I would love to see a Firefly FF338 and PRS SE CE 24 Review! I have a Question.. is it not better to spray a clearcoat over shielding paint so that it's protected and doesn't flake off over time? The flaking of the shielding paint is the loss of bond under the paint. If you spray over paint that doesn't have a good bond it will still flake... The flakes become MUCH larger when it does. You can see this in the Auto Industry. A car that the paint has come off on the hood or the roof... it comes off in large areas all at once. The base coat has lost it bond and released from the primer (or the primer has release from the metal) The clear coat will hold it together as long as it can but then cracks along the edge of the bond loss. The whole area just peels off in a large area due to the clear coat holding it together. You need to increase the bond of the base coat... witch in this case may make the base coat nonconductive if you add a bonding element. Old school sometimes is better.... Shielding tape is the way I go ! It is harder to do and takes more time to do.... That is why we have shielding paint . Companies lower cost and speed up production. But if you add a clear coat, it will help hold the shielding paint together as a hole....it will now just release in large parts when it is ready to flake off...Remember you have already lost bond to the body... the hard topcoat is just holding it until the area becomes so large that it just cracks. Hope this helps !

Anytime I have bought a 100-200 dollar guitar, it has been to either learn fretwork or setup, etc. I fix them up, get them good and then donate to a worthy young person taking lessons at the local shop that has little money. It is fulfilling and I have learned a bunch. I have no desire to collect dozens of guitars. I am down to 3 now.

I have sold 4 guitars in the last 3 weeks .... freeing up money for more guitar reviews. I have a meeting tomorrow night on another guitar.... In my case most of the guitars are sold at cost.... Guitar and Parts to bring them to a solid level. Some get a full fret level.... Some just get a full setup... and Some get the HOLE THING super mod ... with hours and hours of work to make them better than any 2000.00 guitar... but they are still sold off at cost plus a small amount of time and work. I do it for the Love of Music..... I can still do a guitar and pay myself and be under a 1000.00 dollars Kramer or Jackson. Resale is the problem in these cases.... most don't want to spend 1000.00 on a GREAT no name guitar.... The market has done this. I get it... But those that do understand name band pricing and are pass it.... They just want a great guitar at a great price... Thats where i come in... Custom Guitars made from production parts that play great at the 1000.00 price point ... Custom ... your pickups ...your bridge... your wiring type.... ext. I just love guitars.... and I have name brand guitar I play everyday.... and No name guitars I play everyday.. Or Budget Brand guitars... They are all the same at the end of the day once they get the TLC they need.

This was a great review. The guitar 🎸🎶 was definitely a good looking guitar. The use of traditional string trees vs a single one designed for a Floyd Rose Locking System. This was definitely something that could have been avoided if they consulted with a Luthier.. The fret issue is something else that could have been avoided. I believe that nost people would probably be willing to pay a little more for a guitar ready to go. So say $20 to as you said $50 more. I would be willing to do the work on the guitar 🎸 🎶 my self. However I would want to see a better price for my efforts. Your going to shield this new locking Nut New Locking Bridge. Pickups are a personal Decision... Cheers 🍻🥃🥃🎸🎵🎶 🎶🎶🎶🎶

a Guitar with a FR bridge for 189.00 is asking a lot.... This guitar does have some things that stand out ! but the Bridge and Locking Nut are not the case. Thanks for commenting !

Awesome review as usual! I purchased this same mode/color and should say I'm a huge fan of Firefly. But I'm glad this wasn't my 1st purchase from them. As beautiful as the guitar was, I returned mine as it was unplayable due to the poor locking tremolo. Here is a list of main issues mine had, which I emailed to Firefly when requesting a return/refund. "Feedback/Issues: Tremolo will not keep tune when used (major quality fail) The tremolo arm does not seat firmly, there is too much play at the base (needs a better fitting tremolo arm) The locking nut is set too high off the fretboard, causing open chords to go sharp (needs to be lowered so 1st fretted notes are in tune) Open strings go sharp when locking the nut (needs a string retainer bar installed behind the locking nut) Ghost notes resonate when not playing (most likely due to the tremolo springs, needs better springs and/or a spring dampener) The truss rod adjuster was not seated correctly, interfering with the neck pickup positioning (I was able to seat the adjuster properly and reposition the pickup) The strings are gritty and turn my finger tips black (terrible strings, needs better strings) Otherwise, a beautiful looking guitar, but unplayable as it will not stay in tune" On a positive note, I purchased this same model during the previous drop, only difference it has the 2 point floating trem, and that guitar was one of their best right out of the box. And last thought, if this one was to be my main guitar, replacing the locking trem would have been totally worth the additional investment.

Well said.... In the video you can see me playing with the Tremolo arm... it does seat right and the treads on the locking nut for the bar are not great.... My guitar also had a bad neck pocket route.... plus everything you spoke about. I hope they reach out to me .... I did E-mail them and offered my services for design and concepts. I do not think they will never allow an outside person to review and help them design and work out the bugs in their models. I think they only see returns and credits on models and try to just revise the model to decrease the problems. As I said in the video.... They could do a better FR clone bridge... I would pay 250.00 if they bridge was good. they can get a FR bridge on there end for 45.00 bucks ...they are most like paying 12 to 18 for the stock bridge... China market prices from china vendors. I would pay 100 to 120 for a real Gotoh... but I don't think that would ever happen. but it could be at the 300.00 to 320.00 price plus shipping with a Gotoh Bridge.

Thanks for the playing and commentary. I've had my eye on this particular guitar since it became available. It'd be nice (and wise) if Firefly actually listed the information for each model. No one knows the features of one of their guitars until someone buys it and provides a detailed review (and yours are the most concise and thorough I've seen)... and the guitar is often sold out at that point.

I did a review on the FFMN from Firefly last year... This guitar is in line with that guitar. Even though it passed the fret leveling well with the fret leveling tool... and the FFMN did not. Both had problems with the frets... The FFMN needed a full fret level and crown... and this guitar needed the frets pressed in.. witch really you should go through afterwords and do a Semi level and crown ( Lite pass to start ) It comes down to price... The bridge adds cost to the guitar and they are keeping the price down at the same level as the NON-FR bridge guitars. So something has to give. good news is a Floyed Rose will fit in the guitar just fine.. No problems. This guitars needs a good FR bridge or Gotoh FR and good tuners that are all the same height off the head stock. ( not staggered tuners witch it cam with ) a full-length string tree across all the strings for the locking nut. I really think 200.00 in parts plus the cost of the guitar and your time... There are other guitars on the market for the 400.00 dollar price point with the FR bridge that will not need as much work. Jackson has some nice JS guitars with the FR bridge @ 380.00 Solar Guitars S models also has some models in that price point. Just things to think about...

I have seen many reviews that refute their company claims as well. They seem to play fast and loose with the truth in some cases, then in others, give you premium without a mention. I find it sort of shocking in this day and age, that they operate like that, despite making pretty good cheap products.

Whoa, this is the deepest dive yet!! I dont expect much from any guitar with FR that is at this price. That being said, it might make a nice mod platform. Especially if the mounts for the FR bridge is the same spacing. I certainly like the shape, it is a little offset, like a "melted Strat" almost. I must say I am impressed that these Firefly guitars sometimes have better fretwork than Gibson and Fender. Attention to detail is everything. It will be interesting to see what Far East guitars look like in 5 years or so. How much better will they get?

I think there are already guitars coming from China and Indonesia that are GREAT GUITARS ! If they want to build a great guitar they can... If they want to build a great low-cost guitar they can. I see pricing going up on the lower cost stuff to be more in line with the market. They will only build to a price point like this until they don't have too. But will the QC go up with the price change or will we still get the same low budget hardware but at a new higher price ???

Ball End Fret Guitars . . . . Have this problem more so than Standard Fretted Guitars. I have seen this problem on other ball end fret guitars. Standard Fretted guitars with binding also can have this problem as they cut the bottom of the fret wire for the binding to pass by. In this guitars case the frets on the High E side were not pressed in all the way... All of them were up just a little... Most likely due to the factory not getting the neck in the fixture right when pressing the frets in... This guitar is not a newbies guitar... It requires work to get the guitar right... Plus the FR bridge... New players should start with a Hard Tail Bridge. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and joining in on the fun !

OK...today is 4/18/24. I received mine today. too maybe two weeks. Arrived PERFECT, and the rest applies as you proved brother. Frets were noisy so, needs polished and the regular setup details however, out of the box, I tuned it and played it, stretched the strings, and played it sa-moore! It rocks as is, will be even more amazing when its set up correctly. I have NO complaints...none. Anyone who wants this blue beauty, should go ahead and push the "add to cart" button at The Garden. So tell me brother, what am I buying next?

I'm getting ready to review the next Tele.... But demo's may be on hold for a little while. I had a saw come back and get my left-hand pointer finger ... It's not bad ... but bad enough that it will take a week or so to heal... So going to start doing the fit and finish ... QC check.... Electronics check ...stuff hopefully but that time the finger will be healed enough to demo.

Ya.... telling the guy on a framing crew . . . . Go get the 2x4 stretcher out of the truck. This guitar is one of the BAD guitars from Firefly at its price point. Very hard to build a good guitar with these specs and a FR bridge at this price point... I would say you can't... I would say right now a stock guitar with good pickups and a good FR-Bridge starts at 350.00 dollars... That a starting price for anything worth buying. The cost of a good useable FR-bridge just adds too much to the build cost. Solar makes one at 350.00 that is good to go out of the box... Jackson makes one in the 375.00 good to go out of the box. both are ok guitars... these guitars are starting points. If ya want a good FR-Bridge guitar that is good and not a compromise in pickups... bridge.... fit and finish... your in the 500.00 dollars range at the min price point. You waould hve to find A DEAL or find on one SALE.... I picked up a Dean MD24 at GC for 450.00 NEW .... WHAT A DEAL ! ! ! ! ! I have seen X class Jacksons at GC for 550 on sale.... Check out my FFMN videos on the Firefly FFMN.. I did a lot of videos on what it would take to build one of these up to a pro level. Just parts came to 450.00 with the guitar... PLUS ALL YOUR TIME.... So 500 to 600 is a deal for a good FR-Bridge guitar

I can't tell but it looks like a Yamaha body .. the Firefly looks like a handsome guitar aside from those issues.. if I bought this with those issues I wouldn't know how to fix those problems, so I would just return it or give it away at a cost to a dude that works on guitars & likes to mod guitars..

Was sick for a few days . . . 4 days getting it and 4 days getting rid of it... LOL Plus, its that's time of year... cold then warm then back to cool ... LOL This video has SO MUCH TIME IN IT.... it was my longest ever... seemed liked editing was never ending as well... When I first reviewed the video, I found 3 edit problems... witch I did not fix due to time... It would have taken 2 more days to fix. The problems were not bad, so I just posted as is. Going back to work on the FFDC video group and starting the next review. I do have two other videos in edit 1) a new padel video 2) and the SR cab video..

My Firefly LP style does that same fret thing, where the high e string gets caught up under the fret.

ya this is the fret not being seated right on the fret board. Some say to CA glue around the fret to seal the gap.... This makes a mess.. IMO You need to tap the fret down that are not seated all the way down... In most cases you will have to do a fret level after you do this.. In this guitars case all the frets across the High E were not seated all the way down and I was able to seat them and not have to fret level... But this is very hard to do.... and you can always get every fret down as it should be without making it to low to the next fret .... Plan on doing a full fret level if your tapping down frets to fix this problem.

The glue just makes a mess.... gets all over the fret board... and No, don't try soldering... that will really mess up the fret board. If it doesn't happen to often, I would live with it until you get the funds to pay someone to set the frets down or you feel you can do the work yourself. You can make it worse by trying to do a fast cheap repair.... IMO@@Tijuanabill

Honesty ... NO They made a guitar that should have never been made with the parts they used... Any guitar player could have told them this was a bad setup. Staggered tuners ????? No string tree cross all 6 strings ????? Then have QC problems.. Neck pocket route Finish Blemish right on top of the guitar Wire grounds are frayed in electronics frets not pressed in all the way This is the worse Guitar I have received from them. It would also seem that this channels 1 guy that helps out behind the scenes. His guitar was also bad... He has posted here ... So you can read his thoughts as well. He did not tell me about his problems with this guitar until the review was posted . For me this is a NO GO guitar. If the QC problems were not there... and the parts were correct on the guitar for a FR bridged guitar... This would have been great. To me they slapped together a MISS ...with no thought at all...

Well I'm now at the end of the video. So many issues here ! But I do believe I'll be buying this just to mod and have as a trem companion to my non trem monsoon. I was happy to hear a Gotoh will fit. One question tho, Are the frets Extra Jumbo ? I didn't catch it if you mentioned the free size. And are they stainless ? I hope I don't get one that has that high e dip off issue. That's a horribly annoying problem.

The Gotoh FR uses the same Center to Center post offsets... Should be a drop in replacement. I used a Floyed Rose German made to test fit. If you buy this guitar... you will need a full Tremolo Kit 1) Bridge with springs 2) Top locking nut ( R2 ) 3) full cross over string tree. 4) Tuners... They installed staggered tuners from the factory... Wrong tuners for an FR bridge guitar. You'll need standard tuners that are all the same height. As far as the frets.... They seem to be stainless... But unless I cut one it's hard to tell. After setting the frets and taking the tap tool to the ends..... they seem soft for stainless... But there are so many grades of stainless.. But they do look like stainless steel. OHHHH and no they are not Extra Jumbo Frets. They seem to be medium frets. The base doesn't seem to be a jumbo.

The Monsoon is a 24 fret neck... and this one is a 22 fret... So your bridge spacing is going to be off.... Budget Guitars with the FR bridge...that are 24 fret . . . . . 1) Solar S guitars 2) Harley Benton 620 3) Jackson JS dinky 4) SBS Guitars Solar is going around 350.00 Harley Benton 620 around 250.00 Jackson JS around 380.00 SBS .... I think are around 350 ????

Ya ... I hear ya.. PayPal is how I buy from them.. Firefly will NEVER send me a guitar for free.... LOL Or Leo Jaymz ... IYV ... E-art.. Volgoa .. Vola or any other brand. My reviews are to open and honest...I think they would look down on the content of their product being reviewed in this matter. I love Firefly guitars.. great bang for the buck. This one is not their best deal... If you want a mod platform already setup for a FR bridge... Then YES !!!! this maybe the guitar for you. I like Amazon ... buying is safer I think, and they stand behind the product. But again, never had a problem with PayPal I have never had a problem with Guitar Gardens with any payment or over fees... I have never had a problem with their customer service... It can be a little slow at times.. But they always make it right.

That sounds good for a single pedal. Really liking the multi effects unit, GT-1, I have. It takes a lot of noodling around to figure it out totally, but I'm getting there. It has an amp modeler that features a Peavey 5150ish that I really like. Several distortions to choose from amongst a plethora of other effects. At first I liked it, then I wasn't sure, but now I love it. I haven't tried changing anything via the cloud, although it's possible. I seem to get better 80s sounds out of it than bias fx, IMO. I have the 80's/ 90's rig in my rack units.... The sound from the ART Pre-amp is just spot on for 80's hair music.... But... a Budget / Low-cost system that can get you there is what we're trying to do.... This is the Pedal for a low cost 80's and 90's tone. Really adding more funds to buy a more expensive pedal is not needed. This pedal is 41 dollars right now... add a good delay and some reverb and you can get there for very little money. The Egnater Amp I'm using cost me 400.00 used 2 channels, Clean and Dirt with EL84 and 6L6 power tubes to blend the power amp tone. also has built in reverb. add this pedal for 41 dollars Total 441.00 bucks for that tone... I will do that all day long ! now it's time for me to start shopping a good delay for this sound.... it would be nice to stay under the 500-dollar mark for the amp and the pedals... that's my goal!

OHHHHHH sorry ... Though you were commenting on the new video... LOL The Line 6 Stomp is great for just about anything.... guitar and this pedal is all you need playing out if the place has a system... just run out of the Line 6 Stomp to front of house...Don't need an amp.

@DominionFretWorks Yeah, GT-1 is a pedal, kinda. It'll fit in the accessories pocket of gig bag. Battery or cord powered. Built in expression pedal. I picked it up from a guy who wasn't interested in figuring out how to use it for about the cost of 2 budget pedals or less - $80. Basically, brand new. I found an amp I'm going to look at this week that's for sale locally. I was thinking of just getting a speaker made specifically for MEUs when I came across it. Fender Blues Deluxe. See how it sounds, doing research on it to see if it's a winner or trash. May pick up some analog pedals down the road, but other than an amp, I'm set right now.

@DominionFretWorks He's asking $250 for the amp, so if it's to my liking, $330 for rig, which I think is reasonable for someone starting out, but most will buy new, which will usually be much more. The GT-1 is going for $199 new. And a decent tube amp starts around $500ish, so hopefully, I can come in under half of that price. I saw the 15w from. MONOPRICE, but for the cost of mods that I see most people make and the amp price, that's basically up around the cost of a decent amp, so that really doesn't make sense to me. I saw a few videos of modding the circuit on the board, but I'm no engineer. May be easy to some, but may be my luck that I try it and fry the board. Then I'm back at square one with a round peg so-to-speak. I thought about the hand wired unit, but then I have to get a cab, and I'm trying to keep my cost as low as possible for now just to see what I can do with the least amount of cash for a decent rig that's portable.

@@jerrydover4140 You can always go the Power cab / Line 6 stomp way.... Use the line 6 stomp into your amp you have.... then pick up a powered cab. It's not tube... but very easy to move around. There are a few Egnaters on reverb right now for 425 ish.... combos. and I saw a few Peavey classic 30's for the 400 ish price. The tone stack in the peavey I don't believe is a goods sounding as the Egnater... You're looking for Pre 2014 Egnater's .....

So I bit on another Firefly with a Floyd Rose and locking nut. Unfortunately for me, the top locking bolt/plate won’t secure as hole in nut is stripped. Have never replaced nut on electric like this before, but seems pretty straight forward. (Unscrew old and put new back in and hope it holds 😁). Would you say they are using R3 42.85 (43mm) licensed FR version? (Would assume one on this video is similar to FFST I have.. Not sure if it is the same as FFMN you overhauled earlier. ) Any preferences on replacement part (FR or knockoff) and words of wisdom? Otherwise guitar seems fine. Thanks in advance.

r2 is 41.3mm and R3 is 42.85.... if I remember correctly Most likely you will need a R2 get a shim set as well ... You may need to shim..... Or you may need to sand the bottom of the nut so your first fretted notes are correct. You may also need to file a little to get the neck radius correct to your guitar... Gotoh makes good locking nuts... The Firefly's I have done in the passed I had to sand a little on the low E side... and just touch up file for the radius.... I used an R2 on the FFMN

@@DominionFretWorks a very similar ffst VH model with same headstock/maple neck. (Snagged one before pulled) When I measured across the nut I was getting 43mm so thought it was R3 type.

@@CG-gf7ce Yes, the R3 would work well....on 43MM They do make 3 radii of that nut ... I have seen 10 / 12 and 14 inch.... But again .... finding that spec on the one you're looking at is sometimes hard.... Most don't tell you the radius spec.

@@DominionFretWorksnot sure on radius. Will have to take off to check. Ordered an R3 on Amazon hoping it might do the trick. Will know Tuesday I guess. It does have string retainers like on the blue in video. Neck like this one too except flamed maple vs rosewood.
