Inmy town the kids can collect special bags to collect the fireworks garbage on the first of January. The counsil gives them money per full bag and it is much cheaper and cleaner than done by the professionals.

Waar ik me ontzettend aan stoor is dat degene die al dat vuurwerk de lucht in schiet, daarna de rotzooi gewoon op straat laat liggen en te lam is om het op te ruimen. Ik weet niet of mensen dit realiseren, maar vuurwerk bevat ook nog zware giftige metalen die niet best zijn voor je gezondheid én het milieu.

Dat is zover ik me kan bedenken ook het enige valide argument voor afschaffing. Nu zou een belasting verhoging op vuurwerk kunnen compenseren voor de kosten van de schoonmaak, maar dit zal natuurlijk niet alles verhelpen. Ik mis campagnes voor de opruiming van het vuurwerk. Dit overheid zou er goed aan doen om zich daar op in te zetten.

All the kids shared the same bed as did my mom and my aunties, dad and my uncles sleeping it off under the table. We had breakfast of cold oliebollen and appelflappen I had some cream on my hand from the 2nd degree burn from my sterretjes. I good time was had by all even the dog he slept under the bed after being cuddled by all of the kids. A voetzoeker chased him all over the street. The only tradition which comes close is the one of the Scots.

In my country, Guatemala, there are a lot of fireworks and firecrackers all year long (for religious celebrations, birthdays, graduations, football games, you name it...), but people get crazy on Christmas Eve and New Year. I don't like it: too much noise, too much garbage, too much air pollution (in the cities, you can smell them everywhere), dogs and other animals get very stressed, and every year many children get burnt because the firecrackers. They are dangerous!

This fireworks tradition is under threat, with more and more people advocating for all out bans, while most problems are caused by fireworks that are already illegal. Last new year I went into the neighbourhood over here, and it was just families enjoying shooting some rockets and lighting some fountains. Then I come back in my own street (the one bad one in an entire neighbourhood), and it's Belgian Cobras, a bonfire ruining the bicycles standing nearby and drunken assholes throwing beer bottles. None of those are legal, and they're the cause of the vast majority of injuries and incidents involving fireworks. It's just a matter of properly policing that, and everyone other than the assholes can have a good fun time together. But it will probably end in a ban on all consumer fireworks and even little fountains and rockets will only be allowed for trained professionals. I love the Netherlands and how organised we are, but sometimes we just go a little bit too far in our quest to create the utopian society. Some unregulated fun is just that: fun, and let's keep it that way together.

Dutch fireworks is like a war zone, safe spots are all occupied by pets and people intentionally go outside and light up fireworks in the most dangerous ways including throwing it to each other or throwing it in trashcans, glass collection containers, mailboxes and much more.
