Firelei Báez: In the Studio

Ahead of Firelei Báez’s first exhibition with Hauser & Wirth, step inside the artist’s New York studio to learn more about her paintings, drawings and immersive installations that explore the influences of the Afro-Caribbean diaspora against the backdrop of colonial histories and narratives.
The artist discusses the work ‘The Fact That It Amazes Me Does Not Mean I Relinquish It,’ which is her first foray into bronze, produced working with Stratton Sculpture Studios in Philadelphia.
Featuring large-scale canvases, drawings and her first-ever bronze sculpture, Báez’s exhibition is on view at our Downtown Arts District complex from 13 September 2024 - 5 January 2025.

The ideas are interesting but unfortunately the figurative work is very uninteresting to look at.. standard idealized non-bodies. I wonder why. She works with models but it might as well be a 3D print or a clip art silhouette. Feels like a missed opportunity for depth here.

When I saw her apron she used in painting, I’d thought she’s not an artist. Artists are usually too into their art and don’t care about paint on their bodies. Just my point of view.
