1. This is why every person (that isn't from Amsterdam) hates Amsterdam. Too crowded and the bit of authenticity the city has is overshadowed by touristic marketing. To the Rest of the Netherlands it doesn't help that some 'Amsterdammers' kind of take their pride too far and turn it into arrogance. I usually advice people to visit Utrecht/Delft/Leiden/Groningen/Dordrecht or cities like that. Older city centres and a lot more authentic, less swamped with tourists. I'm from Rotterdam which doesn't offer a lot for tourists imho (unless you're into modern art and architecture). 2. On the OV-chip card. All Dutch people know we are being robbed with the OV-chipcard. Since the introduction prices have pretty much doubled and the fact that we had to add some typical Dutch 'bureaucratie' doesn't help. 3. Waste meat is a rather broad term in the Netherlands. As we typically consider a lot of steak cuts 'waste'. Usually in bitterballen either beef or veal is used and stewing meats (typically sukade a.k.a. shoulder and ribmeat) are shredded and added to a flavored roux, breaded and deep fried. 4. The Dutch are a harsh group of people. In the sake of honesty and transparency we tend to be pretty direct. Having said that, it's usually quite hard to insult us (getting easier with the whole PC-movement).

Let's take a closer look at the bitterbal. Don't be scared. No need. Wikipedia helps out. "Bitterballen (plural of bitterbal) are a Dutch meat-based snack, made by making a very thick stew thickened with roux and beef stock and generously loaded with meat, refrigerating the stew until it firms, and then rolling the thick mixture into balls which then get breaded and fried. Seasonings in the base stew usually include onions, salt and pepper, parsley and nutmeg. Most recipes include nutmeg and there are also variations using curry powder or that add in finely chopped vegetables such as carrot. The ingredients are combined and cooked, then refrigerated for the mixture to firm up. Once firm, the filling is rolled into balls roughly 3 to 4 cm in diameter, then battered in a breadcrumb and egg mixture and deep-fried. They are typically served with a ramekin or small bowl of mustard for dipping. They are eaten in Suriname, the Netherlands Antilles, the Netherlands, Belgium, and to some degree in Indonesia. Bitterballen are very similar to the Dutch variant of kroketten (plural of kroket) in their ingredients and preparation/cooking methods, as well as flavour, though the larger kroketten have a distinct oblong sausage shape, but with a similar diameter. The bitterbal derives its name from a generic word for certain types of herb-flavoured alcoholic beverages, called a bitter in Dutch, and are popularly served as part of a bittergarnituur, a selection of savoury snacks to go with drinks, at pubs or at receptions in the Netherlands." When an animal is used for meat, you get some nice big chunks for steaks and such, and some smaller parts, that can not be served as a whole, but are still good meat. That's what is used for bitterballen as well. So don't worry about inedible and weird ingredients. They are not allowed by law. Hope you dare to enjoy them now.

One of the candies I must have when visiting the Netherlands: "driedubbel zoute drop" (triple salt licorice). Most people who weren't raised in the Netherlands can barely stand unsalted licorice, but I'll eat a 500 gram bag of the triple salt variety in a few hours if I'm really feeling it :)

In Amsterdam the Dutch have to wait 20-30 years for a house. No this is no mistake. Myself I wait since 2003 Can you image how busy it is. Most foreigners get a house easier than a dutch It is our government who allows them to do this. So i don't blame people. I Blame politic party like VVD. Who are selling the Netherlands. Houses are to live in,not speculate. So that's why it's Impossible for young people to buy a new house. Average a House cost 300.000 euro. They can't effort it and that's why we have small houses. We are still a small country with 18 million people. Germany 80 million but Germany is 12 times bigger i presume.

The Americans here are pretty sad examples of US citizens - we're not all like that - Kenneth probably needs to stay in a Holiday Inn hotel - something he's probably comfortable with - he could use the exercise that stairs provide. And maybe learn how the transit cards work? and maybe leer wat Nederlands te spreken? And I agree with the others here - to get to know the Netherlands, leave Amsterdam and explore the rest of the country. To me, it's the most highly evolved Western culture on Earth.

I have lost quite a bit of money on the OV-chipcard as well, especially after it was just introduced (and I am not the omly one, I've read that companies like the NS and het GVB have made millions this way), I hate how crowded with tourists the centre of Amsterdam has become and I agree that het Damrak is the ugliest street in Amsterdam. 2:20 I do not understand the complaint about the service. You would prefer if someone Is doing something for you he or she would instead be taking orders in between? I worked in a store and if I was busy with another customer I would say so if someone asked me something in between. If you find waiting 5 minutes to hard then I am more than happy with you leaving. However, if you wait you get my full attention as well. Most likely you are done faster than if I tried to please everyone in between. I am really confused about the expectation here.

When flying with Singapore airlines or Cathay Pacific I can see how good service can be. But I don't need someone carry my suitcase. I can help other people to jam in their suitcase in the overhead compartment to help out a bit and feel good about it at the same time. I think the dutch are just very down to earth. We can often get great deals on very expensive hotels. Very dutch to go for great deals....hahahah... but that level of service is almost embarrassing. Almost... ;-)

Interesting. By reading these comments, I gather that it takes very little to offend the 'tolerant' Dutch. The people in this video were giving their opinions and impressions of a country that isn't their own, so naturally some things will seem different or downright odd to them, at least at first. I bet Dutch tourists have similar thoughts when visiting other countries. And so many here go on to put down other countries, all the while saying that it's wrong to criticize or judge the Netherlands. Hypocrite much? There are a lot of hostile people in the Netherlands..

Imagine we had a sign for every rule we've got in our overly regulated country though :') We'd be writing half a lawbook on every corner of the street and nobody will bother reading any of it. I think we could do with a few more signs here and there because as it is we've summarized the summary of the red line of the rules but yea there is a point where nobody will even bother reading it if you detail every rule about everything xD Look at how few people actually read ToS and Privacy Agreements, that'll be our entire country about the signs if we do this :') Take the OV-chipkaart for example. The back refers to the terms and conditions of Trans Link Systems B.V. which no doubt contains every detail about checking in, out, the validity of the product in different conditions and liability clauses. There's a link and a phone-number referred too where you can obtain said information. But hardly anyone reads it, just a few more will call the number for a specific inquiry. Heck, I doubt most people have even read the back of the card at all, hence people missed the rules and mess up sometimes.

why stairs are so steep in the netherlands in old buildings was because we had an economic boom back then but real estate was tight. so the plot of lands were not big meaning they had to build up. since the plots of land again were not that big it forced the builders of then to come up with a different solution hence why there are steep stairs the steps are about 15 centimeters while a normal step today has a step length of about 30 cm
@lexburen59324 жыл бұрын
i only hear what they don't like about Amsterdam, Amsterdam is not the Netherlands. There is so much more to explore then just Amsterdam. Go to the south east and you'll experience the more relaxed side of the Netherlands, with the more traditional cultures customs and way of life. In the suburbs like Amsterdam, den haag etc, people are less relaxed because they live under the pressure of the bigger city's.
