NOTE! For optimal viewing, watch this video at night, with all the lights turned off, full screen with sound turned on.
In this short movie, I tried to capture my feelings and experiences with fireflies in the woods near my house in Fairfield, Iowa. I wanted to document not only their beauty and magical glow, but also behavior in their natural environment.
I have chosen not to do any digital manipulation to the video itself, so the footage came straight from the camera. This is real-time footage of fireflies!
Sit back, relax and enjoy the summer magic.

My wife and I used to sit on the deck with a glass of wine and watch them surface at dusk in the forest behind our home. She passed in January after fighting Cancer for almost 2 years. I used to call her Firefly because she truly was the Light of My Life. A few nights ago, and this lasted for 4 days, a firefly got into the house, flew up to the den from the first floor, and stayed there for the entire night. Most people call it coincidence, I call it comforting.

I remember being a teenager in Czech Republic, watching those beautiful moving lights when I passed by a forest. It was before I was diagnosed with schizophrenia and even though I now tend to forget who I am and what I lived, I still remember how beautiful this moment was. Now I'll go cry again lol. Take care people.

When I was a kid, I remember that I saw them a couple of times when we had a holiday up in the mountain. Last year I saw them again for the first time in decades. It was truly magical that I vowed to do a pilgrimage to that woods annually. There’re only a couple of places in my country where I could see them in the summer. This year I saw only a couple of them in mid July. Hopefully they don’t go extinct anytime soon.

When I was growing up in Iowa, we'd have spectacular displays of hundreds and hundreds of fireflies - or as we called them 'lightning bugs' - and this just took me back to way more wonderful and magical time. Thank you!

I remember when I took school a vacation at my cousin's house who lives on a hill, we caught fireflies on that god forsaken place behind their house. It's really scary cause we knew there could be snakes out there still we brought our plastics and caught fireflies in the middle of the night. Once we're done we went back to the house and we've released all the fireflies we caught in a closed room then watch them go all spiral in the middle towards the light bulb. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity for us because in our family once you reach a certain age, mostly 14 years old we're gonna need to wear glasses or else we wouldn't see at night at all so such thing wouldn't be possible. I know it's never gonna happen again because aside from our hereditary eye weakness life also gets in the way.

I saw my first firefly on the campus of the Univ. of Notre Dame while visiting my Dad during the summer while he was attending a Blaze Pascal seminar and lived in one of the dorms. While sitting on the bus from O'Hare all the way there, I saw the greenest corn plants I ever saw, the Sears Tower, the depressing South Side with the public housing, but what brought tears to my eyes was seeing Gary, IN. I was half my current age, and even before 1990, I was very aware of the massive deindustrialization of America. When Trump used the work "carnage" in his Inaugural Speech, he had it right. Sad but he had it right. Then after traveling and living around the country, I saw....more carnage. It's more important to buy what you need with income you worked for at a higher price as opposed to buying it cheap with a credit card because you can't find a job. Dignity means something to humans. Thanks for posting this. It brightens my night just like that evening at ND. :-)

Beautiful video Radim! This is many years later but I hope you'll see my question - would you have suggestions of how to effectively film fireflies? While long exposure for photos makes that more feasible, the 180 degree rule puts hard limitations on shutter speed for videos, so I'm hugely impressed by what you've managed to capture. Hoping to see more from you in future, have a good one!
