiers.

The scar handguard extension is real, I think the point it to mount a peq2 box on top so you can manipulate it with a pressure pad or extreme forward grip. the peq2 has its controls laid out in such of a way that it wont be interfered with by the gas block but also doesn't add bulk or snag points to the gun.

The flip magnified thermal is a fictionalized Steiner thermal holographic with a magnifier on the unity tactical FTC (flip to center) mount. These are paired with unity risers for aimpoints or eotechs typically to reach a carry handle optic height for ease of passive use with NVG. The ability to flip to center is a secondary benefit of this system.

The flip-to-center magnifier was created fairly recently by Unity Tactical. It requires a specific mount or rail riser to pair with standard red dot and holographic sights.

Regarding the thermal-imaging magnifier on the hybrid sight... Making a thermal imaging camera work through a lens would require one that's transparent in infrared. The problem is, there's very, _very_ few materials that are properly transparent in infrared. I personally only know of one such material; germanium. It's used in the lenses of infrared cameras. I'm not fully familiar with all of its properties, but I don't think it makes for a good holographic sight...
