To answer the question on sights, you were right when you said that its to increase visibility. Because the average fight in cod isn’t usually any further than 50 meters and because the game centres the sight for you they will either raise on widen the sight to make it more usable. Especially in the older games where adding a red dot would mean you couldnt use any other attachments Ps: the stg was more of a callback gun as it was the first modern game in the series, and stat wise was a slight worse ak47. Which i guess is kinda historically accurate haha

I've always felt that game devs intentionally fudge gun designs in order to avoid having to pay licensing fees to the companies that originaly designed and built the guns. Two good examples of this are the .45 Auto SMG from Fallout New Vegas's Honest Hearts dlc and Fallout 3's Chinese Assault Rifle. The Chinese AR is basically a cut down and modified RPD. The .45 Auto SMG is a combination of a Thompson M1 SMG and a Thompson M1A1 SMG.

From what I recall Sawyer's reason for giving all the guns in NV "generic" branding is because while he wanted to take inspiration from real guns, as a game they wanted the creative freedom to take artistic license with the balancing, calibers, and designs. While most of the ballistic guns are modelled after real-world guns, the intent is that none of them technically are their real-world counterparts, because that would imply an adherence to realism that was never intended and was intentionally avoided.
@bradhaines31422 жыл бұрын
they only have to do that for the names because of copyright law, the actual image can be basically identical.
@0lionheart2 жыл бұрын
Fallout is a _really_ bad example given it's alternate history, from the 1940's onwards everything is different, designs are uncanny valley on purpose. It's also an artistic and creative chioce anyway, by having freedom to change things you're giving your artists work that's more fun, and you have deniability when people come around and point out pedantic details aren't correct.

As has been said and repeated many times, I'm sure; You got it right with the first guess, the sights are made so for gameplay reasons. There are games that do notch sights right, but those are not arcade run-and-gun games like the CoD series. It would be very difficult and honestly frustrating to ADS (aim down sights) in a fast paced shooter and come up with what is essentially a grey blob and then figure out where the center of that blob is to know your point of aim. It is far more intuitive to instead present just the front sight post and fudge the rest of the sights into something that give the impression of aiming down a weapon. Basically replicating what one would see if aiming down an aperture sight. There might also be a reasoning with differences how a single eye might percieve depth while aiming and how a screen can replicate it. With the eye, seeing the post might be very easy while as a screen might not be able to differentiate the post from the rear notch enough to allow for quick, precice ADS in a competitive video game. Just a curious case of games replicating real life in that notch sights have universally been phased out where possible in favour of aperture sights.

It's safe to say that games getting the notch on the rear sights wrong is done on purpose most of the time. It's to give the player a better view of the target since you don't have to use both parts of the sights to aim, you only use the front post. This is to make the front post more visible, give players an easier time aiming, especially in a fast paced game like CoD.

I think the remark about iron-sights being off will be there ffor as long as this show continues, as making them larger has to be done for the sake of gameplay convenience : because it is on a screen, the optics will not work as they do IRL, as your eye won't adjust the same way. In fact, l’m not even sure it would work in VR, "because screens and not actual aperture" (and maybe some people who actually have and like VR, unlike me, could tell). But on a classic screen there is no chance games could do a 100% accurate ironsight, as it would feel cumbersome and get in the way of the fun.
@stevbe17232 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about that, surely it would be possible (as some games already have adaptive depth of field, like payday 2) to have the rear sight sort of out of focus, while having the front sight as well as what you're aiming at in focus, that would be the closest to how your eyes actually interact with iron sights
