Thanks for the nice video Mark. Just a quick explanation of why I chose to use the welded wire fire grate rather than a sheet metal punched out style. It all comes down to weight. The welded wire grate is about half as heavy as a sheet metal version. I realize the air flow may be high for some circumstances however I figured one can easily implement some technique to lesson the air flow when needed by lining the floor with a layer or two of small horizontal sticks prior to ignition. Sure the sticks will burn to coals quite quickly but as long as they are not Disturbed they should still serve to block some airflow at least until they burn completely ash. Thanks again Mark! cheers everyone 👍😎

Hi Steve. Thanks for commenting. In my next video I talk about how ash build up slows airflow and allows coals to build up.

Always enjoy watching your videos, I use my FB Scout weekly. Rarely take out my FB gen2 or Nano anymore. Speaking of windbreaks…if you ever buy meals from Good Foods meals to your door, they come with a large piece of reflective cardboard that folds up to fit in a backpack and a huge heavy freezer pack to keep for cool….I always like find new uses for stuff we would normally through away or recycle

I'm late watching this one, Mark, but, by now, I can pretty much predict how a wood stove will perform by the size of the burn chamber, size, number, and location of inlet holes, and height of the pot above the stove body, combined with how much space is allowed for the flame to exit the stove and escape from under the pot. This one's a winner for a quick boil, but needs less air flow for baking and grilling. A damper system, restricting the air flow under the burn grate, above the ash pan would help immensely, but impede a quick startup unless it was easily deployed, probably as a slide-in option. I might consider the simple titanium unit. My Nano in titanium is a good boiler, but doesn't hold the grate solidly for grilling, and the holes in the floor of the burn chamber are huge!
@MarkYoungBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
Your observations are spot on. There is much to like about the Freestyle but slowing the burn is a challenge. Steve says the choice of open fire grate was about weight. I am working on some hacks to get more out of it. Wood choice and how it is loaded, especially in the larger configurations can help. I am also experimenting with things that can be added to the stove as well to slow things down. Thanks for commenting

Yeah, I commented about that grate on the first show. For sure this’ll be something to use splits in, I think. If I could get the family more into camping, I think I’d get this as a package in steel, because they just car camp, and it would save so much space in the car. But for me, I think I may upgrade to the original in titanium. It’s a nice, relatively big stove, but pretty light. So it would serve most things, and my nano would serve if I gotta go real light, but I think for someone who doesn’t have any yet, it would be a great idea to get one.
@MarkYoungBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
I am really liking the size of this stove and am looking forward to getting a single in titanium. Steve says the open grate is all about weight. In my next video I talk about how ash build up appears to slow combustion. Thanks for commenting Jim
@jimf19642 жыл бұрын
@@MarkYoungBushcraft Yeah, like the fire pit you used. I was wondering if that would happen, but I’ll be curious to see how a sustained fire handles it. Will it slow it down too much, for example.

Like you Mark I’ve ordered the titanium single version in the kickstarter for the same reasons. I love the 5 inch but the stainless steel is just too heavy to take backpacking. I also love the Nano. It’s great for alcohol stove’s especially, but I do find with wood, the small chamber makes it difficult to keep a fire going unless you do a Swedish fire torch. The titanium version of the Freestyle I think should solve most of my issues in using a wood stove whilst backpacking.

I agree. It is the sweet spot in size. Maybe it should be called the "Goldilocks" stove instead😅. Thanks for commenting

Re the SOL Plasma Light, will it light an alcohol burner?

Indirectly. Getting the contact points close enough to the alcohol would be a challenge. I keep a short piece of string with my stoves that I dip in the alcohol, light and use it to light them up. Thanks for commenting

I have two of the firebox stoves. The regular stainless steel snd the nano. Love them both. I use the stainless steel regular one at home to grill on my small patio. It’s great to cook outside in a hot day. A full sized grill won’t fit on my patio so I have to pull it out into the parking lot into full sun on the blacktop to use it. Not fun on a hot day unless it’s a tritip I can just leave to cook. But I’ve made breakfast on the firebox on my patio. Snd got camping it’s great too. I do t have to buy the expensive wood that campgrounds sell for three times the cost. I can gather twigs snd make everything I need snd I feel I can control the heat better than my Coleman stove that has only two modes, burn and off. Lol 😂

Great video, thank you! How well do you think this stove would do if you top lit the fire? I like to top lite the few wood stoves I have, usually I can load them up once, lite them, go do stuff and then come back to boiling water. This stove looks to be a good size for doing that......
@MarkYoungBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video. I have been doing some testing with top lit fires in this stove and it works great. I usually pre-load my fuel in a vertical stack. Once the fuel catches it will really take off due to the high amount of airflow. I even see some secondary combustion (but not pyrolysis) through the holes on the sides. Thanks for commenting

Hi Mark Greetings from Newfoundland. That looks like a very cool stove I was debating whether to get a firebox stove or a bush box I ran across a new stove on eBay from boundless voyage It's called the x dragon horse titanium folding stove Very similar to a bush box but has a really cool Base for it It seems amazing and I can't wait to try it out I encourage you to check it out I think you would like it and I would love to see you do a video on it Take care

I tried the stove out today Worked really well with wood so then I tried charcoal and it worked beautifully that way It has great airflow and the way it connects with the base negates any warping I think The little grill on top is perfect for grilling a burger or small steak

You mentioned grilling and roasting. As one of the many who use a frying pans and pots on stoves like these what are your thoughts on those methods of cooking food on the the freestyle stoves?
@MarkYoungBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
The Freestyle is well suited for use with all types of pots and pans including cast iron. It is a matter of matching the vessel to the stove configuration. I have a couple of videos coming showing different pots and pans in use. Thanks for commenting

@@MarkYoungBushcraft Nice, that answers a couple of my questions. I have one additional concern is the grate at the bottom being open the way it is. No damper also In my area that could be an issue if you don't have an existing park provided fire pit.. That's If they do that at all. The wind would blow hot ashes onto dry kindle on the ground causing an external fire that could spread causing a larger ground fire.. The nano used with the bottom out for swedish fire is also illegal for the same reasons. Lack of a bottom solid damper type plate may be an issue. I’d have to fashion some sort of base plate out of a solid piece of sheet metal There some parks where they would be legal. Some of the state parks,riverbanks and lakes.. I'm curious to see your solutions as both pellets and chunk charcoal are my preferred methods of cooking fuel. Thanks.

I have most things that Firebox make or sell so obviously a big fan. As much as I would like to purchase the full kit as the octagon set up really appeals to me i feel the price (Titanium definitely) is sadly beyond my pocket, I’m not saying it’s overpriced. I’m glad Mark mentioned the cost as I thought it might only be me having to let this one go. I will for now make the most of the FB gear I already own.

Good eye Deborah. The new freestyle stove has stiffening ribs formed into the surface of each panel which allowed us to save some weight by using lighter weight materials. That's how we were able to get its pack weight down below it's competitors of the same size
