In this video, we take the "How Far" concept to extreme long range with the diminutive 22LR. We use the Vudoo Gun Works Three60 setup with an Element Nexus 5-20x50mm FFP optic and a TacomHQ Macro Charlie Tarac to get us out to 677 yards. Will the 22LR have enough energy to pass the "pine board test" at long range? Find out with us.

It is actually less accurate. The round crosses transonic barrier pretty close up 200yards. Keeping it close to subsonic the 22lr is a better distance round.
@Dav-S5658
@Dav-S5658 2 жыл бұрын
In my experience, the 22 mag is much less accurate than other rimfires like the .17 HMR and the 22LR shooting standard velocity. Within it's accuracy envelope though, is very deadly! It is one of the most overlooked cartridges out there for defensive purposes. Forget about the pistols though, it is a rifle cartridge. Out of a short barrel you are better off using .22 LR.
@Ironpine27
@Ironpine27 2 жыл бұрын
@@Dav-S5658 Quite the contrary actually, 22lr out of a pistol is nothing compared to 22mag, which is surprisingly effective coming out of a short barrel. Penetration is nearly three times better, potentially making 22wmr hollow points a viable self-defense cartridge, whereas a 22lr hollow point's penetration would be too pitiful to trust your life to.
@wildrangeringreen
@wildrangeringreen 2 жыл бұрын
@@nicholascapozzi1613 depends on the rate of twist and consistency of the ammunition (like with .22LR, most .22WMR rifles are twisted to just barely stabilize the bullets they'e shooting, and marginally stable projectiles have more issues with turbulence than properly stabilized ones do). There really aren't any commercially loaded .22WMR match-quality loads out there, since the cartridge was meant to be a hunting cartridge. Because it is transonic at a relatively short range (compared to most smokeless cf rifle cartridges), it has trouble competing with standard velocity .22LR at the normal distances .22LR competitions are held at. The added velocity does help overcome wind and atmospheric variations at longer range (500-1000 yards), however; and that is where .22WMR is better than a .22LR. The added velocity comes with it's drawbacks (even when talking about .22LR HV), you just have to decide if they're worth it to get the benefit of better trajectory and reduced wind drift, ect at the distances you're shooting (.22LR HV isn't really worth it, IMO, but it's what's commonly available). There are several vids out there of people hand loading .22WMR to shoot 1000 yards, and having good success with it.

Range finder for unmarked, not predetermined distance is of utmost importance. Wind is your most challenging. Wind at position across 600 to 1200 yards and at target differ at times. This coming from someone who shoots 308 at only 1050 yards regularly at present, (all the distance I can find in these hills, but usually every other day as long as I have components).

Again, I appreciate the information about the .22. Now, my 16.5 inch barrel on my AR-15-22 isn’t going to carry that far, but for its purpose and expected range, it will do the job. Very impressive shooting and presentation.

From past experience back in the late '70s early '80s most all my friends WOULDN'T DREAM of shooting at a deer even with a high-powered rifle & scope further than 100 -150 yards That said I've taking deer out to a 1,000 yds more than once and GROUNDHOGS /COYOTES @ 7-800 yards With multiple calibers and or rifles ranging from 243 up to 300 WINCHESTER SHORT MAG All of that said and considering myself a VERY GOOD SHOT that 22 RIG is TREMENDOUS as for myself I've taken GROUNDHOGS /COYOTE at 250+ yds with my Ruger 10/22 with a straight 4-power scope and thought I'd done something thought wrong I guess love the video

I have an old Winchester single shot .22 caliber bolt action rifle, with a 27" barrel. In my youth, I prided myself with the accuracy and the distance I could get with lead jacketed ammo. The best I managed was breaking a beer bottle at the town dump within two shots. I duplicated the distance a total of four times, (8 shots) ... a distance of 140 yards, with iron sights. That rifle has been legendary in that I once took it with me while a friend was hunting dove in season with a 410 shotgun. He laughed about me bringing my .22 while he was dove hunting. I lifted it, fired a shot into the air, in the direction of a dove flying across the sky .... and hit it, knocking it out of the air. It was stupid to be firing a .22 into the air ... but I wasn't too concerned as we were in the middle of the desert with the closest structure, probably 30 miles away.

Before I watched ur video, I guessed about a1/2 mile, so about 800 yards. The .22 is a very under rated caliber as it is brutal against soft targets! Squirrels raccoons possums stray dogs and cats birds snakes burglars.

The lesson re: heavy bullets at modest velocity has been re-confirmed by generation after generation since rifles (even smoothbore muskets) were used in war. If you'd like a good PhD level education on the subject, the writings of Elmer Keith & John Linebaugh can't be beat. The short version "In external ballistics, velocity is a constantly diminishing variable. Caliber and bullet weight are constant." Once lead is up to velocity, it is HARD to slow down!!

It's crazy how such small changes at these ranges affect a .22 LR. A fairly standard shot for any larger center fire rifle. One of the reasons .22 LR is a fun round. Really can work on marksmanship with shorter ranges.
