I'm 62 years old and remember when it was common to go to a county fair or a carnival and find the booth where you could shoot a .22 rifle at balloons to win a prize. Those were the good 'ole days!

wrightconnection I have heard some stories that at the fairs in the early 20th century the Fair owners would get a gunsmith to replace a 22 gallery gun's rifled barrel with an unrifled one and mess up the sights.

@Ricky Robyn Appears to have been beaten by the 22-250 with has much the same ballistics. The 22-250 is very popular here in Australia and is ideal for most of what we shoot which are all vermin ie ferals and introduced species. The rest are protected including crocs.Cheers

One .22 cartridge not mentioned, that was of particular interest to me was the .22 Hornet. Excellent whitetail deer cartridge under 100 yards as well as varmints out to 400 yards.

I agree. Grandma Darlene used to hunt caribou with a .22 K Hornet, back in the day, when she lived in Fairbanks, Alaska. She later upgraded to a .223 Remington and successfully took down everything up to and including Moose.

You might have been a good enough marksman to bring down a deer under 100 yards. But I do believe most hunters would just wound the animal and have it run off and die. I am 79 years old. My dad gave me my first rifle, a Remington pump for my 10th birthday and I have hunted deer, elk, ducks, geese, pigs rabbits, all kinds of game . I consider myself a good marksman, but I would never hunt a deer with a 22 Hornet.

@@danclayberger770 While I have to admit that my 'go to' white tail rifle in my area was the Winchester '94 30-30 for the common 'less than 50 yards' brush gun, but, for the "clearer" areas I preferred the Hornet. The Winchester was open irons while the hornet had vintage "optics" that I could hold a $.50 group at 80 yards. The ONLY shot I would accept at those yardages was 'head on' between the eyes. Never had a 'runner'. One shot, one deer. Nowadays, with the diabetes, massive weight gain, failing eyesight and heart troubles, I am limited to reminiscing of hunts long ago. Ken

Back in the day the 222 was the one to beat on the target range. They built the 219 zipper,220swith, 218 bee, 221 fireball to try and beat them but the 222 out last them over time because of the barrel would last longer

Quiet right, 222 a brilliant round killed off be 223 but the 22-250 is alive and well. I have a Mauser in 22-250 and is best calibre and action I have ever had and I have had a few.

.22 PPC is a different cartridge than the 5.45x39. The .22 PPC was originally a wildcat based on the .220 Russian cartridge. The .220 Russian is essentially a 7.62x39 necked down. It was a Russian sporting cartridge. The guys who invented the .22 PPC took the .220 Russian and improved it with a 30 degree shoulder and less case taper. It is one of the most efficient and accurate cartridges in the world. Arguably the most accurate short range benchrest cartridge is the .22 PPC's big brother, 6mm PPC which is the winning-est BR cartridge in history. The 5.45x39 has a smaller rim and body diameter than the .220 Russian and .22 PPC

the first thing for me that came to mind when you went .22 center fire was the .22250 that was a very popular round hear in Canada. It was used for long range varmint shooting. The only problem was the wind, so a lot of us were using .243 witch also was a tack driver. A hillbilly friend of mine was using the .22250 but had trouble in the wind on the long shots. So I lent him my .243 on a windy day, when he got back he went straight to the gun shop and picked up a .243. It is one of my favorite rounds, but hear on in PEI we have to stick to .22 cal for hunting so I use a .223 in a savage one with a 21" light barrel and one with a 26" heavy barrel for those long tack driving shots.

The main reason .276 Pederson did not get adopted is because of Macarther(excuse the spelling I'm not used to touch screens). John garand was also working on making a 30-06 rifle before the military trials. If im not mistaken most of the trial rifles were in .276

+james lamping Sort of. As I know it, the leading cartridge in the trials was the 276 and came very close to being adopted, generally being regarded as superior to 30-06. As you say, at the last moment the general intervened supposedly on the grounds of standardisation and logistics, with the army having recently tooled up for their machine guns and existing service rifles. As such, the trials were re-run with 30-06 Garands, resulting in the creation of the M2 Ball ammunition due to overpenetration and range safety concerns.

Stone's Garage -DFW Hornet is the only Centerfire .22. Besides, one might have thought Long Rifle, but xplodicon was wondering why the Hornet wasn't mentioned, since it is the largest .22 and with it's centerfire, a hybrid between the regular, well known .22 and the first "real" rifle cartridges... in my opinion.

Just get a Hunting License in Germany and you can own as many Firearms as you want. There are Hunters in Germany with huge Arsenals. The only thing is that you cant fire them in your Backyard or your Farm ^^ So, basically the differences between Germany and the USA relating to Firearm Ownership are pretty similar. You can even buy a 12,7x99 ( Metric System FTW ) in Germany without any Problem.

Question for you Wilko (French gun owner here): How are the German gun laws regarding the Cat. B guns (handguns and semi-auto rifles such AR, AK, etc...). In France we have a stupid 12 guns limits, and some calibers (such 5.56x45, 5.45x39, 7.62x39, 12.7x99 and 14.5 Russian) are falling in this category. So awesome You guys referenced the Savage 99 in .22 Cheetah. I own two 99's, one in .300 Savage and one in .22 Cheetah. Excellent rifles and I love them to death. Before I purchased my SoCom16, I handloaded my .300 Savage to be my ".308" for testing various bullets. It's actually quite similar to .308 case capacity so not a huge difference. Going back to the Cheetah though it is fun to shoot albeit more expensive than .223/5.56 but it just has character. Every time I range them people ask what the hell it is lol. All of my friends are into strictly ARs and polymer wonders and I love my ARs too but there is just something about a wood and steel lever gun that's twice as old as I am still functioning 100%. The craftsmanship is just something you don't really see these days; hell the Mag follower in my Savage 99 is solid brass, when's the last time you've seen that in a modern sporting rifle lol. The .222 Remington, also known as the triple deuce, triple two, and treble two, is a centerfire rifle cartridge. Introduced in 1950, it was the first commercial rimless .22 (5.56 mm) cartridge made in the United States. This came out before the .223 and 5.56. It was the precursor to these cartridges. Eugene Stoner experimented with it on early M16a1. also the .222 swift and 22-250 came out in the 30's.

I have my father's .218 Bee varmit rifle from the early 1950's. The .222 came out around the same time, so the .218 never enjoyed the same degree of fame. It is still a good round for shooting small game and varmits, particularly when using semi-jacketed hollow point ammo.

You're wrong about arms confiscation in the USSR. During and right after the red revolution arms were confiscated from the rural peasants but this had to be partially rescinded because of how important rifles were in feeding and protecting the rural population so the ban on hunting rifles was rolled back. All military style arms and hand guns were still prohibited for civilian use and confiscated.

Those 30-06 accelerator's were NO joke. For anyone curious, I chrono'd a box of .308 and 30-06. Average 308 velocity was 3200 FPS. .30-06 was a staggering..4300 FPS. LOL. The 30-06 ones made the LOUDEST crack I have EVER heard.

I was not going to leave a comment initially, I actually wanted to see if I was the only one that felt like Eric needed to stop interrupting his partner there, and stop talking over top of him when he tries to make a point. Not only is it irritating but it makes me want to unsubscribe honestly, if you can't get past that. ............You may be the boss, I don't know, but if you are the boss then you really need to work on your management skills because that's just weak. Not that we don't love to hear what you have to say, just let somebody else talk as well, they might have good information that you need to stop interrupting them from communicating. I love 22-250 it's the greatest predator/varmit round because the trajectory is completely flat out out to 400 yards

it is a great cartridge. but if i remember right, shooting a 55gr federal v shock, my round would drop 1inch at 250m. hence i would zero my rifle 1inch high at 100m. still a very fast flat round.👍

I remember going to the Kentucky state fair with my dad when I was 5 years old (1963) and there were booths where you would actually shoot .22 shorts at moving steel ducks and goats. As I recall, you had to be 12 or older, so I just had to watch my dad.

Ok. If it says 556 then it can shoot anything. But if you get a 22LR then it will only shoot 22LRs and not 223s. Its kind of confusing but its not that hard.

Hi guys, good show today, you got me thinking about a rifle I owned back in the late 60s early 70s it was a Lee Enfield with a Parker Hale barrel of 250 cal., and using the 303 brass = 303 250 This was an Australian conversion something to do with military calibres being illegal for sporting use there. I used this rifle for a few years with dear hear in N.Z. I used "River Brand" ammo and found it to be a very good flat shooting rifle . I often wish I still had it, must have sat unused too long at some stage.

I'm honestly really surprised you didn't talk about the .22 hornet. That round was released in 1930 and was based off the black powder .22 wcf from the late 1800s. It is a very similar round in comparison to the .223 and the 5.56 and I believe birthed those rounds. It is a very popular hunting round. It has a 45 grain bullet and I couldn't tell you how big the case is but it packs a punch and sends that bullet flying really fast. That's why it's a popular round for hunting, and I have heard story's about it being used for hunting deer. I think that's a bit too far but it probably is capable in the hands of an experienced hunter. Keep up the good work. I love the channel👍👍👍👍👍👍

I built a 7 twist 22-250 that'll sling 95 grain sierras. The sierras and the Berger 90 grain are just awesome looking. And excellent ballistics with minimal recoil. I love the ultra fast 22s

Doug Fowler yes, obviously in the US it's hard to find because there's also not real interest. The .223 is slightly faster and widely available. But in Europe, it's still used by hunters like .243, 6.5x55 or .308, .30-06 and then easily available in stores.

Eric did not put effort into preparation. There are no anchor points in this talk - just anecdotes in no particular order. The 22s has a few distinctive lines (22short, 22lr line, 223 line, 220Russian etc) that would have helped to organize this much better.

Learning about calibers is like learning English. There is often no rhyme or reason to it and there are rules that are routinely broken. There are professionals who have been working with guns for decades who are still learning.

i remember about 10 years ago a friend left me borrow his .22 Hornet with hand load . at about 250 yards i shot a ground hog with this rifle . wow did it do some damage to the chest area . i was really impress with it. it seemed just as powerful as a .223 even though over all a lot smaller round. and the accuracy was right on .

I have an old prototype press from Fred Huntington , Rock chucker prototype , before 1943 , Grand Dad used to swage out 22 brass for 219 improved zipper and his 222 Wilson. also have some of the dies. I guess the modern 22 cal. cartridges have replaced all of those old wildcats.

.22 Hornet..222 and .223 were variants (wildcats) based on. 22 Hornet, the long range squirrel rifle round. In Vietnam, GIs were found dead with their .223 M16s pulled down to fix malfunctions. 5.56mm is the Mil Spec round used in the new chamber design for the M16 A1.
