*Jayne:* This the best gun made by man. It has extreme sentimental value. It's miles more worthy 'n what you got! *Mal:* What I got? She has a name. *Jayne:* So does this. I call it Vera.

Without seeing this yet, knowing the episode, this should have been a 2 part reaction . :P Edit: I was right. Wish you could have fit in the moments with the shepherd's "special place in hell" and Jayne and Mal's conversation with "Vera." "Well my days of not taking you seriously are definitely coming to a middle" , and Mal's " I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you." One of my fav episodes.

The bad guys died in the vacuum of space, something that happens very fast. Putting my aerospace engineer hat on for a second, this was awesome in that they showed there is no sound in space (when Jane fires Vera) and firing a gun requires oxygen to react with the gunpowder (why Vera had to be inside a space suit).
@ListerWalkthroughs7 жыл бұрын
firefly do the no sound thing a lot - whenever a ship explodes, or there is a space battle. It's great.
@anonymes28847 жыл бұрын
They'd also juxtapose frantic sound/activity onboard with silent external shots of Serenity, which was really effective. But ** pushes glasses up ** ;), Vera would fire just fine without oxygen. Modern cartridges come with their own oxidiser which is why modern guns will also fire underwater for instance. No air required (well, except for accuracy - rifles spin the bullet to keep it stable as it flies through an atmosphere, in a vacuum maybe it'd tumble and go off target). That said, the suit might be to allow the rifle's action to operate properly (automatic/semi-automatic guns sometimes redirect the expelled gas from the discharge to operate the mechanism which loads the next round and a vacuum might well interfere with that) so it can still be made to make sense.
@houseofaction7 жыл бұрын
there is actually sound in space Space isn’t uniform nothingness. It’s full of stuff. In between the stars, there are clouds of gas and dust. These clouds are sometimes the remains of old stars that went out in a blaze of explosive glory, and they’re the regions where new stars form. And some of that interstellar gas is dense enough to carry sound waves, just not sound perceptible to humans.
@anonymes28847 жыл бұрын
houseofaction It's a valid point in general that space has non-uniformities (there are nebulae etc. and even in the space between galaxies there are atoms of e.g. hydrogen. Interplanetary space has dust as well as a sort of very thin plasma from the star) but space is mostly in fact deeply, profoundly _empty_ of stuff. The density of those intergalactic atoms is about 1 atom per cubic metre, the interplanetary medium is denser at about 5,000,000 particles of various kinds per cubic metre which may sound like a lot until you realise that air has around 10 _million_ _trillion_ times more particles per cubic metre. Nebulae are visible because they're huge, many light years across sometimes, close-up we could easily see through them because of their very low density (about 10 thousand trillion times less dense than air). Pressure waves certainly propagate in nebulae so technically a _sort_ of sound but not sound as we know it (the density is so low that the average time between particle collisions is far too long for conventional sound). Space is _almost_ full of nothing with blips of non-nothingness (like us for instance, * waves * ;) scattered around.
@flamingas7 жыл бұрын
These gas clouds are dense in relation to the rest of space, but otherwise they are about as dense as the best vacuum we can create on earth.

Great commentary at the end, Marketa and Suraj. As a Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel series fan, I remember reading about Firefly before it started airing, and the general description for it was "space western," to which I said, "Oooooookay..." I like Star Wars and *some* Star Trek and I like action films but I'm not really a western kind of gal, so I just didn't know if I'd like it. But it was a Joss Whedon show so I wanted to give it a chance. I'm glad I did, because it really is different than anything else that was on at the time. (Which may have been part of the problem back then - FOX just didn't know how to market it, and fucked the whole thing up.) It's a unique show with an unusual tone. I love the action and adventure, I love the humor, and I especially love all the character relationships and connections, from Wash and Zoe, to Mal and Wash, to Shepherd and Kaylee, to Simon and his sister, and Jayne and pretty much everyone (LOL), just all the different ways these characters interact is so fascinating and funny and sweet. I just love it. It's my favorite Joss Whedon show, and I'm sorry we didn't get to see it evolve beyond these few episodes. At any rate... looking forward to more of your reactions! :)
@TheAes867 жыл бұрын
The relationships are why I think people have so many different "favorite" episodes. It's certain moments in each episode between characters. Like my favorite moment is in Ariel but it's not my favorite episode, but the series would be the poorer without that moment,. It's iconic moments that reveal characters' inner selves that make this show. The writing on the show to be able to give the actors those revealing moments is amazing.
@sherrysink31777 жыл бұрын
I hope you'll write about your favorite moment when they get to Ariel. Not long now! :)
@TheAes867 жыл бұрын
Wow I love your Avatar!!!! I just noticed when it popped up on a notification. BTW I am sure you know the moment I'm talking about. ;) . I think this episode had a "moment" when Inara admits she didn't fall and you can see she thinks all the games are over and they are going to have to deal with their feelings. Of course the response turned it into pure comedy gold but it was still a revealing moment.
