Johnathan, there is a “black powder” only season for Whitetail deer in West Virginia every year. While many people use the more modern “in-line” smoothbore guns, there are still many people who use reproduction muzzle-loaders no different than what would have been used to hunt Whitetail 150-200 years ago. My father has, hanging on a wall in his basement, a “Virginia Rifle” manufactured in the 1750s, which belonged to one of our ancestors (I believe the brother of his great-great-great grandfather) and which was used in or around the time of the American Revolution.

So regarding the Nuka Cola rifle... This is a nod. In 1986, Winchester and Coca-Cola created a promotional brand-crossover 94E 3030 and 1500-XTR, sold as a set. 2500 sets were ordered to be manufactured, but they stopped at just under 1600 after Coca Cola pulled out and cancelled. The product pairing was part of Coca Cola's 100th anniversary celebration, and was perhaps somewhat shortsighted given the era. The weapons now command a hefty price at auction, with one auction Starting at 1795 back in 2020.

So, with the muzzle loaders in 76, they're part of the games smaller references to West Virginia's role in the American Civil War; there were several in game events on launch that were related to burying a soldiers remains or fighting other players wearing Union or Confederate uniforms. These were events during the games launch, but they had enough issues that they've been removed since. The developers haven't expand on the Civil War stuff since.

Yeah, the lack of velocity imparted by black powder weapons(comparatively speaking, of course) is the reason for the 2-bore and 4-bore "stopping rifles". When you absolutely had to put something down, the only way you could reliably do that was with a heavier bullet, since there was a notable limit on the pressure you could develop, and so the velocity you could impart, on a bullet.
@Sn1pEzTV9 ай бұрын
For the Colt Single Action Army i could imagine the first person animation to work, is that under the barrel there is some sort of button-pressed mechanism to spin the cylinder around (instead of ejecting the bullet-cases). But since the third person animation is completely different, there is no excuse for that. xD

It's right there in his goldurn title, Of Firearms and *Artillery*, how could they mess up that?!?
@Goodzikc9 ай бұрын
Absolutely loved the video as always! In the games defense, the high damaged of the black powder weapons is allowed and or needed as an offset to the slow reload time for balancing. Also the leveling system (though needed due to being a multiplayer open world game) is more of a holdover from its original form upon release. In the initial release enemies would grow stronger depending on the region, and so as you gained higher levels, you needed higher damaging weapons to deal with new threats etc. This allowed for players to have a good idea of the grade and ability of their equipment, relative to the strength of the enemies in a zone this was changed in future updates where now the enemies level is scaled to each players level (so if two players are looking at the same enemy to one it may be a level 100 and to the other its a level 5) so that newer/low level players could play with their higher level friends. Also (something that is still relevant) is that balance wise it allows the game to level lock certain weapons so that you don't have a level 1 player running around with a fatman or auto grenade launcher just decimating all the low level enemies and/or causing a mess. Fun fact: Fallout 4 had a similar system to this, though being a single player game was able to be implemented more subtly. At higher levels enemies start using/spawning less with pipe weapons and more with combat rifles etc. the higher levels allow you to unlock more levels of gun nut, allowing you to modify your weapon to deal more damage to the now higher level and stronger enemies etc.

You know, that just might be one of the most terrifying weapons to imagine facing down. With regards to the 10mm Smg it is a pre war weapon. In general fallout for ballistic weapons follow a very unique design philosophy due to the resource wars and lack of oil supply most modern weapons in the lore are basically just steel aluminum and wood with some rubber. Very little plastics or bakelite. Giving it a very unique design aesthetic as well since it blends in ww2 weapons (which were still in use by many groups), 70s esque weapons, and mashed up modernish weapons with some post war hodgepodges as well. The barrel modifications regarding it are likely post war but do still fit with the weapon designs we’ve seen prior of it.

9:57 The heavy weapons being handheld really only makes sense when wearing Power Armor, since in-universe that's what Power Armor was built to do. So instead of needing an armored vehicle to carry the .50 Cal to the frontline, you just have one guy in the suit carrying it around. 21:10 You have to unlock the Gauss Minigun by raising your reputation with the Raiders faction at the Crater settlement. It's a very powerful weapon, but its ammo is among the heavier ammo types in the game.

Fallout has had arcane and magic elements in the series since the very beginning. The entire plot of fallout 1 for example revolves around defeating a Psykers including telekinetics, Pyrokinetics, and Telepaths. It’s been a very consistent throughline for much of the series. Fallout 2 even has you help a ghost out.

Seeing Jonathan react to the Single Action Army almost makes me wish for a Fistful of Frags episode.

A video on Armored Core 6 or Roboquest weapons would be interesting

19:04 The (legendary effect) Faster Firing Speed ones are deadlier and funner. It’s my goto for ammo efficiency and impact. Also, back during the Beta and early release days, an audiobug made it so you could hear them across the map. Sounded like some Anti-Air battery going off.

They need to hire Jonathan for the next fallout game

In colts first Fallout scene when he is butting his hand under barrel he uses his little finger while gripping in small lifting movement to rotate the barrel.

I love that he's a Fallout fan as well as an expert. Love these series.

You should show Jonathan the Operation Sunburst Animation by SODAZ when its finished! I think Jonathan would LOVE seeing all the guns depicted And how they're used Both by and against Power Armor

I liked the bakelite battery on a gauss shotgun. Complements nixie tubes nicely.

Although they're older, I think Jonathan Ferguson, Keeper of firearms and artillery at the Royal Armories Musuem, would have a field day with the Soldier of Fortune games. Especially with the Desert Eagle reload animation.

The 10mm SMG is a pre-War weapon. From before the Great War that ended the world. The arcane stuff is in Fallout and has been since Fallout 3.

And it isn't just "reminiscent" of an HK, it's actually called the HK MP9 in Fallout 1&2.

Hi Dave, it'd be great to see Jonathan, Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armouries in the UK, react to the guns and artillery pieces of the Empire, Dwarfs, Chaos Dwarfs, Vampire Coast, etc. in Total War Warhammer 3.

Actually on the subject of using big guns in power armor, you can get a perk card that makes them handle a lot better in terms of recoil and stuff while in power armor but not out of it

once again asking for Jonathan Ferguson, the keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries museum in the UK to react to the weapons from Cruelty Squad

The two games that I'd really like Jonathan Ferguson (the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a a collection of thousands of Iconic weapons from throughout history) to react to are Warframe and Nikke. As... unique as the latter game is, there is at least one gun nerd on its development team which means that they have a lot of interesting reload animations, including one where a character swaps out their entire barrel, rather than a magazine or any other ammo storage/feed device.

Hey Dave, if you are planning on making another episode on Fallout 76, I could provide you with weapons in game or footage of weapons as I have most weapons unlocked in the game. Love the show, been watching for ages.

I had been asking of them making Fallout 76 videos about the weapons.

Not *strictly* true about the heavy weapon handling being the same in power armour. There's a perk you can take that means heavy guns in power armour gain increased accuracy, as though you were able to hold it more steady!

21:25 Fallout Tactics already had a gauss pistol, a gauss rifle and a gauss minigun which fire the 2mm EC magnetic projectiles.
@Yoel_Mizrachi9 ай бұрын
If you want to replicate the shotgun effect with gauss gun you just have a 'cartridge' with multiple projectiles (shots or dart etc.) of non ferromagnetic material sit on ferromagnetic sabot. Basically the shotgun shell without the shell, gunpowder and primer.

I am saddened that you did not show Jonathan Ferguson, the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armories Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history, that you could mod the Pepper Shaker to use either plasma or laser ammunition along with modding more or less barrels to it, I kinda wanted to hear him be horrified by it lol
