This is a great video, its something that seems to get passed over alot, It seems like common sense to train the way you fight but when your adrenaline kicks you react and do what you are used to. I recently experienced this, I just got a CCW permit, so Ive been carrying my CZ85, Ive also been carrying knives for years and years now and I always have at least one, usually a benchamde 710 or 810 and my Benchmade 531 I went to an ATM after work and its in a secluded corner of a parking lot, I noticed a guy hanging out and, after I got my money he walks up and asks me for a smoke, I told him no, then he asks for a few bucks, I told him no, then he turns away from me I hear the flick of a knife, and he turns back and waives the knife around and tells me to give him my wallet and keys. Startled, I pretended to be very scared and put my hands up, and told him something like "ok ok here take them" (I was scared, my adrenaline was pumping but I was surprisingly calm for the situation) I had my benchmade 810 in my pocket like usual and, I had my CZ85, I didnt even think about going for the gun, I grabbed the knife, because thats what Ive been used to having. Unfortunately, a penny had wedged itself in between the blade and the liner so my knife wouldnt open, and still I didnt think to go grab my CZ, I instantly decided I was going to go for my other knife a small Benchmade 531, Before I could he slashed at me I blocked the blade and captured his wrist (ive had some knife defense training, It kicked in) he caught the meaty part of my left palm just below the little finger and I got cut pretty badly but only felt warmth, Still I hadnt had the reaction to go for the gun. I still had my 810 in my hand and I pulled him by the wrist I had captured towards me and off to the side, and just out of reaction I threw a sloppy right hook with the closed knife in my hand and hit him right on the ear with an open palm and the pocket clip side of my knife. So I basically boxed his ear with the side of the knife. he went down hard and was basically unconscious. after I stopped the bleeding, I realized that I never even thought about grabbing my gun, not because I didnt want to or think I wouldnt be justified to use it, but because I wasnt used to having it. Its pretty hard to forget you are carrying a full sized all steel pistol the thing is 43oz loaded, but I went for the knife I had simply because thats what I was used to.

I love your videos and watch them regularly. I don't often comment, but this has got to be one of my favorites. If this were in church I'd be holler'n HALLELUJAH- AMEN BROTHER! You're speaking the truth about conditioning and "automatic response". While we all try to avoid these kinds of life and death moments- we don't get to choose the actions of others. We can only prepare for them. This doctrine of preparedness is what makes for survivors instead of victims.

Great video. The conditioned reflex is why the military (Army and Marines especially) changed the way they teach weapons skills. Before, they used to be taught that if your weapon jams or malfunctions on the range, you raise your non-firing hand and wait for the range master to assist you. They found that younger soldiers were experiencing jams on the battle field, and raising their hands and waiting for help.

this guys right i lost a 4 by 4 buck two years back because i never fired with the iron sights. I shot twice at the buck missed because the scope was off. I instinctively razed the scope to my eye both times. I should have use the iron sighs more often that is how i shot a doe the next day with the same gun

You've sealed the deal Eric! I'm going to Moss Pawn as soon as possible. I'm not sure I learned anything, as some of this seemed instinctive. I even carry in my home and randomly practice drawing my pistol, but mostly to check for my "natural" sight alignment and sight picture "muscle memory". But I need to be more proactive about how I carry. Going from open carry to concealed is the hardest, but sometimes we have to go concealed to "get along" with the general public. My M9FS Beretta has a safety and I've "clicked" it off when I see things that don't seem right, because I honestly know that I would miss that most important step in an emergency. This video reminds me that I need to practice with my snap caps more, and work the safety as I draw, as my natural grip and sight alignment is already mastered. Again, great post Eric, I hope I get to meet you at Moss Pawn.

Excellent video Mr. Barry. Anatomically speaking we don't produce new groves in our brain any time we learn something new; but your example very well illustrates how we can achieve a "conditioned reflex" ...just the way laureate Nobel Prize Ivan Petrovich Pavlov demonstrated using his famous experiments with dogs :"and the process whereby dogs or humans learn to connect a stimulus to a reflex is called conditioning..." Thank you again Sir, thank you Erick.

So true on what many CCW'ers wrongly take for granted. For example when Barry mentioned the possibility of an incidence while pumping gas and how quickly one would HAVE to know how to immediately utilize his weapon it made me think of many guys I know who pocket carry in less than ideal pants and could in no way get to that gun quick enough to save their life--Conversely, I know of guys that carry in the pocket using the "correct" pants whereby the gun can easily be accessed.Be smart like Barry!

Talking about the brass bucket, Ive got a similair story about swedish UN soldiers, involved in combat in the Balkans. When confronted with hostile T-55 tanks, the infantrymen hauled their recoilless rifles into position. For some reason later, they were ordered to pull back while still under fire. The commander waiting for a while went back to their position, finding the soldiers collecting the 84mm spent casings from their guns, just like at the fireing range back in Sweden.

On the topic of buckets, in my LE Function class our prof was telling us that in the 1986 Miami FBI shootout, as well as several other instances, officers using revolvers were found with brass in their pockets because the would dump their brass into their hand before reloading.

7:14 "This is a rough sketch of a human brain"... The next 30 seconds from the Professor is one of the most important lessons you can learn in regards to doing *anything* under pressure. First aid, firearms, driving, self defense, sports, whatever. Train for real life situations. With somebody yelling at you. With 2 hours sleep. In your underwear. With somebody throwing things at you. In the rain. In the dark. With a blinding headache. Train until you're visualizing it as you're falling asleep.

Very good video. I just got done reading a Concealed Carry and Self Defense basics book which also discussed these topics. Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's "On Combat" (and "On Killing" I suppose too) goes into great detail and discussion about these topics as well. Just as important as these topics you covered, is ALWAYS be in "Condition Yellow" when out in public. It's kinda scary how many people just walk around oblivious, in "Condition White".
