An offhand guess about the vortex deflection: hot fluids have a lower viscosity (this is why some of the old Ford engines didn't have cooling passages around the exhaust ports: while a lower exhaust port temp would theoretically lead to a lower pressure, the lower viscosity from the uncooled exhaust would still evacuate the gasses faster (yes, it's a bit of an edge case, but it worked)) and your vortex ring has a very low specific heat, so it picks up the flame heat quickly enough to cause that side of the vortex to accelerate.

it's quite interesting to see that the fireball remains in a sort of bloom with nice rounded edges (like flames unaffected by gravity) and then either after the internal (i would assume electromagnetic) forces have less generation as fuel depletes, or that the vortex interrupts this process that the edges of the fireball begin to fray and behave more like what we expect from a typical flame

Hi there! Quick question here. At 8:29 is the vortex catching fire right at the "muzzle" or is it reflecting (how???) the flame above it? Would this last case be some kind of internal reflexion inside the thoroid? Now I can't help wondering... Thanks for another amazing experiment!

You are atomizing the air when spitting and vortex just adds to the chaos of the flame
@felixpellerin77416 жыл бұрын
Also, the misting also makes the particles smaller, so its easyer for the fire to heat them up and get to the flahs point because it has less thermal mass

I would have never guessed that it would deflect. The vortex probably picks up thermal energy but the speed is probably slower. The vortex gets destabilized as it passes through, giving up its O to the reaction and running into turbulence from the flame. Just my thoughts tho.

Hey. It is very interesting. Try to shoot carbon dioxide. This will be the beginning of the development of techniques for extinguishing oil fires. Can you show a new physical phenomenon?
@MettaMiner6 жыл бұрын
On the topic of why the toroid accelerates, I can't give you an exact answer because it's pretty hard to analyze something like this, but whenever flow changes direction, the reason is pressure. It is often helpful to consider how the pressure in flow field changes. My guess is that the pressure on the outer ends of the toroid increases as a result of heating up. I could also be thinking about this entirely wrong because like I said, there is a lot going on there.

Flames cast shadows?! This is confusing because you can shine a laser beam through a flame and there is no apparent dimming of the light. I'm going to have to check out the video about this to understand whats going on. This is why I love this channel and others line it. There are always surprising things that you need to study closer to understand whats really going on. Thanks for the great video!
@TrollFaceTheMan6 жыл бұрын
They cast shadows in very specific circumstances, the type of light will affect it too. For example Blue light will be more likely to scatter more when passing through a flame then red light. But keep in mind it's not the light casting a shadow but the disturbances from the gasses. Photons can't typically interact. The other way they can cast shadows is by having elements in the flame that absorb the light and either re-emit it in all directions or simply absorb it and convert it into heat.

I must be wrong, but the vortex extinguishes the fire in my opinion. Could that be?
@TrollFaceTheMan6 жыл бұрын
There were some points in which the vortex would extinguish and others where it helped. Much like blowing on a small fire helps it but blowing on a candle will likely put it out. If it hit when the fuel was almost depleted it put it out, if it hit right in the mass of the spray it flared typically.

I hate when people say that safety is the number one priority. If that was true you wouldn't be doing the thing that is potentially unsafe. Safety is, at best, second.
@TrollFaceTheMan6 жыл бұрын
GTX Machine, safty is number uno when it comes to doing the dangerous thing. It's like if a car manufacturer says they prioritize safety of their passengers. By the logic you are trying to argue then that also is not true for them to say as the safest thing you could probably do is sit in a padded room of your house and never leave. Therby unless they could make said car as safe as said padded room then they can't say anything about prioritizing safety because it is always going to be inherently less safe than the safest thing you could do. In otherwords saying anyone prioritizes safety at any point ever would then just become a simple lie. So what it comes down to is semantics of implied reasoning (Reffering to the statement. ) You are inherently right if you take it in the sense of we are saying "We prioritize safety as number 1 of everything." But the unspoken part is "We prioritize safety as number 1 when it comes to us doing this dangerous act we are doing..." We are not saying what we are doing is safe but instead that we are trying to do it safely as we can. If that makes sense?

About those old "pyro system" projects people used to make, which were wrist mounted, hand controlled, flamethrowers, the obvious choice used to be butane and people made all sorts of mechanisms for valve control. But I always disliked the safety hazards that could arrive from something leaking. What if someone made a pyro system based around pressurized mineral oil being misted in spray nozzles and then ignited? Would make for some cool fireballs with much less fire hazard I think
