It aired Friday night for a while until it was changed to another night without warning. Kind of weird fact here: Jubal Early isn't just a made-up name. I remember Joss Whedon saying in an interview that this series was at least partially inspired by the book "The Killer Angels" a novel about the American Civil War. Jubal Early is the name of a Confederate General, so I'd imagine that's where the name for this character came from.
@ernesthakey33967 ай бұрын
Yep - in fact Jubal Early was supposedly one of Nathan Fillion's ancestors. The general Jubal Early was partially deaf in one ear, and they used that here, which is why Jubal Early misheard a couple things Simon said.

There is a lot more to Anara and her story. The complications are real, but no spoilers. They did show some important points about Jayne. For example, one of the reasons he focuses on money is because his family is in real need of help. He sends it to his mother, I think the mention that in The Message. We really needed a few seasons. But information has come out. But, again, no spoilers. Some answers come from the movie. One of my favorite series! Good job on your reactions.

You have to stick with it for the first 5 episodes, don’t judge it, and I guarantee that it will pay off big time. It just takes off and keeps growing, stronger and stronger. So many amazing characters, and the story line is rich.

Fox owns/owned the rights to the show. The movie Serenity was made through Universal Studios, but now with the Fox and Disney merger I believe if any other or new Firefly production for TV, streaming or a movie would have to be made through Disney. A few months ago, there were rumors that Disney was looking to reboot the show for Disney Plus. However, if that were to happen it would be a complete reboot with an entirely new cast, and Joss would not be involved more than likely. I also heard they were thinking of making it more "family friendly" which I have no idea how that would work. Without the original cast or the original people involved with the production I wouldn't be that interested in a new series if they decided to reboot it.
@sirmoonslosthismind7 ай бұрын
the cast and crew found out while making _the message_ that it was the last episode they would ever make. there was no advance notice and no chance to wrap anything up. the most the creative team could do was to reorder the last few episodes in post-production, even moving scenes between episodes, so as to avoid going out on such a low note. they actually created a minor continuity error in the process. in _the message_ jayne calls river a "mind-reading genius" but in _objects in space_ jayne is genuinely surprised by the idea that river might read minds. this only makes sense in the original order.

Jayne is one of my favorite characters. He’s the best fighter on the ship, hand-to-hand or with weapons, even more than the two war veterans. He isn’t stupid and he’s one of the most predictable characters because he is above all a survivor. You could count on Jayne doing what was best for Jayne. But he has feelings. He likes KayLee more than anyone knows, waiting outside the infirmary when she got shot, and teasing when he sees her feelings for the doctor. He starts to soften though after the Mudder sacrifices himself for him and after Mal spares him in the airlock. Jayne also has many of the best one-liners.

Fox owns Firefly, not Joss Whedon. In fact, a few years ago in an interview Nathan was asked what he'd do if he won the CA lottery which was at like 300 mil. He said that he'd buy the rights to Firefly and remake it. Fans started sending him money, Fox issued a press release saying it wasn't for sale. My favorite idea I've seen so far now that it's 20+ years later, The story picks up and Mal is still captain of Serinity with his 1st mate which is now Zoey & Wash's child. That feels like the most natural direction the show could go after so long a period. I don't know who would or wouldn't still be on the ship, but I'm sure they all (except Book) could appear in individual episodes even if they're not main cast.

“The River Tam Sessions” was a series of webisodes released before the movie “Serenity,” to promote the film and lay some groundwork. If you watch them before the movie, *PLEASE* watch them in release order. Someone rearranged them in chronological order, which is not how they were intended to be viewed. When viewed in the original order of release, it’s more impactful, because the last mini-episode released gives you a callback to the first one released.

I have re-watched this show so many times, but only in your edit caught up that River saw Simon say "I would be there right now" initially, and that is exactly what he said to Kayle later on after the meeting in the dinning room. So in that instance she was seeing the future, with others it was past I think. But then again when she picked up the gun, my interpretation is that she was readying to face Early, even though she herself wasn't 100% aware of it.

This was an interesting episode. I notice that when people watch this episode for the first time, they rarely question River "becoming" Serenity! I don't think I have ever seen anyone in reactions or otherwise, suggest that Jubal was a psychic. But after you mentioned it, it did click. I don't think he was, or at least not to the level that River was, but maybe...? And that is something. I don't know that this "intellectual property" is owned by JW or that this is the reason for no more Firefly episodes. Otherwise it may have gone the way of the movie Dogma. However, through the years, the actors have changed, though they are all still very close and still very awesome! I think any new series could not be a reboot nor a continuation. I think it would be better off as a spinoff of sorts... Even a prequel with younger actors, starting with the last year of the war. BSG tried that with Caprica and it did not work for them, although I thought the series was great, for some reason it didn't get the same reception. I'm concerned that this would also be the case for a prequel, which is why a spinoff seems most reasonable. Same theme though!! Just a thought! Thanks for taking us along on your journey! Looking forward to the movie!

Before it ever aired it was fated to be canceled. The executive that replaced the one that greenlit the series plotted to have it canceled. He sabotaged the ADs for the series before it aired having them misrepresent the type of show. He had them make a new first episode. He intentionally aired episodes out of order. He had the slot for the show to be changed without notice to the viewers. Finally, the series was canceled. After the notice of cancellation, they aired the 2-hour pilot, and the remaining episodes were televised to those in Britain over the summer. The rest of the world had to wait for the DVD release to see all the episodes and in the correct order. Disney owns the rights to this show currently and has looked at reviving it but currently has had a series of financial failures that have cost them many billions cause of their absolute insistence in pushing DEI over good storytelling.

Regarding a couple of the statements characters made in River’s mind; Book seemed to be interrogating someone, an allusion to his past (before he was a shepherd). Inara’s (“I’m a big girl, just tell me”), I think was directed at whoever gave her the diagnosis of her fatal illness, a major factor in her reluctance to get attached to Mal, and why she left the prestigious House where she plied her trade (as mentioned by Nandi in “Heart of Gold,” going out on the road, so to speak. The cancellation of the series mid-season meant neither of those premises would get a chance to be explored further.

The main reason it was cancelled was that it was very, very expensive to produce. For broadcast TV, it was almost guaranteed to lose money. The original Star Trek series also struggled to make money despite decent ratings, also due to a huge budget to overcome. And that show had a proven star, Shatner, and Lucille Ball backing the show with full belief. Therefore, for Firefly, they'd have to commit a huge budget before knowing what would be filmed. Hence the two pilot controversy. Ep 1 & 2 Also, at the time, people forget that a lot of people don't like sci-fi at all. But today, with streaming and nerd culture being mainstream, it could've been a hit.

I have long advocated Firefly- the Next Generation. Tiny spoiler- Zoe is pregnant at the end of the movie. If Kaylee and Simon get together, they would have a mob of kids. Mal and 'Nara too. So that's a basic crew. Add some new replacements, and anybody from the old crew that has a week "at liberty", they could do a guest shot, or travel with ths ship for a while. A Firefly reboot of some kind is a rumor that keeps coming around- the last time was about a year ago. Disney bought Fox, they now own the rights. It got as far as the "press release" stage- Disney announced that they were working on it, it was in the negotiating stages. The only hard fact was that they said, "No connection with Joss Whedon." Nothing came of it...

After the third season, Sci-fi could not afford to make more seasons. So it was going to end but thanks to the die hard fans, the convinced Jeff Bezos to pick it up and finish the series. The story arc, the production quality, the acting quality are all fantastic. The Expnase: What would life be like if humans lived on Mars, and worked out in the asteroid belt and be as realistic as possible. No phasers. No Force Fields. No artificial gravity: there is only gravity on a ship when the engines are on. Ships are like building, always flying up at 1/3G. Halfway to destination, flip 180 degrees, and start slowing down at 1/3G. The show will have you on the edge of your seat in one moment, and crying in the next.

The accusations about Joss Weadon have never been proven, it was FOX who owned the rights to the show, so it's not Joss Weadon who held it up or locked it down ...it was FOX ... and in fact, Joss spent years trying to figure out how to resurrect the show, but they wouldn't release it to anyone. However, they didn't own the movie rights to it, so that's how he and the Browncoats, who insisted on it so much and for so long, managed to get the movie made. So, you really need to stop assuming that people are guilty until you KNOW that. Otherwise, you are playing into their game and giving them power they don't deserve. As far as I'm concerned, until someone actually proves ... beyond the shadow of a doubt ... that he's guilty of ANYTHING, I'll continue to love and celebrate his works.

River is NOT reading their minds. She is seeing some of the most profound memories each of them have. We know where Jaynes memory came from, and Simon's. Mal's most traumatic memory is, after the Battle of Serenity Valley, he questions his faith in God. The conclusion he came to was "None of it means a damned thing." Inara's most profound memory was always going to be revealed by Joss Whedon in season 2 or 3, but we never got there. After you watch Serenity I'll tell you what she meant by "I'm a big girl. Just tell me." It explains a lot.

If you like Mandy Patinkin, you should try "Dead Like Me".

I don't think River is outright reading minds, nothing we saw from the Shepherd would allow for him to think "he doesn't give half a hump that she's innocent" I think it's some "reading" mixed with paranoia. Remember she can't block out feelings but it's not exact

Or shes reading a part of his mind that was meant to foreshadow his eventual reveal of his darker and amoral past

Did you not catch that Jayne was sending most of his money to his mom?

It's Fox that owns the rights to Firefly, and they don't license anything because if they can't make the big bucks off it, nobody can. Fox was bought by Disney, and there were rumours of them bringing back Firefly in some form, but I think they might've shelved that because of the issues with Joss Whedon.

It's a fantastic episode, not the best but still fantastic. I'm sorry that it was the last. Ending with Heart of Gold would have been a more apt ending. That being said, Serenity brings things to an end. I just wish there as a Buffy level season count rather than just one. It is one of my favorite series ever. If they had the time to tell the story properly, it would be #1 with anything else in a distant #2.

You're barefoot just like River! How appropriate!

It's not even a full season. The seasons of Firefly where supposed to have the normal length of a season (which was 22 or 23 episodes per season, not the 4-8 episodes that networks keep calling a "season" these days).

Before I forget, script writing at that level, is few and far between...especially in Science Fiction...perhaps the Expanse and Beacon 23...maybe...and of course the aforementioned BSG. Anyways...just a thought. All the best. Cheers.

I guess next would be the movie. Brace yourself for that one. It's a rough, difficult ride.

It just seemed like Fox had ZERO confidence in this show ever finding an audience... so it was often pre-empted or moved (or shown out of order so that "following" the character arcs and stories was awkward at best. The Nielson Ratings for the show were NEVER very high (in fact, it was one of the lowest ranking shows in the Fox line-up) which just gave the executives another reason to cancel it. Everyone working on the show felt that before the mid-season point of the first season ... and they always felt the cancellation of the show dangling over their heads with every episode they filmed. So... longer story arcs were cut ... "filler" episodes were dropped ... and they did their best with what they had. The cast bonded together on this sinking ship... None of them, aside from Ron Glass, had ever really been stars on a successful show - so they were all struggling to launch (or re-launch) their careers. Joss Whedon was still riding high with his Buffy and Angel tv-shows - so he had some clout to push back and try to do things his way... but it wasn't enough. Much like the original Star Trek series... they finally found their audience AFTER they'd been cancelled. It took years before "Serenity" got green-lit by the studio... and it was sold as a possible way to get the show back on the air (but only if it did well enough at the box office -- and well... let's not get into how badly they screwed THAT up) There's been some serious talk recently about bringing the show back ... but there's been so much time which has passed. Getting any of the original cast members back full-time would be nigh impossible, and fans have all had DECADES now to talk about and come up with their own stories about what happened after the credits rolled. And much like the Star Trek franchise and the Star Wars franchise ... I fear that no matter WHAT anyone produces, not enough people will be pleased by the results enough to mute the ones who'll complain about it "not being what THEY wanted" (Similar to how DC comics can never seem to get any of their cornerstone characters off the ground with a film franchise ... too many fans want to see THEIR version of the heroes on screen ... not the version that the director and studios will present to them) At any rate... hope you enjoyed your time in the 'verse ... and I look forward to your watch of SERENITY
