To my understanding, a recent software update has caused an issue with ADB Debugging, which may also be causing USB storage to stop functioning. Great video, I just wished you mentioned that you can't transfer apps to a different firestick at the beginning. I was hoping to transfer apps from my 4K over to my 4K max...

You can "copy" the apk file from one Firestick to another but it will not keep any data and you will need to manually copy the apk file for each app you want on your new Firestick. In all honesty, it's just as easy to install them again from scratch rather than trying a long-winded copy and paste exercise. Hope this helps! Thank you for watching 😊👍❤️

I started from scratch in the end, everything went fine, but ES explorer wouldn't recognise the new usb stick (SanDisk 32gb 3.0 drive) although it did show up on the firestick. So I reformatted the drive in Fat32 on my laptop, now the drive will not show up on the Firestick! I tried another usb 2.0 stick and that showed up on the Firestick. I'm baffled that this new 3.0 drive worked once on the Firestick and now it doesn't :( although it works fine on my laptop... Keep up the good work, you have a new subscriber.

Here are a few things to check here to help discover why this is happening. 1) Are you sure you are entering your IP address correctly? 2) If you are certain you are entering your IP address correctly but you are still getting the same results, you could try entering the local host name instead: 127.0.0.1 and try the process again. 3) Unplug everything, including your Firestick and power supply. Wait at least 30 seconds then plug everything back in and start again. 4) Try going into the Settings and turning ADB Debugging off and then on again. 5) What version of Fire OS are you running as this is important to know and will define if you can use the ADB process or not. Have you seen this issue on a 4k firestick. MicroSD card 64g Formatted to FAT32 partitioned to 50/50 mix. After installing third party app The app works then after a day or two the app disappears. Try to reinstall and the it shows unable to install due to a Package with same name. Tried locating Package unable to locate. Any idea what's happening here. Does it with or without external storage. Help is appreciated.

I have done this in the past. Now I can see the USB on my tv screen saying connected. BUT it does not shoe under storage in settings, so it does not work. It does show in ES Explorer etc. I am using a 4K fire stick with the amazon newest upgrade. I have tried many different USB drives. tried a 3 port Hub and also just the OTG cable and USB drive. at one time the settings Manage APPS you could click on the app and it gave me MOVE and it would transfer to the USB. Only happened once. That was the perfect setup for me. need help

"Mantis" is a codename that Amazon give to their devices. "Mantis" is the codename for the 4K Firestick. Yours could say something different "needle" for example. This shouldn't affect the process and you can still follow it. Thank you for watching 😊👍❤️

Have you formatted the drive to FAT32? If you're having trouble with the 1TB drive, it may be worth trying a smaller drive to see if power is the issue.

I LOVE the video; carefully followed all instructions for using OTG adapter to add USB drive and increase system storage on FireStick 4k; everything went exactly as shown on video, including use of the "df -h" command in the ADB app to confirm that the new memory/drive is now recognized in the Stick OS. However, the added memory still does not appear in the "Storage" section of the "About" menu in Settings. What does this mean?

Nix on the above question, and thanks again for this GREAT video. After posting, I saw your answer to the same question elsewhere in comments, i.e., the portion allocated to system storage (for me, that was 100% of the new drive) doesn't show up on the native "About/Storage" menu. I've now confirmed the new memory is working, by buying, installing and testing a game that previously exceeded the original system memory and wouldn't install. I added SO much system storage (256GB) this should never be an issue again with this FireStick, and assume I will have to use the ADB app to periodically check available memory on the new drive ... thanks for showing us all how to do THAT, too. One problem I had on the "steps" was that my FireStick menu wasn't showing any "developer options" tab ... I had to pause the video and do a separate Google search to learn how to activate that tab. Once I got there, everything else went "like buttah" ...

I think my TV might be too old I don't know if that port USB port could charge that phone but I bought the adapters today from Amazon and I had the splitter things for a couple months down but I bought those a four pack of those thumb drives or whatever that they're cheap but they're 64 gigabytes I know I have to format them to fat three or whatever you call it reformat those thumb drives I don't have a computer to do it I reformatted one in my Google tablet though and the other one I had a fire stick I have the Google Chromecast TV one and firestick

There could be several ways to resolve this. 1) Are you sure you are using a 4K Firestick? 2) Are you certain you are entering your IP address correctly? Double-check and try again. 3) If you are certain you are entering your IP address correctly but you are still getting the same results, you could try entering the local host name instead: 127.0.0.1 and try the process again. 4) Make sure and double-check you are spelling sm list-disks correctly. 5) Make sure you are entering the correct drive numbers after you run sm list-disks for your device as they may be different to 8,0. 6) Is your storage formatted to FAT32? 7) Are the 3 lights showing on the UGREEN hub? If not, try wiggling the connectors to get the lights to come on. 8) If none of the above works, restart your device. Unplug it from the power supply and unplug your power supply from the power source. Wait at least 30 seconds then re-boot everything and try again. 9) Do you have an alternative USB storage device you can use to try this with instead? 10) Do you have an alternative OTG cable you can try? I followed this video to add a 64MB san disk flash drive to my firestick 4K. the firestick formatted the flash drive. I did not partion, but used option 1 to allocated all storage to system storage. I have downloaded x-plore, but it went to internal storage. I watched your video on moving apps from internal to external, but none of the apps show as being on the external drive. I clicked them to move with the check box, and they showed up in downloader folder, but they do not indicate they are on the external drive. suggestions.

Very frustrating, I formatted to Fat32 my Toshiba 2TB HDD was able to find disk and got the same disk:8,0 I then typed in option 2 mixed. But I tried twice and got the following error. Error: Java.Lang.IllegalStateException: command ‘29 volume partition disk:8,0 mixed 50’ failed with ‘400 29 Command failed’ what am I doing wrong? Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix this? My disk is also making a funny clicking sound. I bought this brand new from Amazon. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You may need to double check the partitions. Make sure that there are no other partitions on this drive, The whole HDD needs to be formatted as 1 partition. Thank you for watching 😊👍❤️

I tried this and it didn't work. I used 123gb samsung Fit Plu formatted FAT32 and wouldn't connect. I tried Sandisk 32gb and completed everything but it just shows fuse for Firestick internal storage but not for the usb flash drive. I had already done all your troubleshooting and even reset Firestick 4K to factory default and started over with the same results. I have been trying for 2 days now, please help.

If a family member gets their ip address from their stick whilst connected at their home address but then bring said Firestick to my house could I enter their ip address at my house (different ip address) and once all of the processes are completed and they return back home would everything work as it should? Or would I have to physically go to their home to set it up? It’s just that they are not local to me and was going to get them to post it out to me. Many thanks

I am back !! The power issue has come back and reared it’s ugly head. The Firestick keeps rebooting. It is making a beeping sound off and on before it decides to reboot. I have to assume my Seagate 2TB storage does not have its own power. What are my options ? Get a different storage device? Hello & thank you for all your information. I got as far as downloading the adb shell entered my IP address and left the 5555 hit connect and it just keeps spinning. It says, please make sure the target device has network ADB enabled. (I don’t know what that means) You may need to accept a prompt on the Target device if you are connecting to it for the first time from this device. Then connection failed. Again & again. I am using 2nd generation 4k Software 5.2.8.7 My software says it’s up to date. Other cable Sans disk 32 gb. Please help & thank you very much. Debbie

Unfortunately, you cannot run the ADB process with any Fire TV device running Fire OS 5 as it is running on an older operating system and will not recognise the ADB commands. Fire OS 5 only runs on a 2nd Generation Firestick so it is not a 4K Firestick that you have, otherwise it would be Fire OS 6. Yes you can. What storage you use is down to you, but there are few things you need to consider when choosing your USB storage. I personally use and recommend the SanDisk 32GB Flash Drive Amazon US - amzn.to/3aYwuGe Amazon UK - amzn.to/3vQy05t As Fire TV devices are formatted to FAT32, the maximum size of USB storage that you can use is 2TB, however, Amazon officially recommends using USB drives that are 128GB or smaller. Amazon also recommends that high speed USB 3.0 drives are used, even though Fire TV Devices have a 2.0 USB port because USB 3.0 drives tend to have faster read/write speeds and will perform better, even when connected to USB 2.0 ports. You also need to be aware that with this process, your Fire TV device is likely to run slower when launching apps and moving around the menus as files on your USB storage cannot be read as fast as they can be read directly on the internal device storage. I had earlier followed your instructions to add a memory stick moor added storage wgicun worked fine. I swapped out this fire stick to another tv. I executed your procedural steps and got to the x-pore download attempt which did not show up on the added storage but was shown on the manage applications list. I then tried to go to file link to see if I could download anything else but was stymied with a no internet access message. My internet connection is/was active. What codes are necessary to get a download executed? Your instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Is there another video I can reference to start from ground zero to get things back on track. Maybe reset the fire stick with the power off option. My OTG connections are correct. To be honest, I’m completely stumped about what I should do too get it back on track as it was before. I am using OS6 4K fire stick. TIA.. sorry for being bothersome. I’m not completely comp illiterate but I’m definitely not at your level of expertise in these matters..

Hello Tanya, In the xplore app, my external drive appears and I moved a couple of apps from the App Mgr/Installed folder over to it and I can see them there. I then open one at a time in the external drive and it asked if I want to install it which I did but they are installed back into the Apps Mgr/installed folder so when I go into Settings/Applications/Manage Installed Apps and look for the image next to app telling me it was installed to the external drive, there is no icon/image there. I followed your instructions about formatting the drive to FAT32 and also using the partition software due to the size of the drive, then use the Remote ADB Shell to add the drive. I am using Firestick Version 6, my external drive brand is VenderCo and it is partitioned w/1TB for storage, I am using Win. 10 Professional Home Edition and I did not get any error messages during the process.

So far I’ve tried 1tb with its own power supply , 500gb hdd passport , a 2tb passport 3.0 and a Kingston 128gb stick .. Nothing doesn’t pick anything up I’ve tried es explorer to see if that picks it up . Again nothing I thought may be the otg cable but it shows the passport has power . I’m stumped to be honest . Hi Tanya, Great tutorial!! I had no issues and everything works as you described. After using it for weeks it now is asking me to update my apps. When I accept the request to update the apps it says I'm out of storage and cancels the installation for the updates. I know for certain I have plenty of internal storage both on the Firestick and the USB. I did do the 100% internal storage option and didn't allocate any external storage. Have you encountered this dilemma and do you know of a fix for this situation? Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately, this is an issue. There are two ways around this. 1. Uninstall the app and then re-install the updated app. 2. Move the app to your internal storage, update the app and move it back to the external storage. If you’re unsure how to do this, refer to the correct guide. Unplug everything, including your Firestick and power supply. Wait at least 30 seconds, then plug everything back in and try again. Go into Settings and turn off ADB Debugging. Then, turn it back on and try again. Check which version of Fire OS is running on your Firestick. You can only use Remote ADB Shell with Fire TV devices running Fire OS 6 and 7. If you’re not sure, refer to firetvsticks.com/how-to-increase-firestick-storage/. Ensure you have input the list-disk command correctly. The correct line to enter is: sm list-disks Check your storage is formatted to FAT32. If unsure, refer to firetvsticks.com/how-to-format-usb-storage-to-fat32/. The USB storage may be incompatible with the Firestick. For example, it may be too big or need to be formatted correctly. In addition, some brands work better than others. If you’re unsure what size USB storage to use or which brands work best, refer to firetvsticks.com/how-to-increase-firestick-storage/. There could be an issue with the OTG cable or adapter. Try replacing it with a new one if you can. There may be insufficient power to supply the USB storage drive and the Firestick. Ideally, connect your Firestick to a power outlet with the power adapter and cable that came with the Firestick.

I have a Fire TV Stick 4K. I followed your instructions twice. With two different USB storage devices. The Fire stick boots up and stays active for the time to paint the home screen then shuts down. What advice do you have regarding this issue?

How are you powering your Firestick? What power cord and power plug are you using? Please use the original that came in the box. Do not use the USB port on your TV to power your Firestick. Power it using a proper power outlet and plug. What size storage are you using? It can be no larger than 2TB. if you are using a large external drive, does it have a port to use its own power supply?

Have you formatted your storage to FAT32? Double check you have entered the command correctly, type sm list-disks Have you entered your IP address correctly? Please check you are not using a gateway or MAC address. If you are sure you are entering your IP address correctly but still getting the same results, you could try entering the local hostname instead: 127.0.0.1 and try the process again. Could you let me know if you're using an OTG cable or adapter? Which brand is it? Do you have enough power to supply the equipment? Ideally, you should be powered by the mains, i.e. power socket on the wall. If none of the above works, could you restart your device? Unplug it from the power supply and unplug your power supply from the power source. Wait at least 30 seconds, then re-boot everything and try again.

Hi Tanya. Like yourself, I prefer the neat/compact adapter and tiny USB stick set up. I’ve been reading reports, however, of the smaller storage devices heating up and becoming defective, over time. I read one report of the SanDisk that you are using (shown in your video) melting. Someone, who left a review on Amazon UK, had to open their laptop and remove bits of broken/melted plastic from the port! The reviews of other brands (Samsung, for example) mention the drives disconnecting every few minutes. I wonder if they get extra hot due to their small size? Many of them appear to become defective and I can’t help but wonder if they are geared up to smaller transfer tasks, rather than heavy use? Have you experienced any overheating issues? I’m late to the Firestick party but find your videos to be the most helpful. Many thanks!

Hi Billy. To be honest, I only have additional storage attached to my 4K Firestick that I use in the office for demonstration purposes so it is not heavily used. I have therefore not noticed any issues. I will say that I have NEVER heard of a SanDisk overheating to the point of actually melting! That's certainly a new one on me! If you decide to use (or are already using) a SanDisk, or any attached storage, to help prevent or reduce any possibilities of overheating, I would recommend removing the power supply from the Firestick when not in use. I am extremely frustrated by this. I have a 5gbyte firestick pro. Its about 6 months old. I have not only followed your tutorial but two others as well. I think I have tried this about 5 times now. I followed your steps on how to verify if the procedure has worked. I formatted my 16 Gbyte sandisk thumb drive to "private". The info comes back as having done everything right. YET when I open ES explorer it only shows that I have 5 Gbytes of internal storage. Very frustrated

Unfortunately, if your storage is partitioned to Private, you are no longer able to view the contents. It is inaccessible by any file explorer application which is why you need to use the df -h command to see your storage space and not ES Explorer. Thank you for watching 😊👍❤️

I have done this before and it works great ...How ever I just got another firestick it software version is 6.0 and when I type the command this time "sm list-disks all i get is mantis:/ $ ...It is a scan disk 265 gig and I formated it to FAT32 with some softwear to do that .so I know that is correct but its not showing :8,0 or any other config please help ...I have done it once but this just wont work now

Did the 'df -h' command display the 'dev/block/dm-2' storage? If yes, then it is set up correctly. If not, please reformat your storage and repeat the process again. Just to let you know, not all apps can be installed on external storage. Some apps do not have permission to be installed to the external storage. You could try installing a different app and observe the results."

Hi Tanya, I followed your suggestion to increase the storage of applications using a flash drive and an OTG cable. I was very please with the results. However, today I had to reset my firestick to factory defaults in order to resolve a problem with update and wifi. Now my question are: Do I have to restart from scratch or can I bypass some steps? Are any of my applications installed on my flash drive that can be re-used or is it hopeless? I am looking forward to your response and thank you very much for all your help.

Hi. Unfortunately, when you factory reset your device, this will terminate the connection with the USB storage and you will have to start over from scratch sorry. You will more than likely have to format the USB storage to be able to use it again with the Firestick and will therefore loose all data and apps stored on it. Sorry to bring you bad news! Open the Downloader app, then select the Search box. Enter 28907, then select Go. Wait for my Downloads page to load fully, then press the Menu (or Options) button on your remote 2x to enter full-screen mode. Select the Tools category from the list at the top of the page. Or move down to view the Tools category. Find Remote ADB Shell in the list, then select it. On the next page, move down until you see the LIGHT BLUE Download button. Select the Download button, then select Install. When the app has finished installing, select Delete 2x to remove the installation file, as it’s no longer required.

Thanks for the good videos, I have a question I’m trying to set up a external storage space on a firestick version 6 with a sandisk memory stick but it doesn’t seem to be working I typed into ADB shell sm partition disk:8,0 private. I’m not sure if it’s working because it’s only showing /dev /block/ dm-1 but not /dev /block/dm-2 which means it’s showing the internal memory but I’m not sure it’s registering the external. I down loaded ADB shell on the downloader as suggested and the format is FAT32. Any ideas on what might be happening? Thanks.

P.S. When I get updates for apps like Netflix and Disney Plus which I have on the external storage I am being told that there is no space on the Firestick and asks me to install later or remove some apps?

Unfortunately, this is an issue. There are two ways around this. 1. Uninstall the app and then re-install the updated app. 2. Move the app to your internal storage, update the app and move it back to the external storage. If you’re unsure how to do this, refer to the correct guide.
