At first I thought that the second survivor was her friend with glasses, but then I remembered that she had a completely different hairstyle, and Sam’s model, although it was the most similar to Firefly of all three, was still somehow visually different.

If they were going to kill those three from the trailer, then they would have made it as cinematic, tragic and obvious as possible. For example, if Firefly saw broken red-framed glasses on the ground. But if these three survive her character trailer, then we can be 80% sure that we will meet them further in the story. 20% on the fact that they can still kill them in the Firefly character story.

The wildest thing for me in this video is the scene of Firefly (as Sam) flying towards the Swarm. Any other anime would have that be a climactic finale for an arc or season. From my thoughts it might be like. Reborn. And they used tree to represent it if you watch clearly she's almost dead at that point but somehow she got the power and smack the 2nd wave + planet together with her

Metaphorical: representing a desire to live, or finding a new purpose after she realized that the thing she'd been fighting for (Glamoth) was gone. Trees are seen as slow growing, representing the past as well as the future, but are also incredibly powerful and tenacious; they'll crack apart concrete and steel if left to grow, and can survive in harsh environments. The unnatural speed of the growth could represent a surge of power, and it grows from her tears. It's also literally the line she says at the end: "I dreamed of a scored earth...". The 2nd half of this animated short was the most conceptual/open-ended of their animated shorts. Lots of room for interpretation; feels very Evangelion-coded to me.
