My review Having watched and read about this cook kit I decided I needed one. Have owned the 10" frying pan cowboy plate and thinner plate for about 3 wks. Followed the instructions and tried an egg..(stuck) Seasoned it another 15 times on the hob..set the fire alarm off twice lol. Now been using it near everyday indoors .. couple of times outside. Works great . Not as non stick as teflon but who wants that nowadays. Used the pan to cook over 15 dishes and love it..can even put it in the oven. Would of liked the bag , but it's so expensive her in the UK.. Would also like the pizza stone but that isn't available also here.. So stick with it guys it will become non stick in time..the bottom inside becomes near black in colour.. I'm happy with my purchase. cost £72 for the 3 pans . Thank you Steve 👍🏽

Seasoned my small kit 5 times over in my oven, both the frying pan and the dutch lid. Worked great. I have always used some kind of lid over my frying pans when preparing a steak outdoors, as I like it well done and also like to conserve fuel when using a alcohol burner, liquid fuel- or canister stove. Been using a tin plate for that. This kit provides more room under the dutch lid, so I can add more vegetables and stuff I'd like to just simmer on top of the steak when it is close to done. Using the dutch lid also help conserving fuel. Love it! Btw; I only used olive oil and coconut oil (alternated) for the seasoning, no spray.

The best way to keep food from sticking and simultaneously develop a good seasoning, is to heat the pan dry until it is hot, then add *cold* oil to the hot pan. This works because the pores of the metal open when the pan is hot and empty, then, when the cold oil hits it, the pores contract and grab the oil, this fills the pores up with oil making a smooth seasoned surface and making it non stick. The hot pores of the pan contracting around the cold oil is the exact same reason food sticks, the expanded pores contract when in contact with cold food, thus grabbing the food and making it stick. This effect happens less when the pores are already filled with oil. An additional thing to do is season the oil with salt before placing the food in there, the salt acts like ball bearings, reducing sticking and making everything taste good, win win. Adding cold oil, to a cold pan then heating them both together is less effective at preventing sticking because the pores of the metal have not contracted around the oil, so when you add cold food, the pores contract and grab the food even with oil in the mix.

I also notice that heating the pan up, removing from heat and adding butter till its melted (not burning) helps as well. Once back on the heat I believe the water in the butter creates a temporary layer of hot gas for eggs not to stick until they quickly set.

@@fireboxstove Thank you for responding! I just seasoned them both, and there are some spots in the pans that are like dark little bubbles. I used some Pam spray for the lecithin and avocado oil. I like the notion of being able to use/treat it like I do my cast iron, but, with the weight savings for hauling it around out of doors. For stainless steel, get it good and hot, rub some coconut oil/wipe off (a few times). When hot, a drop of water begins to dance on the surface like mercury does on a smooth surface.

@fireboxstove2 жыл бұрын
When I say two step process what I mean is that you need to go through the process of applying light coats of oil then cooking that oil to a temperature which causes polymerization then repeat several times the second part of the process is actually using your pan which is continually building the seasoning layer 👍😎 the pans also come with detailed instructions.

If you get it just a little hotter the old seasoning will flake off. You can also use vinegar to soften the old seasoning. Personally I would just leave it how it is and keep seasoning it and keep using it. Everything will eventually work itself out.

Just picked up my order with the small skillet. New to seasoning. Doing it now as the instructions from Firebox that came along. 1. Handwash cleaned with soap and lukewarm water. 2. Dried it with soft towel. 3. Put it 30 minutes on 250 C in oven 4. Went to supermarket to buy canola oil (I had only walnut oil, sunflower and extra virgin olive oil and canola seemed better after some research). 5. Made the layer with canola oil and dried it with paper 6. Skillet is upside down in the oven now for 1 hr on 250 C (max for my microwave oven) 7. Waiting now.. Edit: 8. Took it out and let it cool down. 9. Put the oil again and put the skillet on my stove untill I saw the smoke. Repeated this quite a few times. 10. Decided to throw an egg in. Big mistake. It's a skillet and not my regular frying pan. Not enough oil and the pan was way to hot so it stickes awfully and thought I messed up my new skillet. Cleaned it. 11. Tried again. Failed again another egg. 12. More oil. Less heat. Now it went fine! Not sure if what I did was right but I'm ready to use it on my next adventure.

Funny, my home pans are basically treated like that, but never thought about doing that with camping stuff. I suppose that's partly because I use camp stuff way less than my home pans.

I noticed the instructions that came with the pan advise to bake at 500 for an hour rather than half hour as indicated here and on the product page online. Which is better in your experience? Thanks!

The hour for the first seasoning and then the half hour for maintenance seasoning when needed. Thanks for watching!

My pan set arrived. Are there anyway to season them without oven? Thank you.
@fireboxstove5 жыл бұрын
You can use anything that will get the temp up to over 500 degrees. Oven is the best though if you can. A grill would work though as well. Let me know if you need any other help. Cheers!

I bought gen 2 firebox and teh extra grill plate warped altho i used it twice only, I only set the grillplate before grilling, and never under fire only under charcoal. How do i prevent this in the f uture?
@fireboxstove5 жыл бұрын
It's a little like a fry pan on the stove needs to have food in it to regulate its temperature. If you keep food on it you should be good. If the temperature is hot enough to warp the grill plate you will definitely be burning your food.

What material is that pan? I’m guessing there isnt a nonstick coating on it since youre talking about seasoning?
@fireboxstove4 жыл бұрын
Correct, it is hard anodized aluminum 👍
@Minsang1st4 жыл бұрын
Firebox Stove how does that material stand with metal utensils or simply lasting over time? Any scratches or wear and tear over time? Also how does it compare to stainless steel? I like stainless frying pan for its durability, but it sticks like crazy and is hard to clean without a lot of water which I hate. From the video, it seems like the pan seasons pretty well and doesn’t stick a lot, but I’m curious about its durability over time.

Great product and presentation, Steve! What size skillet would work best for the firebox nano stove?
@fireboxstove4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. The small one is a 8" and works great with it but the large 10" works as well. It depends on the amount of people you are cooking for. I would say the 8" Frying Pan is for 1-2 people and no more than that. I hope that helps.

So with these pans after you are done cooking do you have to bring your heat up to smoke point every time you cook with it? Also how long would you reccomend using the non stick spray? I know you said until seasoning has finish developing but how do you know when that is exactly? Thanks steve!
@fireboxstove5 жыл бұрын
You don't have to bring it up to a smoke point every time, doing that just polymerizes more oil. Not doing just doesn't do that, it won't hurt anything though. Use the no-stick spray until you don't feel like you need it anymore. Hope that helps, thank you!

Got the kit yesterday. Followed the instructions, but end result was blotches of almost rust colored spots. I sent a msg. To fireboxstove asking for suggestions. Used virgin olive oil btw
@fireboxstove3 жыл бұрын
If the color was fairly light your temperature is not hot enough. Being blotchy means you're leaving too much oil on the pan. Not to worry you can't ruin a seasoning job just keep doing it. I do recommend using multiple kinds of oils. You'll notice that each kind of oil you use behaves just a little bit differently. Same rule of thumb for all oils wipe it on then wipe it back off. Many very thin layers is better than less thicker layers. Increase the heat until the color becomes quite dark not quite black. I would recommend using a toaster oven and you can stack up your pans. I stack all my pans up all with a light coat of oil and put them in the toaster oven after each trip👍
@beartug3 жыл бұрын
@@fireboxstove thanks Toaster oven is not an option. With oven I kept it at 500, so I don't think it was a matter of temperature. I will retry using different oil and (less of it) will also reduce bake time to about 30 minute. I assume that ultimately, the pan should be black in color after fully seasoned? Thanks again for your support

I have thrown away my new firebox pan, because I was not able to get a smooth nonsticking surface. Bought a GSI nonstick teflon pan instead. I dont want to hassle around. Just cook something, clean it fast and easy and walk on.
@fireboxstove2 жыл бұрын
Different things work better for different people and different situations. The non-stick pans are very convenient and easy however some people really appreciate the ability to season their pans and have very good success with it. But you are right it does require an investment of time and a development of technique while the non-stick option is ready to go from the very beginning. I don't like knowing that a customer may be less than 100% satisfied please contact my customer service department so that we can work something out with you. Thank you very much for expressing your feedback 🙏

ibb.co/Y2jC18t ibb.co/zXG3ZgW Followed seasoning instructions. 500 degrees is obviously too hot (I've only used cast iron and lots of success). Could not clean pans up to original. Never ruined a set of pans before I got to even see how they preformed. I guess Aluminum is not for me
@fireboxstove4 жыл бұрын
I don't see anything ruined. I don't think it's even possible to ruin your pans. Just keep seasoning them. If 500 degrees seems too hot then do it at a lower temperature. Seasoning pans is not a science, more of an art. All ovens run a bit differently. If it's not for you send us an email to info at Firebox stove.com and we'll give you a refund.
