Thank you for hitting on the issue of becoming complacent. It can't be hit on enough, If you are handling a fire-arm you should be wary. Not fearful, but definitely aware of your surroundings and aware of every action you take. Good vid guys, very very good vid.

It's nice to see yet another video with Barry at the helm! I do think it is a great idea to invest in a pair of nice shooting gloves that'll protect a person's hands. Eyes and ears are the most important thing to us human beings, but I wouldn't want to make life any more harder by injuring part of a finger or hand either.

Most excellent video Barry, you and Eric really hit home the safety issues related to responsible gun ownership and handling of guns. We all really appreciate how well you touch the subject without it ever becoming something that sounds like its just a disclaimer or something you say because its become a habit to say it. Thank you so for go graciously giving your time to making these videos, please keep up the good work, these gun facts are a pleasure to take in, if for any reason you ever think you need to do something besides working in the gun business become a history professor, it would be a natural fit for you.

+Pink Sapphire Me too! I, too, just recently learned what a squib load was and actually learned about them right here on KZbin. I heard Barry and Eric talking about them and had no idea what they were talking about, so I looked it up. Being that they are so dangerous, I also wish the info was included in more safety "talks". I have watched plenty of them, and had never heard of them before.

Excellent topic. I had a bad .223 go off on me, I knew something was different, but thought about continuing. Good for m a range officer happened to be close and knew something was wrong from from the sound. Turned out ok but could have been bad, probably a bad round, the casing was split near the back and the mags bottom blew out(as designed). You always need to be aware.

Very Important video. Barry is exactly right about eventually having an incident if you fool around with firearms for any period of time. Safety glasses are a must after I was at the range firing a Turkish Mauser. Had purchased some 8mm Remington Kleanbore ammo that looked to be early 50's vintage it looked in good shape and I felt ok shooting it. On about the 12th shot had one of the rounds burn through the case and blast my face with hot gunpowder. Thankfully I had my safety glasses on.

Eye Protection saved my left eye! True story! On 1/2/2014, I went to a shooting range that had steel targets with my CZ P-01. An old timer came and set up shop next to me with his 4 1911's and endless reloaded ammo. His first, a Colt Govt. Model, his recoil spring plug broke, and as result his slide was stuck with a live round. So after the range master cleared that issue. He pulls out a Kimber Classic 2. As soon as he hits his first shot, and heard the steel, I felt something hit the bottom half of my goggles. The steel targets were about 10 yards away. Is that too close?

As a 22 year old shooter with 2 years of experience, safety got drilled into me from day one. Safety is always on when it should, eyes and ear protection always. I check where my cases fly to. I only insert 5 rounds into my magazine. If i am not shooting, i remove the bolt from my rifle. Some of these might sound to much to many, but i like shooting and safe shooting is the only thing that will allow me to keep doing this for as long as possible great video guys!

I appreciate the effort you put into this video. I'm an RSO at a Skeet Range of all things and I've had to discharge people from the premises. Weirdest thing I've ever seen is my friend Sean catching a #8 shot under his eye, and showing that bad things can happen if you don't wear the proper equipment for the sport you choose. Also, HARP on hearing protection, I wore "foamies" most of my early years, tell them to get their children small size triple flange plugs, they are much easier to use.

This is the best video y'all have ever made. I have been bit by a semiautomatic slide. I also discharged a hunting rifle that I was sure was unloaded. Thank god I pointed it to the ground. My nephew who has been in the army for 6 years got a scope brow from a 30-06. I think you need to make more of these safety videos. Maybe break down each type of gun safety. BTW the last 3 firearms, I have bought was from Moss. Barry sold me 2 of them. I will continue dealing with Moss and Barry!

Hi Barry. At 5:10 you mentioned weapons are mostly drop-safe, but what you probably wanted to say is do not try to catch the guns if they fall out of your hand - maybe reason No.1. of accidental discharges.

Yes, there are good options available. Get them if you shoot - regular glasses won't do anything for eye protection, just add glass shards to the damage.

THANK YOU FOR THIS. About getting complacent: Terry Kath, former guitarist of the band Chicago. In a party on Jan. 23, '78, he started joking about Russian roulette. He put his empty revolver to his head and started pulling the trigger. He then took out his 9mm and told the host of the party, "Don't worry, it's not loaded," showing him an empty magazine. He put the magazine back, put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. He'd forgotten there was a round in the chamber. He died instantly.

Safety is paramount. First thing I was taught as a kid was "THE GUN IS ALWAYS LOADED." It was only recently in an NRA Gun Safety Training class that I finally observed the protocol for when it is confirmed empty, and that once it is set down, that "Empty" status is wiped. Twenty years of "ALWAYS LOADED" I may have been incorrect a lot, but at least my being incorrect was safe.

treating every gun as if it were loaded saved me from having a negligent discharge on at least 2 occasions where I "thought" the gun was unloaded, but out of habit checked the chamber and low and behold...it was loaded...once it was my own gun that I inconsistently had it loaded and/or unloaded. another was someone else's gun that they just passed to me to look at

Fair point, it does come down to what you train for. Bear in mind that I live in Europe and my range has very strict safety regulations. Combat training is out of the question unless I rent the gunshop's range for just myself, then I can do whatever I want, provided I don't destroy their equipment. God forbid I ever get in a firefight, I will lose fractions of a second or more from lack of training, but thems the breaks.

In the classes I took we didn't really drill it. Actually, one older lady in my basic pistol class even commented that the class felt rushed and she wished it was longer. There is a lot to know. Again, I did like the video because I chose to take the experiences he shared as a reminder not to become complacent. This video only contains a small fraction of the basics. This would be more of a follow up to drive home the importance of safety than a video to learn it from.

you also need to make sure the class of safety glasses is the correct class, as a class 1 won't stop impacts where as a class 2 and 3 will. class2 is mainly for indoors like factories etc class 3 is generally for outdoors so they will have the 100% UV cut as well as the impact protection.

Squib load is when u fire the gun and there is not enough power to shoot the bullet out of the barrel and it gets stuck. Then if u shoot another bullet before getting the stuck bullet out of the barrel the gun will most likely blow up.

This was about 20 odd yrs ago. I was shooting a friend's .38 special revolver into a snow bank. Unbeknownst to me, there was a propane tank BEHIND the snow bank. I went behind the snow to see what my shots had done and low and behold there was the tank. It scared the shit out of me to say the least. Luck was on my side that day. Yes, you can wear appropriately sized safety glasses over your street glasses, but it looks kinda dorky. However, this gives you the advantage of having multiple lens tints to choose from as replacements are cheap. If you shoot a lot, it may be worthwhile to get some prescription safety glasses. Street glasses, no matter the size, are not adequate eye protection. hope this helps. Tight groups.

This is how I avoid firearm complacency: I do not remove my weapon from a holster unless I am somewhere safe to discharge the weapon, with the weapon pointing in an appropriate direction, range style. I carry every single day, I use holsters that can detach easily, and leave the firearm in the holster. Retention is important. Minimizing time out of holster, minimizes % ND. Couple this with all of the normal safety mentioned in the vid and greater enhance your safety.
